Habu on Habu Interview Logo
15 July 2000
Questions: Jouni Tolonen, Jonathan Tisdall
Translation: Akira Watanabe

Who are you?

My name is Yoshiharu Habu. I was born in Tokorozawa, Saitama (near Tokyo), September 27, 1970. I became a professional Shogi player at the age of 15, and I have 4 of the 7 biggest titles in Shogi.

Where and how do you live?

Now I live in Setagaya ward, in Tokyo. I'm out of Tokyo 120 days a year to play Shogi, and other 140 days for other engagements.

Can you name the three most important things in your life at the moment?

First is that I encountered Shogi. Second, that I have many people who taught me to play Shogi (my parents, my master [Mr. Futagami], and others who supported me). Third is my marriage and the birth of my daughters.

Besides games, what's your favourite pastime?

Swimming and travelling (not for the job).
