Hi All,

Well the season is a few weeks old now and everyone should have had a game or two under their belts?( where are you Dave Evans the Rugger is over!!) The way my season is going I'll be glad when it's over - not so for Lord Zed who is on a rather good run at the moment , 9 games undefeated if you haven't spoke to him in the last few days. I think he should crack 1700 + this season no problems - then his head will probably be as large as another part of his body !!( answers on a postcard to....) Seriously, if you haven't seen one of wins this season here is a sample of him putting a 1700+ through the treadmill.

Short n' sweet eh - on top of that it helped us win last years Gwent u-1800 Cup - although, we are already OUT of this years competition!

One of the other games that has got my attention this season was the recent DERBY match between our club sides. As I was deselected for the match it was a good opportunity to watch our players in action. One of the games that caught my eye was an intriguing  game on board 2 - Alan Thompson  vs.  Mark Cooke. I soon found myself writing the moves down and when I got home I immediately got to putting into my database to analyse at a later stage. Whilst doing this though I found myself commenting on the game as I thought of it in "real time" - the results of which I posted to WAT & MC the next day. Later I put Fritz to work on it but these were my observations at the time !!....

1.Nf3 After 1 d4 this is known as The WAT attack! 1...Nc6 Never one to follow fashion our Mark! 2.d4 If Alan dosen't play this 1st move it MUST follow on the 2nd! 2...d5 3.e3 The beginnings of a Torre attack - Steve Williams would be proud! 3...Bg4 This is looking more like a mutant scandinavian to me now!?? 4.c4 I haven't let the PC analyse this yet so God knows what opening it will code it as ? my guess b4 blacks next move is a Queens gambit... 4...e5 Budapest stylee !! 5.h3 Bxf3 [5...Bxf3 best] 6.Qxf3 Bb4+ 7.Bd2 e4 8.Qd1 [Qg3 looked better methinks htting the g pawn?] 8...Nf6 9.Nc3 0-0 10.a3 Be7 11.cxd5+- Nxd5 12.Nxe4 a pawn is a pawn ! 12...Re8 13.Nc3 Bd3 looked a bet try ? 13...Bf6 14.Be2 Bxd4‚ 15.exd4 here I thoug ht Nxd4 might have been better with the idea of Qxd4 Be3 Qxg2 Rf1 etc ? 15...Nxd4 16.Be3 Nxe3 17.fxe3 Rxe3 18.0-0 Nxe2+ 19.Nxe2 Qxd1 20.Raxd1 Rxe2 The dust settles & MC is 2 pawns to the good -but Wat has slim threats of a back ranker if Thomas asks for the toilet ?!! 21.Rd7 f6 22.b4 b6 23.Rxc7 a5 24.bxa5 Rxa5 25.Rd1 h6 26.Rdd7 Rg5 This I must admit I did not see - good move Mark !! 27.g4 h5 ? Re3 must be better hitting the a n' h pawns... 28.Kf1 Ra2 29.Ra7 hxg4 30.h4 Rf5+ 31.Ke1 Here the general consensus from the observers was that Al had gone the wrong way ? Kg1 looked safer? 31...Re5+ 32.Kd1 f5 33.Rxg7+= Kf8 34.Rgd7 [Crafty 16.6: 34.Rgf7+ Kg8 35.Rg7+ Kf8 0.00/12; Crafty 16.6: 34.Raf7+ Ke8 35.Rb7 Rd5+ 0.00/12; Crafty 16.6: 34.Rh7 Rd5+ 35.Kc1 Kg8 36.Rag7+ Kf8 37.Rf7+ Kg8 38.Rhg7+ Kh8 39.Rh7+ Kg8 0.00/12] 34...g3 This is where Zane says that Rh7 wins for white - Crafty gives it as half a pawn better for white but still not conclusive? It gives WAT's move the same + score of 0.31 35.Rf7+ Ke8 NOW white is winning if Rh7 is played !! 36.Rg7?
