I’ve recently spent some time looking at various ways of playing free live Internet chess. Here are a few sites and my comments about them.

Play here using Chessmaster. A freeware version is available but if you own Chessmaster 5500 or 6000 you can play rated games. Very user friendly once you get to the Chessmaster lounge. Usually around 30 players online at a time.
Here, you sit at a table to play. Often 100s of players online at one time. Software isn’t as nice as Mplayer.com. Free rated games.
Again 100s of players online and free rated games. Freeware version of their software is needed to play.
Probably the most popular online chess place. Telnet based but you can download a graphical interface. I use Chess Client. Free rated games.
Kasparov's web site. Apart from playing online there is much more here including lessons from top GMs, news etc.

Many GMs and IMs play at this site.

I usually play at FICS with the handle ZZChess.

Please let me know the handles of any of you who use FICS and I`ll add you to my notify list.
