Nintendo Announces Play Control System For Next Hardware - 11.16.2005 | 19:41 - James Collins

Nintendo have announced it will include a play control system in its next home video game system, code-named 'Revolution', coming in 2006. By using a password-controlled setting, adults will be able to decide what flexibility they'll allow younger players to have in playing games rated 3+, 7+, 12+, 16+ or 18+. The system also ensures dedicated adult gamers can opt to play without limitations. The system will work in the same way as some DVD players restrict viewing of certain DVD films.

Nintendo's games in Europe are rated using the Pan European Games Information (PEGI) age rating system for interactive games, which groups games into five different age bands, 3+, 7+, 12+, 16+ or 18+.

The Sound of Music - 40th Anniversary Edition - DVD Review - 11.15.2005 | 09:29 - Andrew St.Denis

The greatest film musical ever is 40 years old, 20th Century Fox have now re-released The Sound Of Music in two formats. There is a two disc special edition and a ‘sing-a-long’ version, the one we got was the former. Re-mastered, re-recorded and generally all spruced up for the modern audience who either want to relive or see this masterpiece for the first time.

There must only be a few people who haven’t either seen or heard of The Sound of Music, this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical comes from the original stage musical with book credits by Howard Lindsay and Russel, which in turn comes from the original German film (1956). Everything however started with the original book by Maria Augusta Trapp, the story of the Trapp family singers (1949). The last musical ever scored by this famous duo (including the very last lyrics written before Oscar Hammerstein’s death). The Sound of Music is the quintessential family movie almost tailor-made for Sunday afternoons.

official site] [Click to visit the

official site]
The story-line (for those that don’t know) follows Maria (Julie Andrews) who, as a novice nun in Salzburg, Austria is sent to be a governess to the seven children of widowed, retired naval officer, Captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). The children, Liesl, (Charmian Carr), Friedrich (Nicholas Hammond), Louisa (Heather Menzies), Kurt (Duane Chase), Brigitta (Angela Cartwright), Marta (Debbie Turner) and Gretl (Kym Karath), initially are hostile and rather mischievous, but, with the help of some very famous songs, eventually come to like her. Maria also finds herself falling in love with the Captain. Whilst all this takes place the Nazi’s take control of the country in the Anschluss, the Germans also want Captain von Trapp to return to action.

The songs in The Sound of Music are perhaps some of the most famous ever seen on film, from the opening credits and Maria spinning her way into ‘The hills are alive with The Sound of Music’, through ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘My Favourite Things’ to the closing ‘Climb Every Mountain’. Another song, Edelweiss is so famous that Ronald Reagan had it played when an Austrian delegation visited the White House, even though it was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein and not the national anthem as thought.
[Click to visit the

official site] [Click to visit the

official site]
The extras on the two disc special are for the most part very good, Julie Andrews reminisces in ‘My Favourite Things’ and joins Christopher Plummer for a similar session. There is a trip around the various locations used around Salzburg along with perhaps the best, ‘From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion’ where it is easy to see how well, even after all these years how well everyone gets on. There is also a biography of the real von Trapp family, which shows how much different the film is from the reality of the events in Austria. The one part of the extras that disappoints is the section about the restoration of the original film stock. The detailed explanation goes into far too much detail for the average viewer, and it will not be until comparison shots of various scenes show on the screen that any understanding will be reached. There is also a screen test for a young Mia Farrow’s audition for the part of Liesl.

With the film and musical score being restored and re-recorded the quality is quite excellent, 5.1 or 4.0 surround sound capability enhances the experience of these wonderful Rodgers & Hammerstein songs. Also in this 40th anniversary edition you get introductions by Julie Andrews, talking about the film on both of the discs.

official site] [Click to visit the

So is this 40th anniversary edition worth a purchase? It has to be said yes, even if you have already got a copy of this classic film, the restoration of the original film brings all scenes back to their best and with the inclusion of the new extras, commentaries etc allow you to gain added information about how this extraordinary film came about.

Scores -
Movie: 7.7
Extras: 8.3
Total: 8.1

Everyone should see this movies at least once, and how better to see it then in front of a warm fire over Christmas with the whole family… There’s not likely to be anything better to watch on TV, that’s for sure!

Celebration as Mario hits 20th Birthday - 11.14.2005 | 10:53 - James Collins

Mamma Mia! Prepare to don your dungarees in recognition of the 20th birthday of the world's original videogame royalty! Developed by legendary videogame designer Shigeru Miyamoto, a cap-wearing Brookland plumber might not be the most likely of gaming heroes, but in the last 20 years Mario, of Super Mario Bros fame, has captured the hearts and minds of millions.

In the early 1980s a small Japanese games card manufacturer called Nintendo revolutionised the entertainment industry by making a bold move into the fledgling computer games industry, a move that would later come to define the company's future. One of the company's first titles was the Donkey Kong arcade game, starring a small moustached Italian American called Jump-Man. In 1985 this character featured in his first ever dedicated game and re-launched with the new iconic name - MARIO.

Twenty years after this first appearance, Mario has become one of the best-known video games characters in the world. The Mario franchise has to date sold 190 million games around the world, across eight Nintendo consoles and has launched a hugely successful range of spin-offs including a motion picture, a cartoon series and numerous toy ranges loved by generations.

In celebration of the 20th birthday of the world's most famous plumber, Nintendo has declared November 'Mario Month'. To celebrate, Nintendo will be launching a staggering six Mario titles. Furthermore Mario Smash Football kicks off with an exciting bundle containing an exclusive pearl white Nintendo GameCube console!

As well as Mario Smash Football, the Nintendo GameCube will take on a distinctly active feel with the launch of Dancing Stage: Mario Mix and Mario Baseball during Mario Month. The Game Boy Advance will see the launch of Mario Power Tennis and classic puzzle fest Dr Mario and Puzzle League. Finally the Nintendo DS will be supported by the launch of one of the most anticipated games of the year, Mario Kart DS.
Volvo Cars Gets Inside Xbox - 11.14.2005 | 10:44 - James Collins

For the first time in the video game industry, a car company has built a driving game around its entire brand with the release today of "Volvo Drive for Life," a game published by Microsoft for the Xbox game system.

Prior to the launch of "Volvo Drive for Life" on Xbox, companies -- including Volvo -- had participated in video games by inserting their products into an existing game platform. The new Volvo video game was designed to immerse the user in Volvo's most important core value, safety while participating in an exciting gaming experience.

Everything within the game, from the cars to the surroundings, is modeled from scratch to create test tracks and driving environments that illustrate the strengths of the active safety features of each vehicle represented in the game. Players will experience firsthand the benefits of Volvo's world-class safety features such as Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Four-C Chassis, and Roll Stability Control (RSC), while testing their skills in the challenging game environment.

"The Volvo Drive for Life game is a significant yet fun shift in how we communicate our message of safety and present our cars to current and potential customers," said John Neu, Volvo Cars of North America's manager of CRM & eBusiness. "It details our safety in a way no brochure could ever describe or any commercial could ever visualize. We look forward to seeing the public's response to this work."

"Volvo Drive for Life" features the Volvo S40 and S60 R sedans and the Volvo XC90 V8 sport utility vehicle, enabling participants to build the vehicle to their own specifications. Players first attempt to navigate a course at the Volvo proving grounds in Gothenburg, Sweden, without Volvo's active safety features engaged -- only to find it nearly impossible.

Volvo's active safety features are then engaged, and players attempt the course again to experience the effect of the safety system -- defying a variety of obstacles and challenges. After successfully passing the course at the proving grounds, players then move on to drive the Volvo S40 along the Pacific Coast Highway, race the Volvo S60 R at the Italian Grand Prix or take the Volvo XC90 V8 on the treacherous road to the Ice Hotel in Sweden.

Beyond the actual game play, gamers can view videos that take them inside Volvo's state-of-the-art Safety Center in Sweden. Users can also watch actual crash test footage from the Volvo Safety Center and other safety-related video clips on each model.

"Volvo Drive for Life" continues a series of historic firsts for Volvo in leveraging the digital realm for marketing purposes. In recent years, Volvo was the first auto manufacturer to: have its own Web site; place banner ads; sponsor blog sites; conduct pod casts; and, launch a vehicle online.

The game was developed jointly by Volvo Cars of North America, Euro RSCG 4D, Kirt Gunn & Associates, Inc., and Climax Action. It is available at Volvo retailers nationwide and will be featured in various marketing initiatives, including auto shows and the Burton Demo Tour throughout 2005. Visit www.volvocars.us for details on the nearest Volvo retailer.

Championship Manager 2006 announced by Eidos - 11.09.2005 | 13:33 - James Collins

Eidos Interactive have announced details of their forthcoming management game, Championship Manager 2006. Developed by London-based Beautiful Game Studios, Championship Manager 2006 will feature a brand new 3d engine and other improvements which they hope will take the series forward.

PRESS RELEASE

Eidos Interactive, one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, today announces that Championship Manager 2006 will be released in the UK in Spring 2006 on PC.

Developed by London-based Beautiful Game Studios (BGS), the all-new 2006 version offers a wide range of innovative new features and is the most realistic version to date, offering the player a true taste of football management.

Championship Manager 2006 boasts a brand new GameplanTM 3D match engine, where players can watch their match unfold in the same way they watch the match on TV – but with the ability to adjust tactics, player positions or formations – or simply use the Highlight Filter to select the moments they want to watch.

Interact with your squad as you speak with your players for the first time: make promises to individual players to improve their mood or form. But as in real life, if promises are broken, trust is lost and there are consequences – with the new player status screen, monitor the mood and form of every player.

Championship Manager 2006 now offers the ability to scout in depth with its new 'Simulate world' option. For the first time, users will be able to view authentic player's performance stats outside the nation managed, all with no noticeable speed reduction! Scouting will never be the same again.

Implemented in Championship Manager 2006 are accurate fitness regimes devised by Mervyn Day, first team coach at Charlton Athletic. Study your opposition's current form through parallel match processing. Watch their previous matches through the GameplanTM 3D engine, before you face them whilst the game progresses.

Or choose a wealthy Club Benefactor for an instant cash injection, but with more money comes more demands and a greater need for immediate success.

Championship Manager 2006 allows you to manage your club to glory, dealing with everything from tactics and training to transfers - everything you would expect a real-life football manager to do without owning a sheepskin coat.

American Pie: Band Camp DVD Review - 11.06.2005 | 18:29 - Andrew St.Denis

The American Pie movies have done well in the past, now comes the fourth instalment, American Pie: Band Camp. Will this be just as good? The fact Band Camp is a straight to video release, could be seen as the main factor for most peoples decision.

Although the movie is part of the American Pie franchise there are in fact only two people from the other movies involved. Chris Owen returns as Chuck Sherman and Eugene Levy as Mr. Levenstein (Jim’s dad from the earlier films). The rest of the cast are newcomers, Tad Hilgenbrinck plays Matt Stifler, the younger brother of Steve and does so very well, mannerisms and facial expressions are so close to Seann Willams Scott it’s amazing.
[Click to visit the official site] [Click to visit the official site]

The obligatory love interest is Arielle Kebbel who plays Elyse the band leader of East Great Falls entry into ‘Band Camp’, Stifler is the prank playing jock whose latest practical joke results in him having to attend band camp as the alternative to being expelled. The pranks continue there, until he falls in love. But will Stifler be able to curb his instincts? The rest of the cast are, for the most part new to movies, but there isn’t any really noticeable bad acting.

Band Camp is definitely in the ‘teen movie’ mould, rated 15 in the UK that is really where this movie is aimed, there are the usual scantily clad young women bouncing about, whilst not showing enough to make it an 18 certificate. There are some good performances by and large but this isn’t going to win any major awards.

Extras include outtakes, deleted scenes and a music video for Sir-mix-a-lot’s “Baby’s Got back” featuring some of the cast members. Along with these are a video diary with Tad Hilgenbrinck, plus a set tour with Angela Little (Sheree) and Rachel Veltri (Dani). Finally there is the ‘Secret Rover Cam Footage’ which features a rather cool robot which is seen in the movie and which shows some of the people in the movie in unusual circumstances.

With what is now the fourth in the American Pie series and the first to go straight to video, American Pie: Band Camp tries to stretch this franchise a little bit too far. Taking only two characters from the earlier movies and even then only giving one a meaningful place, then making it about the brother of the original Seann William Scott character just goes to show why this went straight to video. Fans of the American Pie movies will want to watch it, maybe they will even enjoy it (who knows). Apart from them though this is a teen movie aimed at the hormonal fifteen year old male market

Delivering lion-sized family fun, the Madagascar DVD will be priced at £19.99 RRP and VHS £14.99 RRP

Madagascar tells the story of four New York Central Park Zoo animals who find themselves shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. Stranded, the “native New Yorkers” – Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) must figure out how to survive in the wild and discover the true meaning of the phrase “It’s a jungle out there.”

The design of the four main characters began with the basic features of a lion, zebra, hippopotamus and giraffe. Influenced by classic cartoons from the 1930’s and 40’s as well as children’s picture books, the teams at DreamWorks Animation and PDI/DreamWorks then used state-of-the-art computer animation to achieve an old-fashioned cartoon look that pays homage to such animation legends such as Chuck Jones and Tex Avery. In keeping with Madagascar’s cartoon comedy style, the animators carried this look over to all of the film’s elements. As the designs dictated that this world be slightly askew -- not overly caricaturised -- the team began referring to it as the “whack factor.”

    MADAGASCAR DVD BONUS MATERIALS
Bursting with over 100 interactive games and creative activities, the Madagascar DVD is a fully-fledged entertainment centre providing audiences of all ages with a richly enhanced home viewing experience. Highlights include:
