Mr & Mrs. Smith DVD Review - 11.20.2005 | 20:06 - Andrew St.Denis

Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a hit early in 2005, not so much in regards to the film, but as to whether Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were getting together off screen. When you see this film you will see why the rumours started, playing a married couple, both of whom are government assassins, Jolie and Pitt look like a real couple, the little sideways looks and basic mannerisms point the way… However, they are actors, so if it’s real or not, only they and their publicists know for sure.

John and Jane first meet in Bogotá, Colombia, both on assignment; however with their cover about to be blown they see each other as a way out of the potential fix, they act as a couple. They then do fall for each other and get married, both still unaware of the others real persona. The film starts in a councillor’s office, with them going through marriage guidance and continues to flip between there and the action. This works very well, not so much breaking up the movie, but helping to give an insight into their twisted reality.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is either an action comedy with some romance thrown in or, possibly a romantic comedy with some action. It’s difficult to be sure although no matter which way you look at it the screenplay and chemistry of the stars both work wonders, of course you need both to make a hit film and Simon Kinberg’s writing along with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie work so well together.

The rest of the cast features some great actors; Vince Vaughn puts in some brilliant ‘off the wall’ monologues but apart from that the others are just, window dressing, really. Keith David (Chronicles of Riddick & Transporter 2) and William Fichtner (The Longest Yard, GTA Vice City & San Andreas) are just two actors that just really fill in parts.

Director Doug Liman is probably best known for directing ‘The Bourne Identity’ and producing ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and you can certainly see aspects of those films appearing in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. You can also see a few actors that he used in ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Supremacy’ getting parts in this film, working well in the more spy based parts of the film.

Special effects aren’t a huge part of this film, but in a few places they do appear, however the one real scene that falls down is also down to effects. There is a part where you see Brad Pitt in the back seat of a car, when the camera pans around to the back of the car, it is pretty clear that it’s computer generated, since it looks out of place and he seems larger then in the other shots… A shame, but that is the only huge mistake.

The extras aren’t huge, but with a Fox network featurette on the ‘making of’ plus three deleted scenes there is enough to learn about how this film came about. There are also two commentaries, one by Doug Liman, (director) and Simon Kinsberg, (screenwriter) and the second by Akiva Goldsman and Lucas Foster, both producers that go into more detail, and depending on who you listen too, about different aspects of putting this movie together.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a clever film, its not going to win any huge awards, but if you are looking for a fun film then you can’t miss this one. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie both work so well in this film it would be a shame, even if these rumours aren’t true, not to see them star in more movies together. It is difficult to say which genre this film fits into, but if you don’t take your entertainment too literal and serious you should enjoy, no matter what your preference is.
