Frost Wilmot Team Blitz

Held: Wed. 26th October 2005 at 11 Belgrave Road
Controller: Ian Hunnable

Barclays pip Athenaeum in close contest

Five teams initially entered for this season's Frost Wilmot and, for once, no-one dropped out at the last minute and all who had entered turned up and played! So a second outing for Sedgwick Pairings was called for (last used 2002-03) and provided the framework for a close and exciting contest.

Of the five teams, only ABI/Zurich was an "Insurance" team, the others, Athenaeum 1 and 2, Barclays and ABS/Americans, are all participants in the Combined Banks and Insurance Chess League.

The format of Sedgwick Pairings as basically to divide the entry into two groups, the first comprising boards 1 and 2 of each team, the other comprising boards 3 and 4 of each team, and play a jamboree-based pairing system within each. This produced four rounds of two games each or eight games for each player Games were played at 10 minutes per clock per game.

In the first round, RBS/Americans were one short and they utilised Mike Jones of Barclays (who had managed to have an extra man) as a substitute. At the end of round 1 the missing Barclays man - no less than their top board David Moskovic 204 - arrived and for the rest of the tournament, Barclays were allowed to adopt their originally intended board order with Mike Jones retiring to the rank of spectator.

With these permutations, the teams, in draw order, were:

A - Athenaeum 2

B - ABI/Zurich

C - Barclays

D - Athenaeum 1

E - RBS/Americans

Athenaeum 1 began with a bang, winning all four of their first round game 1 encounters. They were, however, reminded that it was a contest in game 2 were they could only muster a further 1½. Still, 5½ points was sufficient to establish a clear lead after round 1 with Athenaeum 2, ABI/Zurich and Barclays all 1½ points adrift on 4 points, RBS/Americans 2½.

Athenaeum edged further ahead in round 2, but Barclays managed to restrict this advance to a mere half point, while ABI/Zurich shaded third place on 7 ahead of Athenaeum2 and RBS/Americans who each had 6½.

The contest, however, really came to the boil in round 3. Athenaeum 1 seemed to be bang on course to retain the trophy when scoring 3-1 in game 1, but once again the second of each pair of games brought them up short, yielding but ½ a point.  Barclays, meanwhile, got into their stride, scoring 2-2 and 3-1 in this round to join Athenaeum in the lead, each on 14½. The rest of the field were also neck-and-neck (virtually) with ABI/Zurich and RBS/Americans on 10½ and Athenaeum 2 on 10.

So to the final round with all to play for. Barclays struck the first blow, winning the first games 3-1 against Athenaeum 1's 2-2. In the second pair of games, Barclays hung on with honours even at 2-2 for both teams, so Barclays ran out winners on 19½/32 ahead of Athenaeum 1 18½.  Athenaeum 2 pulled their socks up to overtake the two teams ahead of them and finish 3rd on 15 and ABI/Zurich and RBS/Americans finished joint tail-gunners on 13½ (after a re-count).

Barclays are congratulated on a fine come-back; commiserations to Athenaeum 1.  Barclays only had one bad game (round 1, game 1, when they scored only 1-3) After that, they scored 2-2 twice and better than that in the other five game groups. Athenaeum 1, on the other hand, twice had losing score groups 1½-2½ (r1 g2 and r3 g2) and were three times held to 2-2.
