Nurse Lightning Championship Held: 27th
September 2005, at 11 Belgrave Road
Report by Ian Hunnable Tony Paish, by his own admission, has not previously excelled at Lightning chess, but here on top form, he won the Nurse Cup for the first time. However, all is not as it seems: a trawl through the archives finds that in the 1992-93 event Paish and Hunnable both finished on 7½/8, the latter winning the play-off. Tony identified his new-found secret of success as a power-nap after lunch that day - something he has not been in the habit of doing. Hunnable, having led after the first cycle by 3/4 to Paish 2½ was overtaken in the second cycle, scoring 2/4 to Paish's 3/4. Only last round dramas decided the matter. In Barclay-Hunnable, the latter was twice in a winning position and twice snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Meanwhile, Paish against David Malcolm appeared at one point to be struggling, but rallied to win an ending of opposite coloured bishops, aided by the undoubted advantage of two united passed pawns. So, many congratulations to Tony Paish on a well-earned success. IH |
