Recommended Online Word Game Links

If you like word games then you might like to try these online word games.

1. Word Grid (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/adam.bozon/wordgrid.htm)

This is a free online single player word game. Letters appear in the top left corner of the grid and you have to place them onto the grid to try and make horizontal and vertical words. The minimum word length begins at 4 letters but this goes up after you reach 25, 50 and 75 words. There are bonuses for using harder letters and making longer words. The aim of the game is to score as many points you can and to make as many words as you can.

2. Word Pyramids (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/adam.bozon/wordpyramids.htm)

This is a free online single player word game. You begin with 2 letters at the top of the pyramid. On each word you have to add another letter and rearrange them to form a new word to try and fill up the word pyramid. There are 5 pyramids in each game and the aim is to score as many points as you can. There are 2 skill levels, the easy version goes up to 7 letter words and the harder version goes up to 10 letter words.

3. Scrabble (play.games.com)

You can play Scrabble here. Its fairly reliable, its rare that you get disconnected in the middle of a game unless the whole server goes down. There are usually over 500 people playing at any given moment so its not hard to find an opponent. There is a 7 minute time limit for each go so you don't have to just quit a game yourself when your opponent insists on just leaving the room when they are losing. You can play rated or unrated games although it doesn't keep a record of how many wins and loses you have had.

4. Cascade  (www.playsite.com)

Click on the picture above to see a screenshot.

Cascade is a very addictive word game that comes highly recommended. Each game lasts for 2 minutes and can have up to 20 players playing against each other. You can change the rules to have longer or shorter games or to make the word lengths needed different. You are given 7 letters to begin with and your aim is to make words from those letters. You begin with an empty cascade, from the 7 letters you have you need to try and firstly make a 2 letter word by clicking on the letters at the top. They will fall and be replaced by 2 new letters, now you need to try and make a 3 letter word from the 7 letters you now have, when you click on them, the letters will fall again and get replaced with some new ones, now you try and make a 4 letter word from the 7 letters you have, again you click on those and they fall and get replaced by 4 new letters, you now try and make a 5 letter word from the letters you now have. The letters are worth different values and if you manage to fill a whole cascade (get a 2, 3, 4 and 5 letter word) then you get a 5 point bonus. Once that cascade is over, you get a new empty cascade and you repeat this all again. You have to score as many points as you can in the 2 minute time limit. At the end of the game, the player who has got the best 2,3, 4 and 5 letter words will get a bonus depending on the score of that word, in the event of a tie then the player who got that word score first gets the points bonus. You do have a rate and there are daily and all time high scores pages so that you have something to aim at. There are a few minor flaws in the game but try not to let them bother you too much. It is still only a test version at the moment so hopefully these will be fixed eventually. If you trying to go quickly then this can sometimes make letters come drop down in the wrong order. With a short pause after each completed word then this shouldn't happen very often and also lag can be bad at times. If you play turn off the in-game sound otherwise it might crash. If you are interested in trying this then I have a website with the best words on and some useful word lists here.

5. Word Racer (games.yahoo.com)

Click on the picture above to see a screenshot.

Word Racer is like a computerised version of Boggle for those of you who have played that. For those who haven't you get a random selection of letters in a grid and you have to make as many words as you can by making words of at least 3 letters long from adjacent letters in the grid. Up to 8 players can play each game. The first player to find each word gets points for it depending on how long the word is. In each game there are 4 rounds which are 2 minutes each. The 1st round takes place on a 4x4 grid with no bonus letters, the 2nd round takes place on a larger octagon shaped grid. On this grid there are 2 blue letters, if you get a word which uses one of these blue letters then the word score is doubled, if your word uses both blue letters then you get the word score quadrupled. The 3rd round takes place on a grid which is shaped like two square grids joined in the middle. These grids contain two red letters, if you get a word containing one of these red letters then your word score is tripled, if you get a word containing both of these red letters then you get nine times the word score. The 4th round takes place on a 6x6 grid with the middle 4 letters removed. On this grid there are 2 blue letters and 2 red letters so there are good bonus chances here, a word containing a red and blue letter gets the word score multiplied by 6. You get a record kept containing a rate and how many times you have come in each position from 1st to 8th. This game can be played either by typing in your words on the keyboard or with the mouse by clicking on the letters and dragging to make your word. I have a backdoor to Word Racer which allows you to get into full rooms. Click here to load that page up.

6. Tangleword (www.playsite.com)

Click on the picture above to see a screenshot.

Tangleword is similar to Word Racer mentioned above. Its the same rules, make words from adjacent letters and the longer the word the more points you get. The scoring is different though and the words must be at least 4 letters long here. If you are the first player to find a word you get a bonus point for it. This can be played by either typing or with the mouse like Word Racer. There is only one round in each game and this lasts for 2 minutes. The good things about this are that 32 players can play together in one game, you can play in rooms where the minimum word length is 5 or 6 if you prefer, you can change the time limit from the standard 2 minutes to anything from 30 seconds up to 5 minutes and the board size from anything from the standard 5x5 grid up to a 10x10 grid. You have a rate but no record of how many wins you have had or anything like that. There is a daily and all time high score table. Many people prefer this to Word Racer but I personally prefer Word Racer and would recommend that more although this is still good.

7. Literati (games.yahoo.com)

Click on the picture above to see a screenshot.

Literati is very similar to Scrabble. 2 to 5 players play in each game. The rules and board size are the same as Scrabble but there are a few small differences. These are that the board has different bonus squares, the letters have different values and there are different amounts of each of them compared to Scrabble and they have different
values. You have a rate and a win/loss record saved. You can have timed games if you prefer.

8. Spelldown (games.yahoo.com)

Click on the picture above to see a screenshot.

Spelldown is a single player word game which is played against the clock and is a little bit similar to Cascade mentioned above. You start with 5 minutes and have to find either one or two words from the letters given in each selection. Once you have found the required word(s) from the selection you get a new set of letters and have to do this again. If you get a high scoring word then you get a time bonus. There are also bonuses that can be got if you get a word that hasn't been got by anybody else for a while. If you can't find a word from the letters given then you can discard a letter for a 10 second penalty, this can be annoying as it does have a tendancy to give you back the letter you just discarded again and again. You get your average score saved and there are high score tables kept for each day and month.

9. Boggle  (play.games.com)

This is the proper version of Boggle. You can have up to 6 players in each game and you have a rate kept. You can either type or use the mouse when making words.
