So
this weekend is “the big
game”…you know, I can never
remember the convoluted rules
about when you can or cannot say
its actual name. I will give my
fearless, stone-cold-lock,
*insert sports prediction cliché
here* pick for Sunday though:
Colts 30, Bears 20.
Speaking of Indianapolis and its
Colts, Dave Dugan and his
“Hangover Café” are on hiatus
from WRZX for the time
being. However, Lenny Diana,
Indy’s second-favorite resident
(after Peyton Manning of
course), will be taking the
reigns for the time being, so
please direct all your CDs to
him.
Also we welcome aboard WMWX
“Class-X Radio”/Miamitown, OH,
located just outside of
Cincinnati. Fletch McGruff
hosts “Future Class-X” every
Sunday night from
8p.m.-midnight.
Coinciding with the announcement
of their first North American
tour, The Good, The Bad & The
Queen take over the #1 album
position this week, with
“Herculean” at #4t. The Shins
are also having quite a week,
with Wincing The Night Away
selling just under 118,000
copies last week to debut at #2,
the biggest sales week in Sub
Pop history. Congratulations
to all involved! They’re also #2
on our albums chart, with
“Phantom Limb” and “Australia”
both charting as well. The
Arcade Fire claims the #3
album but the #1 single with
“Black Mirror.” Last week’s Best
Bet VietNam make a big
time debut, with their
self-titled record at #4 and
“Welcome To My Room” at #2. The
album I am listening to as I
write this very paragraph,
New Magnetic Wonder from
The Apples In Stereo, is at
#5, with “Energy” at #13t.
Bloc Party land at #6 on the
album chart and #8t on the
singles chart. Bayside
climb to #7t with Walking
Wounded, their first album
since the death of drummer John "Beatz" Holohan in
2005. “Duality” is at #7 on the
singles chart. Clap Your Hands
Say Yeah makes their
much-heralded return with
Some Loud Thunder debuting
at #9t and the creepy “Satan
Said Dance” at #8t. Also on both
charts this time around are
Black Tie Dynasty, Cold War
Kids, this week’s Best Bet
Youth
Group, Teddybears and
The
Rapture.
Stars Of Track And Field
hold the #3 single with “Movies
Of Antarctica,” while the
Kaiser Chiefs sit at #4t
with the very catchy “Ruby.”

One of the more likable
albums to land on my desk in recent weeks comes from
Sondre Lerche (pronounced san-DRE lar-KAY).
The Norwegian artist has had a varied career thus
far. Last year he threw music fans for a loop,
following up the crafty Two-Way Monologue
with a swingin’ Jazz album. However, on Phantom
Punch, he returns to Rock and further refines
his guitar-pop craft. The entire album is full of
tight, hooky, melodic tracks such as “Say It All,”
the title track and “She’s Fantastic.” The upbeat
songs are balanced with mellower moments like
“Tragic Mirror” and “After All.” Lerche says that
Phantom Punch was inspired by Elvis Costello
and the way he interacted on-stage with his backing
band. Lerche toured with the King in the past and
has received favorable comparisons to his hero in
the past. “These songs are cut to the bone, not a
second longer than they have to be,” Lerche says.
“And I didn’t want to be subtle this time around, I
wanted every song to jump out of the speakers –
punchy, concise Pop songs, played with restless
spirit.” Mission accomplished. Lerche only has a few
live dates announced overseas for 2007, but will be
coming to the U.S. at some point in support of
Phantom Punch. For more, visit

Our Best Bet this week comes
from Down Under. Youth Group have become stars in
their native Australia, breaking through with their cover of
Alphaville’s “Forever Young.” The song appears on
their new studio record, Casino Twilight Dogs, which
is just now seeing release Stateside. The band first
received recognition over here with their second album,
Skeleton Key and the single “Shadowland,” but they were
still sort of known as ‘that band the bassist from The
Vines is in.’ And yes, ex-Vines member Patrick
Matthews is in the four-piece band, along with guitarist
Cameron Emerson-Elliott and founding members Toby
Martin and Danny Allen. The band opened for
Death Cab For Cutie in October 2005, who became fans.
Chris Walla of Death Cab helped get “Shadowland” onto
The OC, then the Fox show tapped Youth Group to
cover “Forever Young,” and the rest is history. The song was
a #1 Platinum smash in Australia last April, setting up the
release of Casino Twilight Dogs in July of 2006. The
moody and atmospheric album includes the single “Sorry,”
which has been a success on the SubModern charts over the
past few weeks. Check out Youth Group at
