Bessel Kok to take over World championship Cycles

Bessel Kok has signed a memorandum of understanding with FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov form a company to take over the world championship cycle after competitions which have already been contracted by Fide have concluded. I believe that will be after Mexico City although its unclear to me whether the new FIDE suggestions for a World Cup every other year are something he is committed to or whether he has a blank sheet as to structure. Ilyumzhinov is on the board of directors along with Bessel and Alexey Orlov.

Kramnik to play in Mexico City?

Yury Vasiliev interviewed Kirsan Ilyumzhinov on 13th December 2006. The main news is that World Champion Vladimir Kramnik has agreed to take part in the World Championship tournament in Mexico City (http://www.chessmexico.com/) in September, 2007 in the same format as San Luis (8 player double round robin). Half the participants are already known:Vladimir Kramnik, Vishwanathan Anand, Peter Svidler and Alexander Morozevich. The remaining four players will be established in matches in May 2007 in Elista. In answer to the question as to whether Topalov had challenged Kramnik to a match under FIDE rules he said no such challenge had been received and the next window would only occur only after a period of 6 months after the Mexico city tournament.

Original Vasiliev interview in Russian http://www.chesspro.ru/.

According to a report by Mig on Chess Ninja "There were extensive negotiations about this going on behind the scenes, not all of them friendly. There will now likely be a new contract signed, perhaps at a public press conference." Mig has now updated this as saying that he understands the negotiations are still ongoing

However when the full article appeared in Chess Express http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3556 it seems that Kramnik hasn't really committed himself to playing in Mexico City yet in spite of it surely being the whole points of the reunification to play in an event already in place.

All that remains to be seen is a confirmation from Kramnik himself.

I received today a message from Silvio Danailov proposing April 12-30th 2007 for a world title match between Topalov and Kramnik. The relevant FIDE regulations suggest say the match would have to finish before March 12th 2007 because it should finish 6 months before Mexico City. The say they're willing to start earlier if they have to follow the regulations to the letter. The regulations say a) that Kramnik is obliged to accept a valid financed challenge, b) it doesn't set an minimum period between issuing the challenge and it taking place (so theoretically a 2700 player who had money and venue set up could organise one next week unless I missed something). But it does say that FIDE have five months to set the match up (which is way outside that date) which will probably be the get out clause. There is of course no chance Kramnik will accept the challenge]

If the chances of a match were zero, they're now less than zero. Topalov has at least stopped messing about with innuendo and has directly accused Kramnik and the Russian Government of fixing the match in Elista. Translation of the interview in Spanish daily ABC 14/12/2006 - Original article in Spanish. I find it sad that Topalov appears to be so paranoid but this could also very easily go to court because I really don't think you can go round making such allegations with zero proof.

Malcolm Pein's Chess Column 18th December 2006

A Russian article from Istvestia shows that Topalov has already been reported to the ethics commision. According to the article a FIDE advisor Berik Balgabaev (translation?) suggests that Topalov may not have been responsible for the article but instead his manager: http://www.izvestia.ru/sport/article3099681/ (I only have access to a poor electronic translation into English). http://www.veselintopalov.net/ has some links to a Carsten Hensel interview in english (directly) and denies the detailed comments in the ABC interview.

World Championship Match. Kramnik beats Topalov after Rapid playoff

Completed Playoff Games in PGN - World Championship Match Elista Playoff Games 2006 - Viewer

Vladimir Kramnik is the World Chess Champion, he took the title after a tense rapid playoffs. The final score was Kramnik 2½ - Topalov 1½. Topalov was probably on the way to a loss anyway when blundered horrifically to instantly end the final game.

The BBC report: "As Topalov resigned in the final game, Kramnik stood up and celebrated his victory by clutching his hands above his head, as his team erupted in joyful cheers. "We are planning to get drunk with my friends today," he said. "

Kommersant.com: “I’m really happy that the Crown remains in Russia,” Kramnik said a few minutes after the victory. “I can compare this achievement only to a win over Garry Kasparov. Taking into account the environment that my rivals have created, the victory was a matter of principle for me.”

Official site interview: "I am very glad that the crown stays in Russia. Personally for me this achievement is comparable to the victory against Kasparov. There aren’t many three-time world champions in the history, and I hope I will not stop there… Considering the atmosphere around the match and behavior of the opposing team, winning the match was a matter of principle." - "– I feel deeply tired. But of course, Elista will become a memorable place for me – such events do not occur often. It was a very hard test – even harder than I expected – but the winner’s joy outweighs everything negative."

FOCUS report:: Topalov: “I’m glad that everything ended. I’m sure that whole Bulgaria supported me. What happened in Elista could have happened everywhere but we were ready. I shouldn’t say I lacked experience from international matches. The rules are the same everywhere. It’s strange that Kramnik’s violation remained unseen but my manager Silvio Danailov will give you more details on the case”, were Topalov’s first words when he landed.

[14...0-0 has been seen before.] 15.Bb5+ Kf8 16.Qxd8+! Kramnik is the best player in the world without queens on. He gets a position he is totally comfortable with. 16...Rxd8 17.Ba3 Rc8 18.Nd4 Be7 19.Rfd1! a6!? The start of a very ambitious plan that Kramnik defuses brilliantly. [19...Ne4! and the game would probably have ended in a draw.] 20.Bf1 Na4?! [20...Ne4 again was probably better.] 21.Rab1! Either Topalov missed this, or more likely missed its power. He has to start to be careful. 21...Be4 22.Rb3! Bxa3 23.Rxa3 Nc5 24.Nb3! Clarifys the advantage 24...Ke7 25.Rd4! NH Chess Tournament

Magnus Carlsen qualifies for next year's Amber tournament by topping the Rising Stars standings. Photo © Fred Lucas http://www.momentoo.nl

The NH Chess Tournament took place August 19th-29th at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. It was organized by the hotel chain NH Hotels in close cooperation with the Association Max Euwe from Monaco. The Scheveningen team tournament was a battle between a team of 'Experience' and a team of 'Rising Stars'. The 'old hands' were Andersson, Beliavsky, Jussupov, Ljubojevic and Nunn, while the 'Youngsters' were Carlsen, Karjakin, Stellwagen, Smeets and Wang Hao. As it turned out all the Rising Stars performed above their rating apart from Karjakin who lost a few points and they won the battle 28-22. Alexander Beliavsky is still an active competetor on the world scene and he scored excellently. Most of the rest don't compete that much these days and John Nunn (See interview at: http://www.doggers-schaak.nl/) in fact went as far as to announce his retirement a few years ago and in the end the 6 point gap was to be expected (and indeed spot on predicted by Mystic Mig). Magnus Carlsen will be invited to next year's Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Monaco after finishing as the Rising Star's top scorer.

FIDE Elo List July 2006

Just one rating list after taking top spot in the world after Kasparov's retirement meant that his rating became inactive Veselin Topalov has now exceeded Kasparov's final rating of 2812. He added 9 points after winning the MTel Masters in Sofia. Viswanathan Anand lost a few rating points at that event and a lot at the Olympiad where he managed only 50%. The rise of Levon Aronian the youngest player in the top 10 and the only player born in the 1980s continues as he gained 21 points in the period with his performances inthe Russian Team Championships and the Olympiad. Vladimir Kramnik's return at the Olympiad gained him 14 points and projects him back to number four in the world. Michael Adams returns to the top 10 gaining 12 points. Poor recent form has lost Ruslan Ponomariov 17 points and he drops from 6 to 13. Shakhriyaz Mamedyarov gained 23 points to rise to 12 in the world. David Navarra rises even further from 50 to 14 in the world after gaining a massive 61 points. Gata Kamsky's Olympiad and MTel performances means that he gains 26 points. Sergey Karjakin rises from 45 to 27 in the world, and his rival Magnus Carlsen from 63 to 34, both were born in 1990, after them the youngest players in the top 100 were born in 1987. Gabriel Sargissian is the top re-entry into the list rising from 2612 to 2667. Another surprise was FM Vladimir Afromeev's entry into the list with a rating of 2620, initially his April rating was given as 2558 but this must have been corrected at some point to 2612, he gained a further 8 points from a tournament in Tula to become the only non-GM in the list, especially surprising as he was born in 1954. 2619 is the mark to get into the top 100. It is surely well beyond the time to change the mark at which a GM norm is set (2600) which is a performance which clearly wouldn't get you anywhere near the top 100 (when it was originally set it was a performance of Candidates class which is now probably over 2700).

Aleksander Wojtkiewicz 1963-2006

Aleksander Wojtkiewicz was born 15th January 1963 in Riga, Latvia died around 6pm Friday 14th July 2006 in the USA.

There is shock news from the US (http://beta.uschess.org/frontend/news_7_66.php) that one of the world most active GMs Aleksander Wojtkiewicz has died from a perforated intestine, and massive bleeding. the age of 43. Born in Latvia in 1963 his early games he appeared under the name Vojtkevic. According to an article in the Urbanite Baltamore Magazine (http://www.urbanitebaltimore.com/juneMagazine/encounter.htm) "He became a chess master at 15, but his rise to grandmaster was delayed by a year spent in a Russian gulag. In the late ’80s, as a member of a human rights organization in Latvia, he refused to join the Soviet Army." He moved to Poland around 1988 (he doesn't seem to have played between 1982 and 1988 probably coinciding with his political problems with the Soviet authorities) and later spent increasing amounts of time in the US possibly after running foul of the Polish Chess Federation (http://www.chessclub.org/FischerRandom.html) and in 2002 he switched nationalities in the rating list. A GM since 1991 he was most recently rated 2562 in July. In spite of obvious ill health he had just tied for first in the World Open.

FIDE Election Kirsan Ilyumzhinov re-elected

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is re-elected. Photo © Frits Agterdenbos http://www.chessvista.com/

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was re-elected FIDE President. He scored 96 votes as against 54 - for Bessel Kok. Two abstained, one spoilt ballot. The question posed by this election is, will it ever be possible to unseat him? The power of patronage of the sitting FIDE council seems to mean that making progress is hard. That said this is the first election in a long time that went to a vote. If someone can build on the opposition this time then 20 odd votes are required to change side to unseat him. Perhaps something that may be possible. On the other hand at only 44 years of age its possible we may have another 30 years of his rule. Originally he was only supposed to rule for two terms in Kalmykia, it now seems there is no end in sight there either. My overwhelming feeling is that FIDE has been bought and paid for by a maverick who has no place being in charge of anything.

Karpov vs Spassky Rapid Match

Boris Spassky defeated Anatoly Karpov in the two game "Match des Légendes" on May 26th 2006 in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica. The players haven't played much in recent years, although they did draw their two games at the Unzicker 80 event in Mainz in 2005 (prior to that their last meeting seems to have been 1988 in the GMA World Cup). The time rate was 15 mins + 3 secs in front of 300 children.

Much like Karpov's win against Kasparov in New York in 2002 this is I believe Spassky's first match win against Karpov. Very much after the Lord Mayor's show but still a match win.

Indeed Spassky seems to have only won two games previously against Karpov, the first game of their 1974 Candidates semi-final and the second game of their 1982 TV match in Hamburg. Karpov won both matches in the end.

Wolfgang Unzicker 1925-2006

Wolfgang Unzicker 26th June 1925 - 20th April 2006. The strongest West German Grandmaster before Robert Huebner has died of a heart attack on holiday in Portugal at the age of 80. Unzicker was an amateur player throughout his career being a judge of an administrative court. He became a Grandmaster in 1954. He won the German Championship 7 times and played in 12 Olympiads, on top board in 10 of them.

His best results were probably joint 1st with Spassky in the Chigorin Memorial Sochi 1965 and 4th= in the famous 2nd Piatigorsky-Cup behind Spassky, Fischer and Larsen. He never made any serious impact in the world championship only playing two Interzonals finishing 9th in 1952 and 16th in 1956. His top board status in the Olympiad meant he played all the greats of the time and in 1950, he shared the prize for best top-board score (+9 =4 -1) with Miguel Najdorf for his performance on first board for the West German team at the Dubrovnik Chess Olympiad. A quick flick through his games reveals he had at least one victory over Tartakower, Bogoljubov, Gligoric, Keres, Reshevsky, Fischer, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Larsen, Donner, Timman, Ljubojevic, Korchnoi and Tal. He had a solid classical style and had draws against most of the world's best players of his era in addition to the list above such as Petrosian, Euwe, Karpov and Short.

Although he seems to have stopped playing major events in 2002 he played for his team club "Tarrasch Munich" almost to the end and the Mainz Chess Classic organised an 80th birthday rapid event where he competed with Karpov, Korchnoi and Spassky in August of 2005 (http://www.chesstigers.de/ccm5_index.php?lang=1&kat=1).

FIDE Rating List April 2006

Garry Kasparov finally drops out as world number one through inactivity. When I asked Anand and Topalov about the race to be number one Anand virtually conceded Topalov would be top because Anand wasn't playing any more rated events. Topalov said he could blow it at Morelia and Linares, and he nearly did. A dreadful performance in Morelia was made up for by a tremendous comeback in Linares and he edges out Anand by a point. Both are within striking distance of Kasparov 2812 mark too. Levon Aronian rises to number three in the world from five continuing his rise as a new star of the game. Peter Svidler effectively drops a place holding number four but losing 22 points. Leko rises a place, and Ponomariov and Morozevich both gain. Vassily Ivanchuk rises one place to 7 (effectively holding) after his rating was corrected a few days after the list was released. Vladimir Kramnik drops again after his poor performance in the Russian Championship. Gelfand makes up the remaining top 10 place.

Danish Championship

The Danish Chess Championships took place in Aalborg, Denmark 8th-17th April 2006. The Championships introduced a whole new tournament system, Gladiator Chess, where the players will be playing a game at normal time settings (40 moves in 100 minutes + 30 minutes, and adding 30 seconds per move).   In case of a draw, they continued to play, colours reversed, a game of rapid chess with the time settings 25 minutes + 10 seconds per move. In case of yet a draw, players will continue to play, colours changing at every game, blitz chess, 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move until a game is decided. Thus, only 1’s and 0’s counted.

Sune Berg Hansen took first (he had the most victories in the standard time rate games) from Nicolai Vesterbaek Pedersen in 2nd, Karsten Rasmussen in 3rd and Steffen Pedersen in fourth. The top two were unaffected by the format.

La Roche-sur-Yon 2006

The Trophee Universitaire took place in La Roche sur Yon 15th-24th March 2006. The category XII event saw Krishnan Sasikiran finish on 6/9 half a point clear of Christian Bauer who lost an interesting theoretical endgame to Andrei Istratescu (each side had an h-pawn and Istratescu had an extra bishop but of the wrong colour for the queening square, he managed to keep Bauer from reaching the corner to stop the pawn and pick up his opponents h-pawn). It turns out that 78...Kb4? was the blunder and that table bases say that 78...Kd4 still held.

Betsson. Final Round up. Linares was an amazing event this year. One punter was set to win Euros 15,000 if Topalov could have pulled off a last round sensation and snatched victory in Linares! The odds moved so much on Topalov that at one point he was quoted at 100/1, four rounds later he was just 2/1. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. However one lucky punter had Euros 500 on Aronian at odds of 10 netting him a tidy profit of Euros 5,000, not a bad little investment!

Yasser Seirawan Letter

The campaign to elect Bessel Kok and his deputy Ali Nihat Yazicias FIDE President at the Turin FIDE Congress alongside the Olympiad (20th May - 4th June 2006) is in full swing. Letters of support from Federations and individuals have been coming into their website: http://www.rightmove06.org/. In particular there was a recent letter by Yasser Seirawan in Chess Today. Yasser Seirawan on FIDE from Chess Today 3rd February 2006.

From my point of view this is the best candidate for FIDE President for many years. But voting in FIDE elections does not proceed in the real world. I've seen Federation support for opposition to sitting FIDE Presidents Campomanes and then Iljumzhinov melt away in the night and these Federations end up supporting these candidates. At the very least we deserve to see the level of support for these candidates reflected in a final vote not some "we are one family" coronation and unanimous election of the next president.

Bessel Kok would make a good president, he's highly qualified in all the areas needed. Kirsan Iljumzhinov never had the qualifications to do this job, and was elected in the first place because he had the finances to bail out an organisation made insolvent by Florencio Campomanes. But this support, and I'm by no means convinced as to his motivation, has come at too higher price. I do however fear that if he loses the winning candidate may find some nasty financial surprises. But right now I'd rather see bankruptcy, as I did at the time of his first election. I haven't touched these issues for years because its seemed to me pointless to get worked up about FIDE when change was so unlikely. I'm not optimistic this time either but if Bessel Kok can't get elected president in opposition to Iljumzhinov, no-one can.
