Limpopo Junior Chess criteria for selecting Limpopo teams are as follow:
There will be seven qualifying tournaments.
In each tournament a player can score points by finishing under the first fifteen places, e.g. 1st. place 15 points, 2nd. place 14 points, etc.
A player may play in all the tournaments but only the three tournaments in which he scored the highest points will be added to his credit.
If a player played in less than three tournaments, all the points scored will be added to his credit.
At the end of the last tournament, the five players with the highest points will be chosen for the teams. The teams will only be announced on the day of the final trials. The selected players will have to play on the day of the trials to determine their board positions.
Other players with a reasonable chance in being selected for the teams, also considering the possibility of withdrawals, will be invited to play at the trials. At the trials, points between 1 and 15 can also be earned.
To select the rest of the team, the points a player earned in the tournaments is calculated as a point out of 60 and the points earned at the trials as a point out of 40. The two points are then added together and the players with the highest points are also selected for the teams.
In the event of a withdrawal, the player next on the list will be invited.
The selection criteria are used for the past three years and no problem occurred yet because all players, their parents and schools are informed in the beginning of the year and should exactly know what the criteria are.
