WOMEN'S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP IN TORONTO
Toronto, ON, Canada August 7, 2002 – The Ontario
Women's Chess Championship is to be held at the Dutton
Chess Club in Toronto from August 12-21, 2002. This
chess tournament will see SEVEN of the top female chess
players competing against each other to determine who is
the Ontario Women's Champion.
This
event is believed to be the first ever provincial
championship for women. The tournament is being held to
help efforts to promote the game of chess to more women
in Ontario.

Freedman Memorial
10-Player Round Robin @ DCC
Bernard Freedman (1894-1983)
was a Toronto diamond
merchant who formed the modern CFC in 1932 and served
as its FIDE Representative from 1932-57. He sponsored
Yanofsky and other juniors, and organized the 1957
World Junior Championship in Toronto. The
Bernard Freedman Memorial is a 10-player Round Robin, 9 games. This event will
run alongside the 2nd CMA Futurity IM Norm event and the
Ontario Women's and will be of interest to juniors and
others rated 1900+.

17 year old from North York who scored
8 out of 9 to win clear first place and $225
cash prize! Sam
Haziprodromu won clear second place for $125 cash
from the $350 Prize Fund!

"PI" ACTIVE CHESS CHAMPION
Giorgi Khomeriki
won the "best of three" final
championship 2-0 at the Bay on Queen
Street in Toronto to become the 1999 PI
Active Chess Champion. Mr.
Khomeriki defeated Thursday's qualifying
Champion Florante Alcaide with a solid
"positional" style play that
made the final outcome never in
doubt. Mr. Khomeriki, visiting from
Georgia, formerly a republic of the USSR,
and now an independent republic, won
$220. cash as well as a generous
Fragrance Gift Basket courtesy of
Givenchy and the Bay. Mr. Alcaide
who won $100 on Thursday was also
presented with a lovely basket as the
official runner-up. The final event
on Saturday was packed and spectators
enjoyed the fast-paced chess action while
shopping and preparing for the upcoming
holiday season. All of the games from the
two qualifying rounds follow...

TOURNAMENT WIN AT MONDAY NIGHT EVENT
International Master Tom O'Donnell scored
his 2nd consecutive Monday Night
15-Minute Tournament Championship with 4
wins and 2 draws at the Dutton Chess Club
on Monday, December 20, 1999. The
tournament, the "Final 15-Minute of
the Century" drew an extremely
strong field of 16 players with half of
them masters! Mr. O'Donnell won $40
cash while 2nd place co-finishers Srdan
Zlobec and Bosko Maric split the $30 2nd
place money. Nikola Brajkovic won
the Under 2100 first prize of $25. while
Richard Ruiz scooped his "weekly
allowance" of $17. second place
money.
A total of $112 in cash prizes was
awarded. No membership fee is
required and 70% of the $10 entry fees
are returned to the prize fund.
This popular Monday night event will
return in the new year on Monday, January
3rd, 2000 - circle your Y2K calendar and
come on out with $10. cash and join the
growing crowd of members and players at
the Dutton Chess Club at 1681 Bayview
