Advanced Chess School

Advanced Chess School is an interactive instructive tutorial for those inexperienced players, both children and adults, who have already learnt the chess rules. Thus it can be considered as a continuation of Chess School for Beginners by Grandmaster Yury Razuvaev.

The chess material for Advanced Chess School was prepared by Nikolay Zhuravlev , chess master from Latvia, famous trainer and author of many books for beginners and intermediate players.

Over 1,200 instructive examples. The program may be useful for individuals as well as for coaches and teachers. After studying theory, you can exam yourself in Test mode.

  • 55 lessons with more than 450 instructive examples illustrate basic chess principles.
  • Over 750 quiz problems and the built-in playing engine allow to test your chess knowledge.
  • Multiple users are allowed, with independent ratings for each. Statistics are stored.

This course makes an intermediate player from a beginner!

The program contains 2 large courses, "Theory – Essential Chess Knowledge" and "Playing Instructive Examples"

I. Theory - Essential Chess Knowledge. A lot of theoretical material with easy-to-learn explanations. Includes five sections:

    1) Utilizing a Decisive Material Advantage;

    2) The Three Stages of a Chess Game;

    3) Basic Pawn Endings;

    4) The Fundamentals of Chess Tactics;

    5) Utilizing a Material or Positional Advantage.

You have to find the most important moves. When you try to solve a problem and propose a wrong move, the program helps you with various visual hints (such as arrows showing key lines of attack), and, at last, it shows the piece which is to move.

II. Playing Instructive Examples.

To improve your chess knowledge, play selected instructive positions against the built-in playing program. There are three types of positions.

    1) Mating Alone King.

    2) Converting a Decisive Material Advantage into a Win.

    When you fail to utilize your advantage, the program shows you the quickest winning continuation.

    3) Playing from Any Position (in this mode "Chess School" operates as a playing program).

A fter you have solved a problem, you are given an ELO rating. This rating is based on the difficulty of the problem, the time taken, and what errors if any you made. Your original rating (as stated by yourself) is adjusted up or down after each exercise. Multiple users are allowed , with independent ratings for each. The results of solving exercises are stored and can be compared for different students. Thus the program may be useful for individuals as well as for coaches and teachers.

The program automatically selects test positions for every student depending on his level and the problems solved previously. Test results show the level of student's knowledge in the given theme.

The Help file is detailed, as well as the manual.

Killer Moves by George Renko

If you occupy yourself with chess - i.e. study games, variations, endgames etc. - you store a lot of pictures in your memory, consciously or subconsciously. The more of these you can retrieve during a game, the better you play. Of course, there are also a number of additional factors determining the successful realization of this theory in practice. Still, the learning of pictures and motifs is the essential thing for having success in chess. And the most effective method of doing this is to study tactical positions and combinatory motifs. George Renko, mathematician and chess trainer, has compiled a huge number of tactical sample positions. After the main course - his CD "Intensive Course Tactics" - the author now serves the desert "Killer Moves" - multipurpose moves usually forcing an immediate decision. The nine databases are split up according to difficulty and contain about 1.600 tasks, partially composed, partially taken from practical games. During this training course the author doesn´t dwell on lengthy explanations - according to the motto "one picture says more than a thousand words". Language: English and German

School of Elementary Tactics by Martin Weteschnik

Martin Weteschnik has made a name for himself as an author of several books on chess tactics. His first CD consists of two parts. In the first database he dwells on his theories on tactics, while the second database he makes use of the advantages of a modern database program, above all the function training question - a test makes the theoretically schooled user ready for practice. In both databases, the author has used the modern techniques of audio and videoclips. Here is an extract from the introduction to "The School of Elementary Tactics": "What constitutes a combination? Which parts are actually ´combined'? These are the elements - the tactical elements and motifs - that are combined. To show and explain them is subject of this CD. For the first time you will find the tactical motifs explained down to their primary parts. This will give you a real profound comprehension to utilise and work with these elements! Naturally you will be able to use the motifs thereafter much more effectively, as if you would exercise to solve combinations solely. Or do you think one should try to write a novel before learning the letters, the words and the grammar?!" Language: English and German
