Happy New Year and Best Wishes for a fun and
active chess community in the GTCL

As a new year approaches, I take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped and is helping us in improving the chess community in the Greater Toronto Area.

Our major achievement of the year has been the obtaining of excellent facilities for GTCL events at Tartu College at 310 Bloor. Because this space had to be scheduled, the impact of these facilities will be visible in this 2004 year, starting in February, with major weekend tournaments almost every month for the rest of the year! This will allow us quality space, good playing conditions, and the capability of hosting larger events with 100-250 participants.

Our goal is to also make events more fun for all participants. Our GTCL Capped Team Tournament on November 29th, was the first event at the new facilities. The competition was tough, and the free pizza and drinks added to a good social time during a short break. A Kitchener Team won the event!  I challenge all GTCL clubs to send teams for our next Capped Team Event in March. We are looking for sponsors to help with food and support for these events.

Another goal is to have more GTCL Chess Clubs participate in GTCL activities. In this regard I offer all GTCL Clubs the opportunity to raise money for their club and to run one or more of the upcoming events. The GTCL will arrange to space, and help. A 12% TD fee can be allocated to the TD or to the club who is sponsoring and running the event. The GTCL will advertise and guarantee the top prizes for a number of the events. If you are interested contact me, Barry Thorvardson, at 905-846-8467.

To enhance attendance, the GTCL will be doing something like the Lotteries and the bingo halls do. Specifically that we reserve a percentage of the tournament proceeds towards bonus cash prizes in each section. If the winner of the section wins all their games, they win the top section prize plus the bonus. Over the year different sections will miss earning the bonus, which will be added to that sections bonus for the next event in the series. For example if the Top Open Prize was $700 plus a bonus of $300 for a possible $1,000. If the next three tournaments miss the bonus, the top prize might increase to $700 plus $1,200 bonus to a total of $1,900. Just like more people play the lottery when the prize is higher, hopefully more people will start to play. Only *LOTTO BONUS* events will have this extra support.

From 1999 until the end of 2002, Dutton Chess ran professionally organized, monthly CFC-rated Toronto Chess Tournaments.  We offered large class prizes, demonstration boards, prompt computer pairings in air-conditioned facilities.
The
Dutton Chess Club on Bayview, at one time had almost 200 Members in the year 2000.  Continued declining tournament attendance, coupled with a dramatic drop in the Club membership to less that 70 Members, resulted in the PERMANENT CLOSING OF THE DUTTON CHESS CLUB ON BAYVIEW after the 32nd Active Chess Tournament on December 21st, 2002.
