     Junior Orange Bowl Scholastic Chess Championships

Barbados sent 11 players to the Junior Orange Bowl Scholastic Chess Championships which was held on 27th, 28th and 29th of December, 2004 at Embassy Suite Hotel, Miami.

Barbados Team won the 13-15 division & placed third in 16-19 division.  Justin Blackman came 2nd in 10-12 division, Shamel Howell was 3rd and Martyn Del Castilho was 6th in 13-15 division and Muralidhar Areti came 8th and Dominic Del Catilho was 9th in 16-19 Division. T&T won both U9 & 10-12 divisions.   Results..

Ladies National Championship is underway at Sagicor Sports Club. Teresa Howell wins the championship with a score of 5.5/6.  Defending Champion Rashida Corbin is edged out on a tie break.  Details..

Sub-Zonals 2.3 is being held from 27th September to 3rd October, 2004. (now 11 Round Swiss due to participation of only 3 countries - Barbados, T&T & Ecuador).  Terry Farley, FM Philip Corbin, Neil Yarde & Muralidhar Areti are competing.  After 11 rounds FM Corbin is placed 7th with a score of 6.5/11; Murali - 4.5/11; Terry Farley - 4/11 & Neil Yarde - 3.5/11.  

Curacao Chess Festival

GM Sandipan Chanda (IND) wins the Curacao Chess Festival.  Muralidhar Areti, U20 Barbados Junior National Champion, wins (5/9) the best unrated prize and Martyn Del Castilho, Sagicor Open Junior Champion;  with a score of 4.5/9 comes second in the unrated category.  Details..

The Junior Nationals for U20 was completed on 10th July,  2004.The winners are -- U12 Saeed Norville;  U14 Ryan Harewood;  U16 Martyn Del Castilho and  U20 Muralidhar Areti.  Details.. 

This year's open Junior has attracted 74competitors, about 22 overseas players from T&T (11), Suriname (5), Jamaica (2), Curacao (2) & Venezuela (2) are participating.  Martyn Del Castilho is the new Champion.  Second place winner was Marvin Dekker from Curacao and Dominic Del Castilho wins the third place. The Junior Squad competing in the Championship being held by Trinidad & Tobago Chess Foundation fro 5th to 9th July 2004.  Martyn Del Castilho wins the U16 championship and Craig Clermond comes second in the U16 division.  Murali is 5th in the U20 division.  Felix Huggins is 4th in U14 division.  Alex Jackman & tyrone Franklyn are 4th & 5th in U12 divison.
