2006 CGI Barbados National Championships

2006 CGI Nationals came to conclusion on 29th October after the final round of Ladies Nationals.  Corrine Howard, Combermere student won the ladies' championship with a perfect score (6/6).  The Final top ten positions are: 1. Corinne Howard, 2. Melissa Sookhram, 3. Cheri=Ann Parris, 4. Jaesa Bowen, 5. Coumaries Mansour, 6. Teresa Howell, 7. Mia Mascoll, 8, Juanita Garnett, 9. Margaret Prince and 10. Lizza Corbin

The National Championships Finals were played at Harrison College from 23 Sep 2006 to 16 Oct 2006.  The twelve competing finalists are: FM Delisle Warner, NM Terry Farley, FM Philip Corbin, Shammel Howell, Martyn Del Castilho, Michael Barker, Alex Jackman, Othneil Harewood, Justin Blackman, Allan Herbert, Dr. Kumar Areti and Wendel Meusa. National Mater Terry Farley wins the Championship without a defeat in the Finals.  The former Champion FM Delisle Warner is placed second and hands over the D Blade's Challenger Shield. 2006 Second Qualifier

The Second Qualifier for the Barbados National Championships has started on 28th August 2006 and completed on 16th September 2006 at Harrison College.  IM Kevin Denny tops with perfect 9.  Demetrio Moore, Michael Barker, Alex Jackman, Othneil Harewood and Justin Blackman qualify for the CGI National Finals. 50 turn up for chess qualifier

The 2006 Sagicor Open Junior Chess Championships concluded successfully on 28th July 2006.  Ms. Angela Greaves, Marketing advisor for Sagicor delivered the sponsor's speech during opening ceremony.  Former Olympian and President of Olympians Barbados, Ms. Freida Nicholls delivered the feature address to the young chess players highlighting the Olympic spirit.  The tournament was won by Martyn Del Castilho for the third consecutive time.  Justin Blackman came second and Christopher Raphael of T&T came third.  Details....  Registration...  Round1..  Round 2..   Round 3..  Round 4..  Round 5..  Round 6..  Round 7..  Round 8.. 

Bajans perform even at the Chess Olympiad. : IM Kevin Denny scored 6/11 on board 1.  NM Terry Farley fought hard on board 2 or 1 but could manage only 4.5/11.  FM Delisle Warner on board 3 or 2 had a slow start but had a wonderful finish with 5 straight wins in the last 5 rounds to end up with a score of 6/10 and a gain of 19 rating points. FM Dr. Philip Corbin secured 50% result with 5.5/11.  1st reserve Dirk Austin  could only manage 1/5 score.  2nd reserve Justin Blackman did well to get 1.5/3 and gained 12 rating points.  Overall the team scored 24.5/52 (47%) and maintained its 97th position ahead of T&T and Jamaica.

Heroes Day Cup 2006 (April 26 - May 1)

IM Augusto Moran of Ecuador cruised home to his first Digicel RBTT Heroes Day Cup, when he defeated Bajan Junior Shamel Howell in Round 7 action and drew with Suriname Co-Champion Dewperkash Gajadin in the final round.  IM Moran sponsored by Western Union topped the standings with a score of 7/8 one year ahead of last year's champion Terry Farley of Barbados.  Dirk Austin of Barbados was placed third.  Community College lad Shamel Howell of Barbados picked up the prize for best placed under 2100 rated player.

Barbados Junior Nationals 2006:

The junior Nationals was played at Harrison College from 25th March 2006.  Under 20 was played on 25th March, 1st and 8th April 2006.  Under 12 & Under 16 was played on 27th, 28th & 29th March 2006.  Under 14 was played on 3rd, 4th & 5th April 2006.  Invitation...  Registration...

Under 20: All juniors were allowed to compete in this division.  The defending champion Martyn Del Castilho could not compete because of exams.  However the competition was intense and Wendell Meusa of Ellerslie became the 2006 Junior Champion of Barbados by scoring 5.5/6.  Justin Blackman of Queen's College was second with 4.5/6 and Alex Jackman of Lester Vaughn came 3rd with the same score.  Shammell Howell BCC came 4th and Sumant Nanduri of Queen's came 5th.  Corinne Howard the rapidly improving girl's player came 6th and qualified to be on the Barbados U20 Junior Squad. 

 

Under 16: Justin Blackman of Queen's College, who is the only FIDE rated player in the section has won this section comfortably with 5.5/6.  Corinne Howard bounced back in this section to score 4.5/6 to take second place.  Alex Jackman and Sumant Nanduri have to settle for 3rd and 4th places with same scores. 

 

 

Under 14: This section has seen the largest turn out of youngsters.  Nearly 34 junior players competed in this section.  There was tough fight for the championship.  Alex Jackman (5.5/6) edged out Sumant Nanduri (5/6) to become the champion with 5.5/6. Asabi Layne of Lester Vaughn and Akeel Gill of St. Leonards came 3rd and 4th with 4.5/6.  Shawn Durant, Dario Mayers, Adrian Guppy, Nicholas Rock, Daryl Headley, Justin Niles and Rohanson Waithe shared 5-11 with a score of 4/6.

 

 Under 12: This competition has seen an emergence of a pleasant young boy always smiling and playing far beyond his age and scoring perfect 6/6 to take the championship.  We hope that this St. Jude's Boy will be the player to watch in the future.  Mansour Xavier (5/6) of St. Winifred's has taken the second place.  3rd, 4th, and 5th place went to Nicholas Blackman, Alex Guppy and Joshua Blanchard with scores of 4/6.

 

 

United Insurance Inter-School girls' Championship was held on 10th, 11th and 12th April 2006.  The and Lodge School wins the championship.  ColeridgeParry and Alexandra shared the second spot.

Resurgence of Club Activities in Barbados:  Indicating that the clubs are becoming more active, Inter-club team championships were held at UWI, organized by Mr. Dirk Austin.  Romulans were unstoppable.  Power Pawns couldn't stun them.  Team UWI were shown that they had to work harder and Doctors got a taste of their own bitter Medicine.  Details..

 

2006 Interschool Chess ChampionshipS:: The Interschool Championships for primary school & secondary schools was held at St. Leonards Boys' School from 11th February 2006 to 4th March, 2006.  St. Gabriel's School wins the Primary School Division.  The Lodge School A teams win all the three age category divisions. The First Qualifier for the Barbados National Championships has come to a conclusion on 15th Feb 2006 at Harrison College.  NM Terry Farley wins the tournament undefeated with 8.5/9.  Dr. Philip Corbin (7/9), Kelvin Daniel (6/9), Shamel Howell (6/9) and Martyn Del Castilho (6/9) qualify for the National finals.  Details... Tertiary & Secondary Premier Chess League

The second Tertiary & Secondary Premier League is being played at Harrison College.  This is a 5 Round, Round Robin Tournament.  The Lodge School lads take the Championship by edging out BCC team.  The UWI team is placed third  Details....  Games..

GM Nigel Short visits Barbados

GM Nigel Short receiving mementos from Mr. Peter  Dawson (BCF) and Mr. Steve Stoute, President, BOA. 

GM Nigel Short, Secretary General of Commonwealth Chess Association visited Barbados from 14th to 18th January, 2006.  On 15th he met the Olympiad team and spoke to them regarding certain strategies for preparing for the Olympiad.  He gave a simultaneous chess exhibition against 31 players.  FM Dr. Philip Corbin is the only player to come up with a win. Alex Jackman, Wendell Meusa and Anthony Yearwood managed draws.  On 16th he met with BOA President and Secretary General, National Sports Council Director Mr. King.  He discussed the possibility of conducting 2008 Commonwealth Chess Championships in Barbados.  GM Short also was interviewed by the personnel from local news papers.  On 17th he appeared in CBC show, "Mornin'  Barbados".
