personal
space/time relevancy: 1976 through 1979
opened several angles after
the Sex Pistols battering ram:
politics, focus, and eclecticism. of
course, as with all great bands, there had to be tension and
dynamics. the pop wannabe rock star Mick Jones vs. the loud mouth
preacher with a message in Strummer. the balance created is
startling. the only thing keeping this unit from perfection was a
consistently grooving drummer on recordings (you can hear great spark
from live bootlegs in the case of Topper, but somehow it never
translated in the studio). - @Om* 3/9/02

Nevin, and Kerry Dixon. Joe is a big Chelsea fan...

studios in Jamaica.

a Bhuddist allusion.

The Lash (1983)

- Janie Jones was the
real-life inspiration for the song of the same name on the Clash's
first album, though few of the group's American fans ever learned the
full story behind this British weirdo. A mid-'60s cabaret performer
with more of a snarl than a voice, she was more renowned in London for
her parties than her music, and gained some of her biggest headlines in
1964 by attending a film premiere in a topless gown. She had a small
U.K. hit single (#46) in 1965 with the Halloweenish
novelty "Witches Brew," and issued several other 45s in the 1960s that,
with their burlesque camp, were a lot closer in spirit to Mae West than
the swinging '60s. When she tried to play it straighter with songs by
the likes of Jimmy Webb and British hit songwriters Carter/Lewis, her
vocal shortcomings were all too apparent. She remained on the fringes of the public eye with a marriage
to songwriter John Christian Dee (author of the Pretty Things' great
early British Invasion raunch classic "Don't Bring Me Down"), but
didn't really hit the papers until a seven-year prison
sentence in 1973 on a charge of controlling prostitutes. After her
release from jail in 1977, she got Joe Strummer to write a song for
her, "House of the Ju-Ju Queen," which she recorded with the Clash in
the studio; it was released on a 1983 single credited to Janie Jones
and the Lash. She published her memoirs, The Devil and Miss Jones, in
1993.

_Louie Is A Punk Rocker_ 7"
bootleg (1977)
Apart from
'Louie Louie' the EP contains "King of the Road", "White Riot" and
"1977". The label is blank but apparently the music is from a Clash
concert in Malmö, Sweden in October, 1977. Apart from the
obvious line 'Louie Louie, me gotta go' the lyrics are improvised.

- "Capitol Air"
I don't like the government where I live
I don't like dictatorship of the Rich
I dion't like bureaucrats telling me what to eat
I dont' like Police dogs sniffing round my feet
I don't like Communist Censorship of my
books
I don't like Mraxists complaining about my looks
I don't like Castro insulting members of my sex
Leftists insisting we got the mystic Fix
I don't like Capitalists selling me gasoline Coke
Multinationals burning Amazon trees to smoke
Big Corporation takeover media mind
I don't like the Top-bananas that're
robbing Guatemala
banks blind
I don't like K.G.B. Gulag concentration camps
I don't like Maoists' Cambodian Death Dance
15 Million were killed by Stalin Secretary of Terror
He has killed out old Red Revolutionary for ever
I don't like Anarchists screaming Love Is Free
I don't like the C.I.A. they killed John Kennedy
Paranoiac tanks sit in Prague and Hungary
But I don't like counterrevolution paid for by the C.I.A.
Tyranny in Turkey or Korea Nineteen Eighty
I don't like Right Wing Death Squad Democracy
Police State Iran NIcaragua yesterday
Laissez-faire please Government keep your secret police offa me
I don't like Nationalist Supremacy White or Black
I don't like Narcs & Mafia marketing Smack
The General bullying Congress in his tweed vest
The President building up his Armies East & West
I don't like Argentine police assassinating Jews
Government Terrorists takeover Salvador news
I don't like Zionists acting Nazi Storm Troop
Palestine Liberation cooking Israel into Moslem soup
I don't like the Crown's Official Secrets Act
You can get away with murder in the Government that's a fact
Security cops teargassing radical kids
In Switzerland or Czechoslovakia god Forbids
In America it's Attica in Russia it's Lubianka Wall
In China if you disappear you wouldn't know yourself at all
Arise Arise you citizens of the world use your lungs
Talk back to the Tyrants all they're afraid of is your tongues
Two hundred Billion dollars inflates World War
In United States every year They're asking for more
Russia's got as much in tanks and laser planes
Give or take Fifty Billion we can blow out everybody's brains
School's broke down 'cause Histroy changes every night
Half the Free World nations are Dictatorships of the Right
The only place socialism works in is astericks bud
The Communist world's stuck together with prisoner's
blood
The Generals say they know something worth fighting for
They never say what till they start an unjsut war
Iranian hostage Media Hysteria sucks
The Shah ran away with 9 Billion Iranian bucks
Col. Roosevelt and his U.S. dollars overthrew Mossadeq
They wanted his oil then they got Ayatollah's dreck
They put in the Shah and they trained his police the Savak
All Iran was out hostage quarter-century That's right Jack
Bishop Romero wrote President Carter to stop
Guns to El Salvador's Junta so he got shot
Ambassador White blew the whistle on the White House lies
Reagan called him home cause he looked in dead nuns' eyes
Half the voters didn't vote they knew it was too late
Newspaper headlines called it a big Mandate
Some people voted for Reagan eyes open wide
3 out of 4 didn't vote for him That's a Landslide
Truth may be hard to find but
Falsehood's easy
Read between the lines out Imperialism is sleazy
If you think the People'e State is your Heart's Desire
Jump right back in the frying pan from the fire
The System the System in Russia & China the same
Criticize the System in Budapest lose your name
Coca Cola Pepsi Cola in Russia
& China come true
Krushchev yelled in Hollywood "We will bury You"
America and Russia want to bomb themselves Okay
Everybody dead on both sides Everybody pray
All except the Generals in caves where they can hide
And fuck each other in the ass waiting for the next free ride
No hope Communism no hope Capitalism Yeah
Everybody's lying on both sides Nyeah nyeah nyeah
The bloody iron curtain of American Military Power
Is a mirror image of Russia's red Babel-Tower
Jesus Christ was spotless but was Crucified by the Mob
Law & Order Herod's hired soldiers did the job
Flowerpower's fine but innocence has got no Protection
The man who shot John Lennon had a Hero-worshipper's
connection
The moral of this song is that the world is in a horrible place
Scientific Industry devours the human race
Police in every country armed with Tear Gas & TV
Secret Masters everywhere bureacrtize for you & me
Terrorists and polce together build an upperclass Rage
Propaganda murder manipulates the middlesclass Stage
Can't tell the difference 'tween a turkey & a provocateur
If you'r feeling confused the Government's in there for sure
Aware Aware wherever you are No Fear
Trust your heart Don't ride your
Paranoia dea
Breathe together with an ordinary mind
Armed with Humor Feed & Help Enlighten Woe Mankind

- _Virgin Radio Interview (3/16/03)_ MP3 (60:38)(56.9megs)
- includes gaff MP3 where announcer claims Joe Strummer (now
deceased) will be joining the program
- Paul reveals: when The Clash played the
US Festival , they demanded that Steve
Wozniak Wozniak Donate $100,000 to the homeless in San Bernardino
or they would refuse to get on stage. . he relented, they played, but
the US Festival crew were giving them shit and wouldn't let them onto
their encores. one of them was beating up on Mick until Paul came in
and intervened.

- _Talking To The Clash_ bootleg interview
picture disc 7"/MP3 (1978)
- Contains an interview with Paul Simonon
& Topper Headon, recorded some time between November 24, 1978
(release of _Tommy Gun_) and December 19, 1978 (Sid Vicious Benefit
show). The pictures, however, are ca. 1984-85 and show Joe & Paul
on one side, and a head shot of Joe on the other. The same interview is
on both sides of the disc.
- _Joe Strummer Interview_ bootleg picture
disc 12" (1984)
- MP3x8
- Live pictures (ca. 1982-83) of Joe
Strummer on side A, and Mick Jones on side B, although the interview is
just Joe, and is from 1984. A ranting interview ("The Clash
compared to the Pentagon is smaller than a flea on a flea on an
elephant!", "Clash is gonna take the drug out of drug!", "...and all
this just adds to the nuclear war!", etc.) He also spends some
time badmouthing Mick ("... it was like dragging a dead dog around
on a bit of string!"). "Last Gang in Town" refers to this
interview as being from "Spring, 1984" which may be when it was
broadcast, if it ever was (the interviewer is apparently a TV guy.)
Based on Joe's comments, though, it was probably recorded sometime
between February 1st and 10th, 1984 (Joe says that they "just
toured California" and later points out his guitar and amplifier
which are packed and ready to go, so it may have been between the US
and UK 'Out of Control' tours.")
excerpt:
Q: has your honesty hurt your
sanity?
JS: of course it has. in a world
that builds on illusion. advertising is illusion... [...] in america,
they're gone... i tell you they're gone... you go to california.. i'm
talking really simple basic things.. you touch a piece of wood....
wrong! this wood is not wood. this wood looks like wood. [...] people smile at you... wrong! they've been told by the
management to smile at you. so really, you're not seeing anything
that's real... not the objects,
the buildings, the signs, everything is fake. [...] and what they get
we will get later... if the world is moving towards that then i'm not
interested... i like to come back here cause here in london we have
reality, we have people shoving you out the way... that gesture, it's
clear. this guy's in a bad mood and he's shoving me out the way... that
is real communication... in california, they'll sue you. they'll sue
you or smile at you while he's thinking of shoving you out the way...

Marley was so impressed he wrote the song
_Punky Reggae Party_. John Lydon absorbs ska & reggae as a
kid, paul simonon experiences people literally dancing in the
streets to ska & reggae, joe strummer, descriptions of the summer
1967 race riots against the rasta gathering by the police, reggae as
the only rebel music in london before punk, as well as a sense of
underground and cool. don letts felt the soundtrack was totally natural
for everyone at the roxy as background music. there were no punk
records at the time to play... there was never any fights.
- _Punky Reggae Party Part 2 of 3_ (28:04)(26.3megs)
- john lydon says don't imitate reggae.
paul simonon & mick jones explains it's their spin on reggae, not a
copy. paul explains that as a bassist he learned how to play it using
reggae tracks . mick jones & joe strummer visit kingston jamaica -
first punks rastas have ever seen. they had a hard time when they went
out looking for weed. they stayed in the hotel room most of the time
writing their songs. white man in hammersmith palais as the best tune
joe strummer penned - highly unusual pace and rhythm for punk. by the
time london calling came out they had a ton of reggae influenced tunes
and were comfortable playing the style by then. mikey dread
collaboration. mikey dread on the danger of crossing over to punk
audiences. mikey dread on the spitting audience - "in jamaica they
would shoot people like that" - dub's enormous influence in recording -
women in the punk scene highly influenced by reggae - slits - mikey
dread on what he learned from the clash: music as the uniting force. no
black, no white, just music.
