_Barry Lyndon_ (vhs/ntsc) swarms and bulges with exuberant, almost baroque loveliness, both visually and aurally. (Kubrick has drenched it in even more first-rate music than _A Clockwork Orange_, and with more ironic effect.)  But the overwhelming tone of the film is not beautiful but tragic, mordant, even moralistic.  It is primarily a study in what Dr. Timothy Leary calls "mammalian politics," the most primitive circuits in the human nervous system, concerned with power, status, and emotional gameplaying.  In ethological language, the subject is territorial behavior among a domesticated primate species.

• The Film _Raising Arizona_: In the scene where the biker, played by Randall Cobb, bursts into a gas station restroom on his Hog, the camera focuses briefly on the inside of the door just before the biker knocks it down. There is some graffiti on the door - the letters OPE and POE.  This seems a reference to Kubrik's _Dr. Strangelove_, in which Gen. Ripper wouldn't reveal the recall code for the bombers. He had scribbled on a tablet: "purity of essence, piece on earth," as well as anagrams of POE, OPE. Hence, the Coen brothers' nod to Kubrik and/or his film.
