  1. I have created an account, but I still can't login. Why?
You need to validate your account first. You should receive an email telling you how to validate your account immediately after you create your account. Please make sure that your email is valid and current. For certain email service, you may have to wait a few hours for the email to arrive even though our server sends you the email immediately.
      Back
  2. I created an account but I do not use it for a long time. Why can't I use it now?
If you create an account but do not activate it within 7 days, the account will be removed. For an account that has already been activated, if you do not use it for 4 months, its scores will be reset back to that of a new account, and if you do not use it for 6 months, the account will be removed. Once removed, an account would be available for other people to create.
  3. Why didn't I receive my activation code after I create an account?
Make sure your email address is usable. We receive a lot of bounced mails, because the email is misspelled, the email is invalid, or the email storage space is full, etc. You may want to send yourself an email to check whether your email is ok. You can ask the server to resend your activation code using this page.
      Back
  4. I lost my password, how do I retrieve it?
You can ask our server to send you the password here.
      Back
  5. I try to retrieve my password and receive an error message that my email address is not on file. Why?
Your email is NOT in our database. You may have given us a different email address (or not given any at all) when you registered your account.
      Back
  6. My email is no longer valid. How do I update it?
If you still have your password, you can use this link to update your account. Make sure you login first before clicking on the link above.
      Back
  7. I lost my password, and my email is no longer valid. How do I use my account?
You cannot use your account without either password or email. There is no way to authenticate yourself with the server.
      Back
  8. What is a minor account, and what is COPPA?
US federal law, through Children Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires websites to obtain approval from parents before they can collect information such as email from minors (under 13 years of age). If you are under 13 years of age, or claim to be under 13 years of age, please do not register. CXQ currently cannot accomodate minors. For more information, please check our Term of Services.
      Back
  9. I couldn't login. There is a message saying "Connection failed". What's wrong?
You probably have a firewall on yourside. You may want to select the 1nd check box (firewall support) on the login form so that the client attempt to connect to the server via port 23, which many firewalls don't block.
      Back
  10. I'm using windows XP. How do I play?
In general, if your computer doesn't support java, you need to download the java plug in from java.sun.com . Internet explorer in Windows XP may not be shipped with java installed.
      Back
  11. There is a blank window popping up, and it looks frozen. What's wrong?
Your computer probably has problem. Restart your computer probably helps. The Java Virutal Machine (JVM) in your browser may be frozen, and our applet can't run without this JVM.
      Back
  12. The server said my IP is banned. Why?
From time to time, operators in the club have to ban people. Most ban last 60 minutes. Some last a day or more. As IP is a shared resource, especially for people using dial up accounts, someone in your domain, probably unknown to you, are behaving badly at the server. Please try again a few hours later.
      Back
  13. I got banned, could you unban me?
If you are banned, please wait for your ban to expire. The server will unban you automatically.
      Back
  14. I lost my password, how do I retrieve it?
You can ask our server to send you the password here.
      Back
  15. My account is suspended for no reason. Why?
You probably don't know the reason.

Even though we reserve the right to delete any account for any or no reason at all, operators at the site are always very careful when deleting accounts. Please try not to use offensive words or phrase in your account name. Sometimes, this is purely accidental. Do not mess up the normal operation of the club, say by cheating, exploit server bug, or hacking/attacking the site, or create too many accounts. Also, do not ever let someone to know your password, and do not use someone else account. There are cases when people have no clue why their accounts are deleted, only to find out that their seemingly innocent friends used their accounts and did bad things at the site, hacking and cheating for example. The server only knows bad IP address and accounts seen from those addresses.

In general, if your account is suspended, you are NOT welcome at this site.
      Back

  16. I keep getting "reconnected". Why?
Your connection is probably bad. If the connection from the client on your computer is terminated without proper notification from the server, the client will repeatedly attempt to connect back to the server.
      Back
  17. I keep getting kick out. This happens to me many times. Why?
You can only login once. If by mistake, you login twice, one of the two connections will be dropped. Please do NOT share your account with anyone else. If you give your account to a friend, they can login with your nick while you are playing, and this may cause nasty problem for you.
      Back
  18. The game screen got frozen. I waited for about 2-3 minutes but nothing happened. After that I got sent to the lobby. What happened?
Your network was down temporarily. The server disconnected you without being able to send you any message. Once your network is up again, the client reconnect to the server.
      Back
  19. How do I block messages from someone who annoys me?
Internet is a diversified environment, where different people have different standard and different expectation. If someone annoys you, or verbally abuse you, you can block all message from that person, using:
        /ignore screenname
        e.x. /ignore badguy
If you want to report to operators, type a message and press F6. Operators may not be available at all time.
      Back
  20. How do I make my table private?
You can only make a table private if you are the owner of the table, i.e. you open the table yourself. If you are the owner type:
        /private enter_key
        /private my_secret_key
to make the table private. If you want someone to enter your private table, ask that person to type:
        /join table enter_key
        /join 12 my_secret_key
      Back
  21. How do I eject someone out of my table?
You can only eject someone out of your table if you own the table, and the person you want to eject is not playing on your table. Type:
        /eject someone
        e.x. /eject bad_guy
to eject someone from your table.
      Back
  22. Is there any documentation for the software?
There is a limitted documentation for the software. Type "/?" to access the most frequently used features.
  23. How do I contact operators?
You can type a message and press F6. The message will be sent to operators if they are available.
  24. How do the timers work?
There are 3 timers. The first timer is for game time, the maximum remaining time you have for the current game. The second timer is for move time, the maximum remaining time you have for the current move. The last timer is for free time. When your game time is out, the free time is the maximum time you have for each move.

You can change the default setting for these timers. Click on Options at the beginning of the game while you're playing red.

  25. How do I give my opponent more time?
Click on Options, enter the times to be added to the 3 clocks on boxes next to the button "Add times", then click on that "Add times" button.
      Back
  26. Can I add time to myself?
The server doesn't allow you to add time to yourself. By default, when your time runs out, you lose the game. Your opponent may add time to you if he/she wants, though he/she doesn't have to do so before your time runs out.
      Back
  27. I saw someone add time for himself/herself. He did not run out of time. How did he/she do it?
What you see is an artifact of network lag. The time it takes to send some moves in the internet varies. When your network (or your opponent's network) lags, either you or your opponent (or both) sees the other "adding" time to oneself. The amount of time that appears to be added is an indication of how bad the network is at that moment. This can be up to a 2-3 minutes per move . Please do not ignorantly accuse your opponent of cheating.
      Back
  28. I saw that my opponent was running out of time in a game, yet the server recorded that I lost that game. Did my opponent cheat?
You may want to check your network connection. Your connection was lagged too much, or worse, temporarily disconnected. The server as well as your opponents likely never saw your last move because of that network lag. When your connection was lived again, your game time or move time was already out, and you only saw that you had lost the game. On the other hand, your opponent simply saw that you didn't make a move within your time limit, and as the result, he/she won the game. Your game record should indicate that you lost the game by time. Please do not ignorantly accuse your opponent of cheating.

  29. What are MEP rules?
MEP rules are drawing rules based on the Maximum total number of moves, the Effective moves, and the Progress of the game. Check CXQ Chess Rules for more information.
  30. How does the points calculated?
CXQ uses ELO scoring system. Check wikipedia for information about this system. Alternatively, you can search for more information with google.
  31. How do I save a game?
There is no need to. All games are saved automatically by the server. You can review all games played at the server using the Records link. Games that are 3 months or older are removed automatically by the server.
      Back
  32. How do I review my old games?
Click on the Records link from the front page, then type your screen name in an appropriate box there.
      Back
  33. How do I save a game to disk?
CXQ saves all games to the server, though it deletes all games that are more than 3 months old. If you want to save your game to your local disk, you can click on the game number in the record web page to see the game moves in WXF format. You can then save that web page to your local harddisk.

To view the game you saved in your harddisk, you need a stand-alone chinese chess viewer. It is recommended that you use Cchview ver 3.5.0, a powerful editor/viewer/database for viewing CXQ saved games.

  34. What do the indicators N, U, S, M, and GM mean?
Most scores have no indicator. When available, the indicator provides additional information about the score.

N (new): indicates that the player is new and the score is not reliable yet. The indicator is temporary and is removed once the number of games reaches 20.

U (unreliable): similar to N, it indicates that the score may not tell the true strength of the player. The person may chat via IM, or using a word processors, or web surfing, or doing some other tasks for an extended period of time while playing. You may have an easier time to beat a multi-tasking opponent, but you may also have to wait a longer time for the person to make moves. In rare cases, you may have a hard time beating an opponent armed with chess analyzing softwares. This indicator is temporary and is removed once the person is no longer distracted for some time.

S (senior): indicates that the person has played many games (1000+ games) and the score is stable. This is a permanent indicator.

M (master) and GM (grandmaster): indicate that the player is good. These are honorary indicators, as they do not provide additional information about the score. A score of 2000+ is labeled as M, and a score of 2250+ is labeled as GM.
