We remember him for the positives. The excitement he brought to the chess community and the world. His youth and brilliance brought this game to the forefront of our nation and the world. He was part of our beginnings providing a chess instruction session and a simul game in Rochester. The photo of him at the demo board here in Rochester is how we like to recall his greatness. His visit here came about as the result of his relationship with Dr. Marchand. Dr. Marchand was an integral part of the Rochester Chess Center and the Rochester Chess Community. We honor him every year with the Marchand Open. The 29th annual Marchand open was held last year and our Proprieter was the Chief TD. Dr. Marchand invited Bobby to Rochester to provide chess instruction and Bobby Fischer did a simultaneous demonstration. The pictures shown are a few from that event. Dr. Marchand told the story of when he was playing in a tournament and Bobby stopped by, briefly looked at the board , said "hmmmm" and moved on. A year later Bobby approached him and asked "did you move the knight?" Dr. Marchand was puzzled. And Bobby said "At the tournament last year, did you move the knight?" With Dr. Marchand still a bit puzzled, Bobby said "Here, let me show you, and proceeded to set up the position exactly as it was a year ago, and went on with his analysis. He was that brilliant that nothing in chess escaped him. | |||||||
