This week the author of the new title Chess Bitch interviews with Chessville on the future of chess from a woman’s point of view, and the reception given to her new book.  Chessville’s readers may not know that the NY Times refused to even use the word “Bitch” from the book’s title even though they commissioned an article by the book’s author about the book.  The Sunday Express in England will also publish an article on women in chess featuring special mention of Jennifer Shahade.

Meanwhile British GM Nigel Short was reported in the London Times 5 December, 2005 on being on the look-out for sexy women chess players.

Russia – Max Dlugy acquitted!  The Solikamsk City Court of Perm Territory acquitted yesterday Max Dlugy, U.S. citizen and former chair of the board of the Solikamsky Magnesium Works, yesterday.  The former rapid chess champion and international grand master was charged with the 48,000 rubles misappropriation and an attempt at the embezzlement of $9 million from the plant’s budget.  The judge Galina Imamieva announced the ruling to acquit Max Dlugy due to the absence of corpus delicti and the abandonment of the testimony by witnesses of the state prosecution.  Mr. Dlugy is also eligible for monetary compensation as he spent two and a half years behind bars.
Russian Chess Chief speaks out.  At a press-conference before the super-final of Russia Championship, the President of the Russian Chess Federation, who is also vice-premier of the government of Russia, second only to Mr. Putin, Mr. A.Zhukov stated that the Russian Chess Federation wants to hold a world-title match between V.Kramnik and FIDE World Champion V.Topalov, but the match's organization is a prerogative of FIDE.  Mr. Zhukov is also the President of the RCF, and stated his opinion to be that FIDE is obliged to carry out this match, instead of to trying to earn money from it by dictating additional financial conditions to Kramnik.

But substantial disagreement exists about who can create or change the entries, and what the content should contain. Reader beware! The USCF board have not engaged in public dialogue since the elections, not even on official business.  No more details on the ChessCafe deal which remains secret, and no comments or engagements on decline in memberships.  Even official business takes nine days to acknowledge, as opposed to answer – at least, this is the Parrot’s experience.  What are 30 people up to?

Speculation is now on the ‘crash’ number below which USCF becomes untenable as an organization.  The December '05 number of 82,500 is almost 5,000 members above this year’s all time low in memberships.

The Parrot asks: What kick starts the US chess engine and then keeps it running?

Susan Polgar promoting chess at a local elementary school and talk radio station in Corpus Christi, Texas last Wednesday, November 30th...
...plus an evening talk to about 150 young players, parents and coaches at Central Catholic Elementary School.  This is a fundraising event to support local chess, to buy USCF memberships for children who cannot afford the memberships and send them to a USCF tournament.  She is encouraging the local schools to send kids to the National K-12 Championship in Houston, Texas.  More than 50 kids in the area went to Houston this Thursday for the USCF National.  Polgar’s activities are provided pro bono Caissa to help promote chess in Texas, especially for girls.

The FIDE World Chess Cup takes place 26th November - 18th December 2005 in Khanty Mansyisk, Russia.  Frankly, the Parrot wasn’t sure where that was even after the chance contact with Joel Lautier en route there his email from Moscow.  Therefore, the Parrot has provided a handy map of the region, by Googling it and 55 sites later found a map – but where is the map situated?

Anyway, Joel did well in his first games, deating Ivanov, Alexander (USA) - Lautier, Joel (FRA) by 0-1,1/2.  Gata Kamsky is also participating, and looks like he got through the first round; Bocharov, Dmitry (RUS) - Kamsky, Gata (USA) 1/2,1/2,1-0,1-0.  And another US player who did very well against the former world champion: Khalifman, Alexander (RUS) - Shulman, Yuri (USA) 1-0,0-1,1-0,0-1,1-0,0-1,1/2, but Alex couldn’t quite defeat his opponent Bruzon, Lazaro (CUB) - Onischuk, Alexander (USA) 1/2,1/2,1-0,1/2.  A big result for Cheparinov, Ivan (BUL) - Ivanchuk, Vassily (UKR) 1-0,1/2, and Pono also gets through 2nd round against Motylev, Alexander (RUS) - Ponomariov, Ruslan (UKR) 1/2,1/2,1/2,0-1. 

Aged 15 on the first day of the tournament here he is!  And he cruises through the second round via Carlsen, Magnus (NOR) - Ammonatov, Farrukh 1-0,1/2  Get used to looking at Magnus – the comparisons at this age are to Fischer and Kasparov.  Other eliminated US players in the first round were GM Nakamura lost to GM Ganguly (Ind) and GM Kudrin lost to GM Eljanov (UKR), and GM Alex ‘Terminator’ Stripunsky lost to GM Areshchenko [UKR].  GM Kaidanov lost to GM Felgaer, Ruben (ARG).  Official site
A charitable evening devoted to a friend of Chessville and in memory of Saint-Petersburg GM Konstantin Aseev (1960 - 2004) took place November, 28th in Saint-Petersburg at the M. Chigorin chess club.  Authors contributing  to a book are GMs S. Ivanov, S. Ionov, the IM A. Lukin.  Anyone wishing to donate to the book should contact S.V.Sudakov (phone 812-5715723).  Chessville commissioned and published GM Aseev’s final annotated game.

The 5th Amplico AIG Life International Chess Tournament - European Rapid Chess Championship to be held from December 17 till December 18, 2005, in Warsaw.  The organizers: The Warsaw Foundation for Chess Development and the Polish Chess Federation.  The information was given by Jan Macieja - Board of Founders, President Warsaw Foundation for Chess Development.
World Junior Championships took place in Istanbul 9th-22nd November 2005.  The Parrot has negotiated the Turkish site with a little guidance from Nigel Short, and discovered that ...

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, [AZE, left] has a performance rating of 2873 and a score of 10.5 points to win the event, whereas the Chinese player Xiaobing Gu [below, on the left] led the women with 5.5 from 6 and with a performance rating of 2672!

She finished with 9.5 points and was nipped at the post by Germany’s Elisabeth Paehtz who scored 10 to win.

Meanwhile computers WHOP human players in Spain.  Of course the computers have opening books they can access without any time penalty at all, while human players cannot.  These sorts of events are now becoming boring to report, but for the record:

II Festival International de Ajedrez took place 19th-23rd November 2005 in Villa de Bilbao.  Man-Machine event.  Players: Ruslan Ponomariov, Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Alexander Khalifman. Junior, Fritz and Hydra.  Time rate was 2 hours for the first 40 moves and an extra hour to finish the game.  Machines won with 8:4.  Official site  Final standings:

Mr. Macropolis of Fide has expressed surprise at the breakdown in talks and begins his statement dated 17 November with, “I read with surprise the announcement of Universal Events Promotion, together with the statement of GM Vladimir Kramnik, which were trying to hold FIDE culpable for the collapse of the negotiations for a match Topalov-Kramnik.” and continues, “Two days ago I was informed by Mr Danailov [editor’s note: Topalov’s manager] that the Kramnik side rejected the idea of holding the match within FIDE's authority and the proposal for a meeting of all sides was rejected as well.”  -  Georgios Makropoulos, FIDE Deputy President.

The newly founded German event agency Universal Event Promotion (UEP) submitted to FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov as well as to the Classical World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik a written offer with a guaranteed fee of US $ 1,000,000 (net) (US $ 500,000 for each of the two players). The match was to be organised from 25 November to 17 December 2006 under the title "World Chess Match of the Champions". There were to be 14 classical games. The offer, which was accepted by Mr Kramnik, has been rejected by Mr Topalov.  The information was given by Stefan Koth (CEO Universal Event Promotion).  press-release

Meanwhile, the USCF continues to be silent on their silence and their secret board meeting about the Chesscafe deal and Fide.  Not all readers have been as silent, and there are indications that there is much more to be known especially about the vendor selection process, if only there were an open forum to discuss it with USCF, which would make the exercise worthwhile rather than merely scandalous.
A Satirical movie is in production “Searching for Bobby Fletcher” or something, but then there are two more serious efforts; the first was originally filmed in 1994, and received big critical acclaim, but was not released. Now A&E will show Ted Danson – and the famed South Bronx chess group to 80 million people in the US. Elsewhere Will Smith is said to be taking the role of a Disney-produced new feature film of an inner city educator who is a chess player.

Some years ago the Parrot was contacted by a descendent of Paul Morphy who thought that standard chess histories were very wrong. This week the Parrot has heard from a descendent of the great Indian player Sultan Khan. Time to get out the interview pad!

In a response from a past W Ch candidate on ‘seeing the position’, is it like a video camera in fast forward? Andras Adorjan replied that he “sees no board and no pieces” and uses a non-visual metaphor of a pianist playing without a score as explanation for what goes on with him in sensing how the game will develop.

Promoting Chess in the USA – here is a report on the most critical group of all – the transitory section of the playing community between “Scholastics and Adult”...

2nd year of Internet College Chess League off to great start, say organizers.  In the A team competitions, Iowa State beat the very solid USC team 3.5-1.5, University of Illinois and Cornell fought for a draw, the former Rocky Mountain League champion, University of Utah, held the University of Washington team to a draw, State University of New York Geneseo beat USC's
3rd team, and the recently re-organized UCLA team beat USC's 2nd team.

In the 2nd and 3rd team competitions, the Cornell 2nd team held University of Illinois 2nd team to a draw, but the Illinois 3rd team won against the 3rd team from Cornell, and the UW 2nd team narrowly beat out Utahs 2nd team.

Meanwhile, the (United States Chess Federation) USCF is CLOSED for business.  Half of the forthcoming board meeting November 5th and 6th is to be held in camera – it is understood that the Chesscafe renewal deal and also Fide leadership questions will be part of the closed-session meetings.  What a public non-profit considers secretive about it s relationship with a private business is very strange in this case, since the Books & Equipment business was open to public tender, the decision on the better bid is not to take place in the public view.  FIDE, on the other hand, represents national chess federations, and on the face of it is not usually required to be as closeted as national security issues at the Pentagon.  What requires discussion on these and other issues to be kept from the public’s attention?

No more news this week on USCF’s deal with Chesscafe.  What is particularly unclear is how a continuation of the contract would be secured, since the current contract is not secured, and especially since the rejected bid from chess4less did offer security as well as a guarantee of $100,000 more per year.

USCF President Bill Goichberg replied that the Parrot’s report last week may or may not be accurate!  Meanwhile USCF current membership numbers go unreported except only about half of USCF players have shown any rating activity within the last 12 months!  On the other hand rival rating entity CXR report new affiliates:  Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (North Carolina); Ebunandini Chess Club (Zimbabwe, Africa); Kailua Chess Group (Hawaii); Hanahau'oli School (Hawaii); the United States Chess League (USA); and the Polgar Chess Center (New York).

This week a petition is being circulated around USCF clubs asking for assurances about drug-testing in the USA. At least one delegate has refused to circulate the petition in his own club, in his own words:

Yes, it is an anti-USCF action designed to destroy USCF's financial foundation.  No decent USCF member should/would ever consider taking such a step.”

FIDE Boss Offers to Buy Lenin’s Body for $1 Million
Reports Mosnews and Interfax.

Head of the FIDE World Chess Federation, and the president of the Russian internal republic of Kalmykia, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, has said he is ready to allocate $1 million for the shipping of the Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin’s body to the Kalmyk capital of Elista.  “I have officially told Russian communist leader Gennady Zyuganov that if the question of burying Lenin’s body is raised, we are ready to allocate $1 million to bring both the mausoleum and body to Elista,” Iliumzhinov was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

What’s Up in Public Newsgroups? Conversational themes this week continue to investigate:

(1)  Blacklisting an author’s books because of criticisms he made in them about USCF’s versus International Rules.  Politicos at USCF continue their silence on the issue of carrying Mr. Eric Schiller’s titles.

(2) The proposed ChessCafe deal with USCF has been made public, which forgives the debt owed USCF and extends the contract to the year 2011, without seeking new bids for USCF’s Books and Equipment business.

He got the lead early – and stayed the distance.  Topalov plays the tournament of his life!  Here is a happy ‘Toppy’ being interviewed by the local press.

Chess News North America

USCF Delegates at the US Open were informed that Chess Café is in deep trouble.  In a deal to provide merchandising services to USCF’s members the Café has been unable to pay up, and is now thought to owe USCF $250,000; an immediate demand for the money would bankrupt it.  A compromise motion to extend the deal to the year 2012 was rejected by USCF’s board.  Chess Café rather controversially have banned books by Evans, Keene and Schiller, some of the best-selling authors in chess.

The FIDE World Chess Championship taking place September 27th - October 16th at Potrero de los Funes, San Luis, Argentina. Players: Rustam Kasimdzhanov, Michael Adams, Peter Leko, Vishy Anand, Veselin Topalov, Alexander Morozevich, Peter Svidler, and Judit Polgar.
