A True Masterpiece

Submitted by kenytiger on Tue, 08/19/2008 at 12:01pm.

Fischer reverts to an opening variation he used to play when he was twelve years old. One wonders why he ever stopped.

This game shows why Bobby has been called "The greatest Champion that ever lived."

Thanks.  I have a habit of missing the obvious.

Why did black move 23... Rad8?

What are some of the reasons black did not move Nxf4?

Its a great attack by ficher but wouldn't 21. f6 be stronger because the only way not be mated is by 21...Nxf6 (or Qxf6 which loses the queen) which leaves ficher a rook up for 2 pawns after 22. exf6, Qxf6 23. Bxa8, Rxa8.

A giant played this game. After 28.Rad1 I counted the activity of pieces. (by the Maróczy teaching). White could move for 42 fields, Black could move for 43 fields. Accordingly this wasn't deciding. But the opening of e5-h8 diagonal (29.f7) suddenly settled the game.
