EUGENIO TORRE
(born Nov-04-1951) Philippines

[what is this?]
Eugenio Torre was born in Iloilo City, the Philippines, on November 4, 1951, and with the possible exception of Mark Paragua, is considered to be the strongest Filipino chess player ever. Awarded the IM title in 1972, Torre quickly ascended the ranks, and has the distinction of being the first Asian to earn the title of International Grandmaster. He accomplished the feat at the age of 22 while he won a silver medal at the 21st World Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France in 1974. Torre has been a veteran of the World Chess Olympiad for three decades and led the Philippine team to a 7th place finish at the 1988 Greece Olympiad. He also has a collection of three Olympiad silver medals.

He beat Anatoli Karpov in Manila in 1976, one of Karpov's few losses during his championship reign. Torre qualified for the Candidates round in 1984 but lost to Zoltan Ribli. It is well-known that he was a friend of Robert James Fischer and he acted as a member of his team during Fischer's 1992 match against Boris Spassky. Torre later conducted radio interviews with Fischer on Bomba Radio of the Philippines.

Dec-20-08   pinoymaster77: wordfunph, Im from Binan near Laguna Technopark.
Dec-20-08   spawn2: hi wordfunph

thank you for the file reader. i am now able to open the files you sent me. Btw, do you have an e-book version of mikhail tal's life and games or any biography of famous players like karpov's or korchnoi? again thank you so much.

by the way, am impressed. although you live in Laguna, you went all the way to Greenhills to check out Fully Book. Thta I can say is the mark of a true chess addict : )

Dec-21-08   wordfunph: spawn2, that's right talagang chess books lang niluwas ko sa Greenhills. Chess has been my passion and forever be my passion. Will look for your request (life and games of famous players) and send it to you as soon as I'm free. pinoymaster77, lapit lang pala natin. Keep on pushing bro.
Dec-21-08   wordfunph: spawn2, already sent you "Mikhail Tal's Life and Games". Korchnoi's Chess is My Life to follow. Enjoy reading..
Dec-22-08   spawn2: wordfunph, maraming salamat sa maagang pamasko. I hope I can return the favor someday. If you are planning to go to Makati just advice me two days ahead and I will make myself available. Lunch is on me : )
Dec-22-08   wordfunph: spawn2, ok bro!
Dec-23-08   pinoymaster77: From the chess news, Tagaytay team bannered by GM Laylo wins the tournament in Mindanao. Surigao del Sur is 2nd bannered by JP Gomez.

Banjo Barcenilla will still pursue his 3rd and final norm preferably in a closed tournament (article by M. Bernardino). Dapat nung yr 2000 pa when he was 28, but his 3rd norm was not confirmed. Now he's still very young at age 36 or 37. We wish him well, its long overdue!

Dec-24-08   pinoymaster77: Kibitzers, Merry Christmas !!
Dec-24-08   pinoymaster77: Is the UAE Team event starting tomorrow or on the 26th? It would be a good holiday treat for chess fans! Though the players have made a big sacrifice.
Dec-24-08   spawn2: Guys,

To those who continue to support GM Torre and the rest of our chess heroes..Merry Christmas!!

Dec-24-08   Karpov2985: Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon sa Lahat! Enjoy!
Dec-25-08   wordfunph: Merry Christmas GM Eugenio Torre! Happy holidays to all!
Dec-25-08   spawn2: Guys,

timhortons: <spawn2> buti pa si joey antonio nakiki chat pa sa icc si grandmaster torre tahimik talaga.
Dec-27-08   cirbals: May i know where's the Blitz Tourney located? where in Cubao, Q.C.? I want to play! Thanks.... :)
Dec-27-08   spawn2: tim,

yun din ang napansin ko. Tried to say hi but no response.

Dec-28-08   pinoymaster77: http://www.philstar.com/article.asp...

Thats the link on the blitz tourney. It was at Prince Gregory Condo at 12th Ave, Cubao.

Anyway for their next tourneys the landlines of Fianchetto Corp is published there 4396921 and 9131737.

Dec-29-08   spawn2: guys,

that was a serious drubbing administered by the mercenary team of UAE vs the Philippines (3.5 - 0.5). But it should not be a surprised. We were "out-ELOed" in all the boards. The exposure the boys are getting will give them the experience to feel how it is to play against super GMs. On the positive side, if am not mistaken So (2610) was able to extract a draw from Karjakin (2730)with the black piece at that. The boy has indeed arrived. If a 2730 player handling the white pieces is willing to draw with Wesley it means they are all aware of the strength of this wonderkid. A warning to GM Torre, if his match with Wesley will push through in February, the odds are definitely against him. He should start practicing not today but yesterday. But to GM Torre fans, I remember NM Bordonada in an interview said that GM Torre is at his deadliest when he is the underdog in a match and he is cetainly the underdog against So.

The team's next assignment is against the IM laden Indian team. Although this team does not have a single GM, they have been performing magnificently in the tournament. I must commend the people behind the Indian Chess. They have trained and developed their players very well. Wesley and the rest of the guys should not underestimate this team.

To NCFP, I hope that to provide equal oppurtunities to all its members, they should send a team composed of the oldies "Torre, Antonio, Villamayor and maybe Gonzalez or Garma to a tournament similar to the one where Wesley and Co are currently playing so that they will have objective comparison who are performing very well, those who are in form etc.

Dec-29-08   pinoymaster77: spawn2 I wrote in the Wesley blog there needs to be continued exposure of our GMs.

We'll need to develop our own core of 4 solid, world class players and this takes time. Probably in 2012, full transition to the young guns could be complete.

By 2010 based on current playing strengths we'll still need some experienced, steady hands like Eugene or Joey even at the lower boards.

Mark doesnt really cut it right now in top heavy competitions, and Darwin is not that solid rock that we'll need for a consistent pointmaker/hitman at
board 4

Dec-29-08   pinoymaster77: Anybody has link or news on Joeys showing in the North American Open?

Dec-29-08   balweg214: North American Open 2008

http://chesstournamentservices.com/...

After Rnd 5 GM Rogelio Antonio Jr w/ 4pts while IM Enrico Sevillano w/ 3 pts.

Dec-29-08   pinoymaster77: Thanks Balweg, pano ba tournament format mukhang 2 to 3 games per day, kung nagumpisa lang nun Dec 27?

Noted there are also other Pinoy players there like IM De Guzman.

Pano kayo kung may matchup ang Tagaytay club team vs 'Fil-Ams' (or Pinoys campaigning in US) composed of
Joey,Barcenilla,Sevillano, de Guzman or Young - ano kaya ang projected result?

Dec-30-08   pinoymaster77: Just to show their projected progress.
In terms of ave ELO of TOP TEN Phils just edging to 2517 from 2513, if the other countries are about the same we will just overtake Switzerland :

Oct 08 Jan 09
1 So, Wesley 2610 2622
2 Torre, Eugenio 2560 2560
3 Paragua, Mark 2526 2531
4 Gomez,John Paul 2519 2532
5 Antonio, Rogelio 2515 2519
6 Laylo, Darwin 2507 2500
7 Nolte, Rolando 2489 2489
8 Sanchez, Joseph 2471 2461
9 Gonzales, Jayson 2468 2470
10 Villamayor,Bong 2468 2457

11 Salvador,Roland 2464 2476
13 Bitoon,Richard 2438 2458
16 Sadorra, Julio 2431 2439

Live ratings per chessphi site for our top players :

Wesley 2562.6 # 101
Eugene 2559.4 341
John Paul 2531.1 511
Mark 2531.1 512
Joey 2519.9 584
Darwin 2509.4 672

These live ratings were before the ongoing UAE tilt. Wesley had a very high RP of 2700+ as shared by a kibitzer but with the 5th rd draw vs RR Laxman I hope it doesnt drop so much.

Also even with Joey's 7 consecutive wins in the US circuit, he's just showing a +4 gain showing the quality of those competitions. He should play more in the high level tournaments like the ongoing North American tilt.
