Sep-08-06   VishyFan: Abhijeet has won the National Juniors and has qualified for the National 'A' to be held in December. Probably that was the reason for him to skip the National 'B'....

notyetagm: I just realized that Gupta won the 2008 World Junior Championship title by winning all 5(!) of his last games. Wow. What a money player, reminiscent of Dr. Lasker's great finishes.

With the title on the line after round 8, Gupta went on a five-game winning streak(!) in rounds 9 thru 13 <(5/5!)> to win the tournament.

He seemed to come out of nowhere. I followed this event closely and wondered where in the world this Gupta guy was coming from. He suffered two losses earlier on but finished with that incredible <5/5> to take the title.

Aug-16-08   yalie: This year's World Juniors was probably a little stronger than in the past with 11 of the top 20 juniors taking part.

Of course, it still doesnt compare to the ones in the 80s, but the competition is nothing to sneer at. And Gupta has been playing very well of late. He won the Parsvnath GM tournament in January and became a GM in the past year.

A few years ago, Abhijeet Gupta gave Nigel Short (who was probably quite a bit stronger than at present) all he could handle.

<Well, I didn’t start very well at all. In the second round I drew with some 15-year-old boy from some very obscure place, some village somewhere. I think his name was Abhijeet Gupta (picture left). He played quite reasonably well, but it was also taking me some time to find my stride.>

On the front page of cg.com, I just quickly mouse over the tags to see the most recent comment.

I was incredibly impressed with Gupta's remarkable 5/5 finish and wanted to see what someone had just written about him, since the Gupta tag was near the top of the list. It just happened to be your response to me!

And after Anand's brilliant Game 3 win today, again I say

chak de india!
Go Anand!

Dec-06-08   ellenliisbet: Looking forward to seeing Gupta at GM-C, expect So or Howell to win the group however.
Dec-06-08   DarthStapler: Another rising Indian star
