WESLEY SO
(born Oct-09-1993) Philippines

[what is this?]
Wesley So is a Filipino chess prodigy who is currently the youngest chess Grandmaster in the world and the 7th youngest GM in history. Wesley So achieved the title at age 14 years, 1 month and 28 days during the 3rd Pichay Cup International Open in Parañaque City, Philippines in December 2007.

So nailed his first GM result in the Offene Internationale Bayerische Schaha Meisterschaft in Bad Wiessee, Germany in November 2006 and his second GM norm in the World Juniors Under-20 Chess Championship in Yerevan, Armenia in September 2007.

GM So has also won the World Under-16 Team Championship Board 1 gold medal with a phenomenal score of 9.5/10. In his home country, he holds the record of having been the youngest member of the national men’s team to the Chess Olympiad (2006 - Turin, Italy) at the age of 12 as well as the country’s youngest National Open Chess Champion and its youngest National Junior Open Chess Champion.

In his young but distinguished career, Wesley has competed in World Youth Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, finishing equal first in his age group in Belfort in 2005 alongside Srinath Narayanan, Sanan Sjugirov, and Samvel Ter Sahakyan. His other achievements include two Gold Medals in the 6th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship, Vung Tau, in Vietnam; three Gold Medals in 7th Asean Age-Group Chess Championship, Pattaya, in Thailand and competing in the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin in 2006.

So won the Dubai Open (2008) in the United Arab Emirates, besting an international field that included 23 other grandmasters.

His July 2008 rating of 2577 ranks him as number 260 in the world (http://www.benoni.de/schach/elo/his...). However, his ELO is marked to increase by 47 to 2624 in FIDE's October list.

Sep-12-08   wordfunph: Congrats to GM Eugenio Torre! He maybe the oldest participant in the 3rd PGMA Cup but he won it with style. He just taught the young guns how he made it as Asia's First Grandmaster! Mabuhay ka GM Torre. Dami nagti text sa akin if you won the Cup, eto tuloy ako ngayon sa net shop hehe! Hope that Pichay and his NCFP gang will re-consider GM Torre for Dresden RP team. Mabuhay ang RP Chess!!! Hep hep HURRAY!!!

zanshin: Maybe it's a sign that Eugene still is not receiving the recognition he deserves because even when we talk about him, we do so on Wesley's page. I am just as guilty of this as anyone ;-)
Sep-12-08   ceedee: <kramrich: great news! how about sadorra, nadera and gomez? did they nail a gm norm> sorry, kramrich, neither of them got a GM norm. Sadorra and Gomez needs to win their final round match in order for them to get their GM result while Nadera even though he won his final round assignment, he could not get his GM norm, because he played against two unrated players in his earlier rounds.

Deniel Causo did get his first IM result though.

Sep-12-08   makunat: Wesley So has played 38 games in four tournaments since early last month, with little rest period.

Should he play nine more in the Pichay Cup after winning once, losing twice and drawing six times in the GMA Cup?

Sep-12-08   Karpov2985: I’m so happy that Torre won the tournament! This is what I have been waiting for. A Filipino finally wins a Philippine open tournament. The Asia’s first GM does not stop to amaze me. His tenacity and consistency that he developed throughout the years has become so expected of him to the point that some people are no longer appreciative of what he does and what he did for the country. Until now, the officers of NCFP ignored his previous accomplishments and still wanted him to prove himself by joining long tournament just to get in. What a shame! This is a big slap on their faces! Wesley So has the potential of following the footsteps of Torre but he is still a long long way to go. People are so enamored by his recent successes that they ignored Torre. We need Torre to mentor our young chess players, especially Wesley, but we do not need to force him into retirement by disrespecting him. In my opinion, he was disrespected when instead of seeding him into Dresden Olympiad, they force him into joining the long tournament like everybody else just to get in. Of course, he opted not to join, a normal reaction from a slighted person. People in this list vilified me for trying to prove my point before. But Torre’s winning the tournament proved me right that he is still a power to reckon with even with his advancing age. We are charmed by recent Wesley’s accomplishments but he should still need more some seasoning before he plays those big guys in chess. That is why Torre should have been seeded for Dresden Olympiad and be assigned board 1. But of course that is water under the bridge now not until a member will give his seat as a gesture of respect for Eugene. Just like what Tim Hardaway did during one of the All Star game in the 90s. He gave his first five slot to Magic Johnson and the people cheered for him to have done that. It was a remarkable gesture that every time there is a similar situation, the TV commentators always remember him for it.
Sep-12-08   maelith: Nope Wesley is the board 1 player, he is the highest rated player in rp. He Has won a tournament a few months ago here in RP ahead of Eugene. Wesley's overall result in the last few years is better than Eugene, Wesley should be the board one player, he deserve it.

Anyway congrats to Eugene

Sep-12-08   wordfunph: I agree with Karpov2985 and sorry to disagree with maelith. Being the highest rated player in the country should not be the only gauge in determining for table #1. Wes is too inexperienced to man the jungle of board #1, he will be eaten alive by other board 1 GMs. Everybody knew that EXPERIENCE is unquantifiable. If we could only quantify GM Torre's experience and add it to his 2524 ELO rating right now, then it would zoom to a realistic 2600+ elo.
Sep-12-08   roy sam de leon: Congratulations to Torre. You made us Pinoys once again proud. Congratulations also to other Pinoy Players.

With this result, our image-in-chess has improved. The tourney has given way for our players to enhance their skills. There are now lot of potential Filipino Players who are capable of winning against an opponent especially from other countries.

Torre is a solid player. Wes is a genious considering his age. Wes seems to perform very well when playing abroad. Wes is very popular. Imagine...posting our comments on other players in the page of Wes.

Congrats also to the organizers of the tourneys in our country. In one way or another, you are making our players better.

Sep-12-08   maelith: @wordpunch, like I told players like carlsen, karjakin, mamedyarov have played in board 1 before in their younger years. I think Wesley is ready for board 1. Glen also said that. Wesley have won tournaments ahead of experienced fields which include Joey and Eugene. Wesley deserves to be the board 1 player. In the Vietnam tournament, Wesley have drawn with a former 2700 player. Wesley deserves to be the board 1 player.

Still it will be fruitless to discuss these thing, cause i think the players who will play in the olympiad are already set. Maliban na lang kung may give way.

Sep-12-08   wowowee: Btw I would like to congratulate GM Torre. It was a nice performance. Kung ganyan ba naman ipapakita mong performance most of the time I'll make an appeal to include you in the RP team without going through a qualifying tournament.
Sep-12-08   maelith: If EXPERIENCE is unquantifiable. Then Symslov and korchnoi should play as the board 1 player for their counties right? Ahead of players who have performed better than them in recent years?

So I think unfair nman iyon kay Wesley kung hindi sya ang magboard 1 player. Eugene have man the board 1 player a lot of time(he deserves it). But it's about time that a deserving player like Wesley plays for board #1.

Sep-12-08   maelith: Pero again congrats to Eugene for winning the tournament.
Sep-12-08   renecon: I agree. It's fruitless to discuss these things. It's done deal. The line up who will go to Dresden has been set. If one of them will give up for any reason, the next one to go must be Paragua and not Torre because he is the next one in line. Those Torre fans should wait for the next Olympic after Dresden, If NCFP changes the rule then so be it kahit ba seeding and process. To change the rule in the middle of controversy is insane. Its like changing the constitution to suit those in power.
Sep-12-08   renecon: Congratulation to Eugene. You are my idol too. But we have to respect and abide by the rule.
Kung meron na then I stand corrected. I want Wesley to follow what Eugene has achieved and the only way to do that is to think of the long haul. Wesley need to prepare for that and not rush into it. He is still young and he needs to learn more in order to consistently perform in every tournament he participate in. Just as trivial as pacing of tournaments. Some are even suggesting Wesley to take a rest than joining the Pichay tournament. He also needs to develop more opening repertoire as mentioned by some of us here. Wesley has still a lot to learn and to prepare to join the ranks of great chess players in the world.

Sep-13-08   wordfunph: Amen to Karpov2985. I just wish that what happened to GM Paragua in Turin Olympiad won't happen to GM So. Good luck to GM Wesley "Gentle Mauler" So, we wish you all the best!
Sep-13-08   wordfunph: To Maelith, by the way bro, GM Korchnoi played as board #1 for Switzerland in 2006 Turin Chess Olympiad. Check your data before posting. Peace bro hehe! Torre for board #1 pa rin ako..
Sep-13-08   pinoymaster77: Kibitzers and chess enthusiasts, all these are still healthy for the sport. Mas makatulong ikuwento sa mga kaibigan at komunidad at ikuwento pano makipaglaban ang ating chess heroes... like Eugene marching down his king to the opponents side and still hammering out a win in that game vs Li Chao.

More interest in the sport means more supporters, more activities, and more sponsors. This will just add spice to the Torre-So series next year, perhaps more sponsors could chip in to the prize money.

More sponsors means more laptops and support could be granted to aspiring masters, more overseas tournaments - aside from the current NCFP & its circles.

I still don't see Smart/PLDT (Globe already sponsors), San Miguel group and the pharma/medicines coming in as major sponsors. Like if So was in the
Promil commercials years ago, they should still focus on this for the next younger generation.

And sa ating young ones, importanteng value ang respeto. Sadly, its sorely lacking in today's generation.

Sep-13-08   wordfunph: For our info, GM Mark Paragua with 2617 ELO when he competed in 2006 Turin Chess Olympiad. He scored an unimpressive 4.5/11 in board 1. I simply don't want GM So to be annihilated by big sharks in board 1. History may probably repeat itself in 2008 Dresden Olympiad, I just wish GM So can hold his own ground. By the way in that event, Mark was demolished by GM Rozentalis (2596), GM Bu Xiangzhi (2640), GM Nisipeanu (2695), and GM Korchnoi (2611). However, Mark won over GM Stefansson (2579) and IM Mas (2412). I hope that GM So is ripe and ready for the event of his life. Let's pray for him.
Sep-13-08   maelith: Ah korchnoi play for the Switzerland in 2006 pala, I guess he is still the clear consistent player back in 2006. but unlike in rp things are more different. Wesley is the most consistent player, and the highest rated player in rp.If Eugene is the most consistent player in the last few years,I will favor him to play in board 1, pero hindi eh.

Wesley and Paragua are different players with different personality. If other younger players have played for board 1 before, I can't see any reason on why Wesley should not be the board 1 player.

Sep-13-08   maelith: Pero sana next time, we have a better system of choosing our representative in the olympiad. It will be better if ang pagbabasehan na lng ng pagpili eh ung naging performance mo maybe in the last 2 years. Or maybe why not have a 3 tournaments, at kung sino ang may pinakamaraming points iyon ang pasok. The point is there should be a better system in choosing the players for the olympiad. Ang mga sinasabi ko ay suggestions lang, it's still up to the officials to decide.

Pero nandito na ito, we should support all the players in the upcoming olympiad. Good luck to the players. I believe that these players can perform well in the upcoming olympiad.

Sep-13-08   maelith: @Pinoymaster, yeah I hope magkaroon ng malaking sponsor ang Wesley vs Eugene match. It will help promote chess in the Philippines. Just for fun and to spice things up and also to hype the match. Sino tingin nyo mananalo?Ala bang magpupustahan dyan? Hehehe. This is just for the sake of gamesmanship.
