The
executive and members of the Barbados Chess Federation and
the local sporting community would like to express our
sympathy and deepest condolences to the Dawson family on the
passing of their dad, Mr. Kenneth Dawson.
Mr. Kenneth Dawson made a great contribution to chess in
producing two Barbados National Champions, his sons Peter
and David Dawson. Peter Dawson also served on the BCF
executive on several occasions, managed several junior and
senior national chess teams and most recently served as
President of the BCF. His granddaughters Shanice and Shantel
Dawson are also keen chess players.
The funeral service will take place on Saturday at 10:00 am
at the Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church and the interment
at Westbury Cemetery.
May we find
comfort in Jesus words “I am the resurrection and the life.”

World Chess Olympiad departed from Grantley Adams
Airport today on British Airways for Dresden, Germany.
Based on teams registered, Dresden will not only be a reform
Olympiad, due to the many new regulations introduced, but
also a record-breaking Olympiad, beating Turin 2006 with 154
teams in the Men's Section and 116 teams in the Women’s
section. Barbados will be fielding a full contingent
of both Men's and Women's Teams for only the third time
since its debut on the world stage in 1986 at Dubai and has
drawn considerably on its up-and-coming junior players,
which comprise 50% of the team membership. Also
accompanying the Barbados Contingent is International
Arbiter Rohan Waithe who is one of only ten Arbiters drawn
from the Americas Continent to officiate as a Match Arbiter
at Dresden.

HEROES DAY CUP
Celebrating our Heroes in Chess
Bridgetown, Barbados
April 26th - May 1st, 2008
Robert Chase, Marketing
Manager of Digicel sponsors for the Heroes Day Cup Masters
Section making the Ceremonial 1st Move for
Digicel RBTT Heroes Day Cup opening match between
Grandmasters Keith Arkel, England, and Julio Becerra, USA.
Grandmaster Julio Becerra of the
USA brought the curtains down on the 2008 Digicel RBTT
Heroes Day Cup with a commanding performance, "washing off"
Barbados National Champion FIDE Master Delisle Warner and
Swedish FIDE Master Bengt Hammar, to finish unbeaten on 8.5
points and take the 2008 Digicel Masters Cup. Becerra,
who is originally from Cuba, was clearly in a class of his
own and his display over the last week will certainly
provide much material for local coaches to use with their
charges.
Second in the Digicel Masters
goes to English Grandmaster Keith Arkell who ended on 7.5
points. Arkell, from whose table most of the tournament's
hardest and longest fought matches originated, ended his
Heroes Day Cup with wins against two of Barbados' finest
FIDE Master Dr. Philip Corbin and National Champion Delisle
Warner.
