The six competitors in this year's Category 21 version of the traditional supertournament are Garry Kasparov, Alexei Shirov, Vladimir Kramnik, Vishy Anand, Peter Leko, and Alexander Khalifman (who replaces Alexander Morozevich).

    Linares will be the first time Kasparov faces Khalifman since the latter won the FIDE title last summer. Khalifman is easily the lowest-rated player and could struggle to avoid residing in the cellar throughout the double round-robin event. The others will audition for the role of Kasparov's successor.

    Flash! March 10: Kramnik and Kasparov are declared co-champions. Kasparov cedes the trophy to Kramnik. Kramnik and Leko draw. Anand's Petroff is enough for the draw with Kasparov. Khalifman and Shirov agree to a short draw.

    March 9: Anand springs to life with an exciting win over Khalifman's French. Kasparov and Leko draw a Sicilian Najdorf. Shirov and Kramnik dance to a draw in a Sicilian Pelikan.

    8 March: Khalifman breaks through Leko's Grunfeld for his first victory! Kasparov finds a perpetual check to save the draw with Kramnik. Shirov and Anand agree to a short draw, as Anand is one day closer to getting out of town.

    7 March: Shirov escapes with a perpetual check against Leko. FIDE Champ Khalifman proves his skill with another draw against Kasparov. Anand wins the exchange but agrees to a draw with Kramnik.

    5 March: A pawn down in the endgame, Khalifman ties up Kramnik. Shirov's perpetual attack on Kasparov's queen is enough for the draw. Anand and Leko split the point.

    4 March: Khalifman and Anand agree to a draw. Leko manages a draw with Kasparov. Kramnik ekes out an endgame win over Shirov.

    3 March: Shirov and Khalifman take a short draw. Kasparov beats Anand with black. Leko and Kramnik share the point.

    1 March: Shirov burns Anand. Kasparov and Kramnik settle for a draw. Leko and Khalifman split the point.

    29 February: Kasparov and Kramnik maintain lead.

    28 February: Kasparov and Kramnik take the lead.
