LAST UPDATED:  April 10,, 2003

From 1999 until the end of 2002, Dutton Chess ran professionally organized, monthly CFC-rated Toronto Chess Tournaments.  We offered large class prizes, demonstration boards, prompt computer pairings in air-conditioned facilities.  The Dutton Chess Club on Bayview, at one time had almost 200 Members in the year 2000.  Continued declining tournament attendance, coupled with a dramatic drop in the Club membership to less that 70 Members, resulted in the PERMANENT CLOSING OF THE DUTTON CHESS CLUB ON BAYVIEW after the 32nd Active Chess Tournament on December 21st, 2002.

HALLOWE'EN BLITZ MARATHON
AT DUTTON CHESS CLUB - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30th, 1999

The Dutton Chess Club played host to a "Hallowe'en Blitz Marathon" which saw a total of 28 rounds of Blitz Chess take place on Saturday afternoon (Hallowe'en "eve").  Fourteen players entered the first blitz while eight entered the second blitz (a 7-double round - "round-robin").  Half a dozen players endured both events (a total of 14 double rounds of 5 minute Blitz Chess).  When the serious "clock pounding" had ended Florante Alcaide of Pickering emerged with clear first place in the first event, while DCC's "newest" member Zivomir Masic finished in second place in both events.  Top score was recorded by York University professor Ian Martin who lost only once while running up a 12.5 out of 14 score.  Complete crosstables are included at the bottom of this report.  For those not familiar with double round scoring the "$" sign indicates a 2-0 results, while a "&" indicates a score of 1.5-.5, while "W" is a 1-1 result and a "D" is a .5-1.5 result.

The Dutton Chess Club features a 5-Minute Blitz Tournament every Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. and again at 4:00 p.m. at 1681 Bayview Avenue - 2nd Floor, above the Chess'nMath Shop.  The Duttons provide all new clocks and equipment and a nominal $10 entry fee is charged with 70% returned to the prize fund for the two 7-double round (14 games) Swiss system Blitz tournaments.

This popular format usually takes about two and half hours to complete and the players are typically wanting to enter a second tournament by about 4 p.m.  Dutton Chess Club, now in its fourth month on Bayview, will continue to offer Blitz chess with an expanded calendar to include TWO Blitz Tournaments on Saturday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and eventually will bring back Friday Night Blitz to Toronto in the new year!  For those who enjoy speed chess but not too fast, you can check out the popular 15 Minute Monday Night Swiss tournaments held at the club every Monday night.  All of these events are economically priced at $10. entry fee for everyone with 70% returned to the prize fund.  No Visitor Fees are charged for these events until the new year, however most players have decided to purchase membership, which has now grown to nearly 60 members.  The cost for membership is very reasonably priced at $99. per year for adults and only $69. for juniors (special price until December 31st, 1999) and includes 40/2 slow chess twice per week and plans to be open 4 days per week:  Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.  The Dutton Chess Club will host the 2000 Toronto Closed in February as well as the 2000 Toronto Blitz Championship.  Further information is available on the CFC website at  http://chess.ca or on the newly updated Dutton Chess website  http://www.play.at/duttonchess
