Bali Hotel International in Benidorm

Winner Judit Polgar. Photo Pascal Villalba (Notzai)
This was a new tournament which took place in Benidorm, Spain. Based on the idea of the New York Open with amateurs and stars playing together in the same venue and is organised by Alfonso Pedraza. The Festival ran November 22nd-December 1st 2002 there are almost 300 participants from 17 countries. The event finished with a "Stars Tournament" (November 29th-December 1st 2002). That saw a 12 players round robin 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Leontxo Garcia reports "Two blitz games (3’ plus 2 seconds), the first one was a draw, Judit won the second one in a very brilliant style, giving up two pawns for a very strong attack. “I just trusted my intuition, and it worked very well”, said Polgar after her victory, one of the most brilliant in her career. Karjakin, 12, lost in the last round to San Segundo when he was fighting for the first prize, after four wins and six draws in ten rounds. It looked like the tension was too big for the prodigy child. However, his performance here has been very impressive. "

Open Letter on Drugs Testing

Alexander Baburin and Jon Speelman have written an open letter on the contentious issue of drugs testing to FIDE. Signatures are being added all the time. At the moment my view is that there is no objective reason for drugs testing in chess but that there may be a case that the funds nations outside of the UK and US may be benefitting from chess's status as a sport with finance in some countries but that would be the only justification. It isn't a case that FIDE has even made.

If you want my tip for the most sure fire way of improving your performance at chess by non-chess means then I can exclusively reveal that a good general physical fitness regime with no drugs (eg alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine etc) is the best.

Alexei Shirov has released an open letter addressed to GMs on the proposals for the new structure of the FIDE World Championships.

There are a lot of details available on the proposals at: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=604 and I have also tried to summarise them in the latest TWIC (TWIC420 of November 25th 2002) You can also read further details about the elite GM vote about timecontrols at: http://chess-sector.odessa.ua/gmtime.htm.

More seriously the whole list may be affected by the fact that no games played in France during the summer were rated even through the results were submitted.

Games in PGN Corrections to a number of games are needed. These include Ivanchuk-Kasparov (1) needs confirmation of the new version which may still not be complete, Radjabov - Karpov (2) looks more plausible but the final Radjabov move looks suspicious unless he won on time.

Round 1 World leads 6-4, Ivanchuk beats Kasparov. Round 2 World wins 5.5-4.5 to lead 11.5-8.5. Round 3 Russia win 5.5-4.5 and now trail 14-16. Round 4 Russia edge another 5.5-4.5. Kasparov wins his first game against his usual customer Shirov. Russia now trail only by one game 19.5-20.5. Round 5 saw eight of ten games decisive yet the honours were shared 5-5 leaving the score at 24.5-25.5 to the ROW. The huge shock was Judit Polgar's first ever win against Garry Kasparov which sent him down to below 50%. Round 6 another 5-5 draw leaving the score Russia 29.5 - ROW 30.5. Judit Polgar was a pawn up with black ahgainst Vladimir Kramnik but this wasn't quite enought to win. Kasparov was a pawn down against short when they agreed a draw in the end. Wins for Gelfand and Shirov for ROW were matched by Russian wins for Bareev and Morozevich. Round 7 Vladimir Kramnik lost with white against Ilya Smirin to go to -1 for the event. Garry Kasparov had a torrid time against Teimour Radjabov before drawing a tricky position. Russia tied the round 5-5 with Dreev beating Polgar matching Smirin's win there were 8 draws. Score Russia 34.5 - ROW 35.5. Round 8: The end of day 3 sees the Rest of the World 3 points clear with 2 rounds to go. The most astonishing thing has been the form of the top two players in the World. Vladimir Kramnik lost for the second time in the event to go to a -1 score in round 7 and didn't play round 8. Garry Kasparov also struggled in round 7 just surviving against 15 year old Teimour Radjabov and then went on to lose dreadfully in round 8 to Vladimir Akopian in only 25 moves. He is now on a -2 score. In round 8 Boris Gelfand was the other winner for the ROW there were 8 draws. Round 9 saw the Rest of the World win again 5.5-4.5 to give them a lead of 47-43 with one round to go, the Russians will have to win 7-3 to draw the match. Kasparov played Ponomariov and after a dubious sacrifice by the Ukrainian had the upper hand but his confidence seems to have taken a battering over the last few days and he steered the game to a draw. Anatoly Karpov beat Nigel Short in an ending that looked drawish but Leko beat Morozevich and Shirov's 4 pawns proved too much for Grischuk's rook in the game of the round. Round 10 was drawn 5-5. Games and results now available. Fantastic wins for Radjabov and Shirov helped the Rest of the World to a win in the match. Kasparov looked better against Anand but agreed a draw when short of time to finish on -2 for the event. Kramnik finished on -1 after drawing with Ponomariov. Karpov scored a somewhat fortunate win against Short and Dreev won against Smirin with black. The Russians started strong favourites with an average rating of 2708 (2717 over the top ten boards) as opposed to 2695 (2699 top 10) but whereas Kasparov and Kramnik would normally between then be expected to deliver at least +5 (a pretty conservative figure) they in fact managed only -3 which on its own delivers the entire winning margin. Shirov's huge 7/10 (including his customary loss to Kasparov) and solid 6/10s from Gelfand, Ivanchuk and Ponomariov (1 loss by Gelfand between the three) were big parts of the victory as was the 5/10 scored by the lowest rated player in the event Teimour Radjabov. Perhaps Kasparov was right that the chances were balanced at the start of the match even though the World were without Adams and Topalov.

Game of the Day Prizes: Day 1 V. Ivanchuk for the game against G. Kasparov Day 2 G. Kasparov for the game against A. Shirov Day 3 A. Shirov for the game against A. Motylev Day 4 A. Shirov for the game against A. Grischuk

US Team to Challenge Drug Regulations at the Olympiad

Daily Telegraph Chess Correspondent Malcolm Pein reports: A crisis is looming at the forthcoming Chess Olympiad which starts on October 25th at the Slovenian resort of Bled. Fide intends to test for more than hundred substances and demand written consent from all the players. A huge body of opinion amongst the ranks of chess professionals is against this including players from the Netherlands and the USA. Some American GMs intend to refuse to be tested and the Executive Director of the United States Chess Federation, Frank Niro, is going to support them. Mr Niro has a unique perspective. A former athlete, he was the youngest ever American to run a Marathon in under 3hrs, a feat he achieved in October 1966 aged 18 years and one month. Speaking from the USCF's headquarters in New York State, Mr Niro said: " I will advise my players to refuse to be tested if they so wish", "it is up to the individual".

This follows the news that the IOC intend to generally reduce the size of the Olympic games as they consider it unwieldy at the moment and have rejected the idea that games such as chess and bridge (an American bridge player was denied a medal at the World Bridge Championships in Montreal because she was on medication for a bad back a move which was not received well in the bridge world) have a place there at all. Events that have had recent hopes of being included but now have been definitively rejected include: ballroom dancing, surfing, bowling, billiards, squash, water skiing and racquetball but also traditional events such as the Modern Pentathlon and even various showjumping events when have been part of the games for many years look set to be excluded.

Additionally Mr Steve Doyle an American serving on Fide's Policy Board will be asked to raise the issue at the Fide meetings to be held during the Russia v Rest of the World Match in Moscow next week with a view to having testing scrapped.

Shirov on the FIDE Grand Prix in Dubai

Alexei Shirov writes to tell his story about the reduction of the prize fund in the FIDE Grand Prix in Dubai. Here is his letter

Shirov Letter on Dubai Grand Prix

Octagon have replied to one point made in the letter:

"Octagon were not and are not responsible for the prize funds at FIDE Grand Prix events. The reason for the reduction in the UAE Grand Prix prize fund was the last minute withdrawal of support from a private investor with whom FIDE Commerce had been negotiating.

Octagon continue to work alongside FIDE and FIDE Commerce to build on the success of this first Grand Prix in Dubai."

Yasser Seirawan Proposals and Bessel Kok Press Release

Yasser Seirawan has produced a series of proposals to heal the split in the chess world by creating a new classical World Championship cycle while also recognizing World Champions for rapid/Knockout and blitz. His proposal would also create a new office of Chess Commissioners who would administer the new classical cycle.

He is trying to set up a meeting possibly in Prague in May involving leading players, FIDE and the Einstein Group PLC. Amongst other things he is calling for a letter writing campaign to FIDE's Emmanuel Omuku at fide@fide.ch urging FIDE to compromise at the negotiating table.

Whilst he faces formidable problems (Do FIDE or the Einstein Group even want to contemplate change? Are they even contractually able to? Can the disparate views of the leading players be reconciled) and I'm not convinced by a number of details of his proposals, a meeting especially amongst the players would be great. Indeed it is long overdue.

FIDE World Chess Championships

The new FIDE World Chess Champion is Ruslan Ponomariov. He beat Vassily Ivanchuk 4.5-2.5 in their eight game match in Moscow. The match saw a crushing win for Ponomariov in game one, near equalisation for Ivanchuk in game two and a painful reverse for Ivanchuk in game 5 where he lost a won position. The 18 year old is the youngest winner of the FIDE World Chess Championships Title (although Chiburdanidze was a younger women's champion). He secured it with a 22 move draw in game seven a game he was probably winning but quite rightly took just the result he needed. (See Ponomariov's site for career achievements so far)
