My 61 Memorable Games?

Before being pulled Ebay had a new edition of My 60 Memorable games which is said to be sourced from Bobby Fischer. It is reported it may contain 12 pages of new text from Fischer (which I'm sure will be just great if you like his radio broadcasts) and an additional annotation of game one from Fischer-Spassky II (bulking it up to 100 games with post-1967 games and especially the 1972 match might be worth buying). Its reported Fischer can't touch his fortune at the moment because his original swiss bank wanted to transfer the money to another bank to be rid of his custom. Fischer of course won't have it. Its impossible to feel sorry for a millionaire who would rather be short of money than do this. Also one additional game is hardly anything to write home about. Of course this could also be a scam or the subject of a dispute, its hard to know, or indeed care anymore. My advice don't touch this stuff with a long barge pole.

The 11th edition of the Essent Chess Tournament took place 12th-20th October 2007. The location is the city of Hoogeveen. Just like last year there are several competitions: a Crown Group, a strong Essent Open, an Amateur Tournament and an event for youth. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won the event with 4.5/6 half a point clear of Loek van Wely who beat 3rd placed Ruslan Ponomariov all three gained rating points because unfortunately bottom rated Zaven Andriasian was completely overfaced by the field and didn't score. Eltaj Safarli won the Open tournament.

His last event was the Lidums Checkmate Open which he won by defeating IM Andras Toth in the final round. He didn't want to retire and is in reasonable health but multiple doctors told him that due to the stress of playing and its affect on blood pressure if he didn't give up chess immediately and permanently, he would be on a dialysis machine within a few years.

New FIDE World Championship cycle announced

FIDE have announced their new cycle http://www.fide.com/news/download/NewWorldChampCycle.pdf. The format will be a mixed one.

The World Championship itself will be settled by matches after the tournament in Mexico City. In 2008 Vladimir Kramnik will play the winner of Mexico City unless he wins the event himself. Veselin Topalov as the loser of the last match in Elista will play the winner of the World Cup in Khanty Mansiysk which takes place at the end of the year. The winners of those matches will play for the title in 2009. However if Kramnik wins the WCCh tournament in Mexico City 2007, a match between Kramnik and Topalov, the current and the previous world champions, will take place in 2008. In that case, the winner of the Kramnik- Topalov match will play against the winner of the 2007 World Cup.

After that qualification for a world title shot will come from one of two methods. Firstly there will be another World Cup in Khanty Mansiysk in 2009. The winner of that will play the winner of a newly established Grand Prix three events per year (different continents) taking place over the years 2008-9. The winners of the Grand Prix and the World Cup will meet in a match and the winner of that will challenge the world champion in 2010 and on it goes with another match in 2012.

It looks terribly complicated to me but with the World Cups already guaranteed in Khanty Mansiysk for the next two cycles the problem of finding sponsorship for this event is solved. The details of the Grand Prix, who gets invited, scoring and which events are involved is obviously pretty key. We'll have to see how this all works out in practice.

FIDE Rating List. January 2007

The new January 2007 FIDE Rating list has been released. The World Championship match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov didn't change the order of the top three but Topalov lost 30 rating points from the match and the Essent tournament that followed it. Anand was inactive and Kramnik gained 16 points. A poor period for Peter Svidler cost him 22 rating points and a drop to 12th in the world, making the reverse journey from 12th to 4th was Shakhriyaz Mamedyarov. Judit Polgar gained 17 rating points and Ruslan Ponomariov 20 but otherwise changes were confined to single figures in the top 20.
