On November 7, 1872 the Mary Celeste left New York with 1700 barrels of raw American alcohol bound for Genoa. The captain, his family and crew were never seen again.


On May 10th in 1869 the first transcontinental railroad was completed by the driving of a symbolic golden spike at Promontory Summit in The Utah Territory.  Today, Promontory Summit is a National Historic Site.
