Chess Expedition 2007

CHESS IN THE OLYMPICS

We are happy to announce the commencement of a new campaign to get Chess into the Summer Olympic Games by 2012. We will put pressure on the Federation Internationale Des Echecs ( F.I.D.E ). We aim to attract other Countries to work with us to achieve our aim. Chess is recognised as a sport in most Countries around the world. After football chess's international federation (F.I.D.E.) has more member Countries than any other sport. Chess has gained recognition by the International Olympic Committee as a Sport. We just have to put a few things in place and soon we could be part of the Olympics proper. Children around the world learning and playing Chess, could one day soon be competing for Gold Medals and representing their country on the biggest world stage of all.

London is hoping to host the games in 2012 and we would dearly love to have chess in these Olympics.

Remember Garry Kasparov's first match against the IBM super computer Deep Blue that match had more than 59 million hits, that's more than the official Atlanta Olympic '96 website the entire time it was operational. This shows the phenomenal power of chess players and the link to computers. Chess players have always been considered brainy so lets pull all of our brain power together an get something done. Chess players from around the world must work together and with their respective federations to make this happen. Check out the London 2012 Olympic bid website. Ask them if they support chess. If you as a chess player support London perhaps London can help us with our goal. Today more than 285 million people play chess with other chess players from all over the world, via the internet. It is estimated 605 million people worldwide know how to play chess. Of these 7.5 million are registered players, covering 160 countries worldwide. Making chess one of the most popular sports around the world.
In the 1970's after the the American Bobby Fischer played his Soviet counterpart, Boris Spassky. Their famous chess match being televised throughout the world, a study was commissioned by the Temple university. Leroy Dubek a physics professor at Temple was one of the team involved. He found tremendous stress on chess players, with blood pressure, breathing and heart rates increasing to a rate comparable to a professional footballer, during a soccer match. During a 5 hour chess match a chess player could lose more in bodyweight than a boxer over a twelve round fight. Please come back to us soon, as we will be regularly posting up new information as the campaign develops. The biggest news to date is chess's International Federation (F.I.D.E.) is now recognised by the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.). Chess will be in the Olympics one day soon, perhaps the first sport to be played by athletes of both the Olympics and Paralympics on an equal basis, that would be historical, remember chess has no physical boundaries even at the highest competitive level. Remember what one of the greatest world champions of our sport, Garry Kasparov said when he was the first person to sign our petition. He made it clear that his mission is to "take chess out of the ghetto where it has languished far too long - and where mere games of chance belong".
