Ostos
Takes Digicel RBTT Heroes Day Masters Cup
A surprise last round draw by
FIDE Master Nelson Alvarado of the Dominican Republic over
English International Master Robert Bellin signed, sealed
and delivered the 2007 Digicel Heroes Day Masters Cup to
Venezuelan International Master Julio Ostos.
Ostos, who had earlier taken an
quick draw against the 2006 Digicel RBTT Heroes Cup winner,
International Master Augusto Moran of Ecuador, ended on 6 ½
points, a score which guaranteed that he could not be over
taken.
The Venezuelan Master then had
to patiently wait on the outcome of the Bellin Alvarado
match which, if Alvarado could avoid losing, would denying
Bellin the opportunity to tie with him. As fate would have
it Alvarado drew, leaving Bellin on 6 points and 2nd
position.
National Champion Terry Farley
stumbled at the finish line, losing a tense hard fought
battle against FIDE Master Warren Elliott of Jamaica thus
allowing Moran, who is sponsored by Western Union to finish
3rd with 5 ½ points. Farley ended with 5
points, sharing 4th spot with FIDE Master Delisle
Warner who pulled off a last round win against compatriot
FIDE Master Dr. Philip Corbin.
The Jamaican trio of FIDE Master
Warren Elliot, Shane Matthews and Jomo Pitterson finished 6th,
7th and 8th respectively on 4 ½, 4 and
3 ½ points. Dr. Philip Corbin, with 3 points, came 9th
and FIDE Master Nelson Alvarado took the cellar position
with 2 points. Report...
