Rose campion. This perennial likes it sunny and dry, and isn't fussy about soil. It has bright violet flowers all summer and fall. Reseeds itself readily so in the spring you either have to weed out all the baby plants or let a few grow and give them away.

This landscape Dream rose puts out tons of flowers and is very easy to grow. Disease resistant, about all you have to do is trim it back when it gets too big (this one is about 6 feet in diameter). The flower clusters are on very short stems so they aren't useful for cutting and bringing inside.

Dragon's blood sedum. Wants full sun; flowers in early summer.

Hosta Francis Williams. Needs it fairly shady since the sun will burn the blue-green leaves.

Maltese Cross (Lychnis). Sunny perennial with clusters made up of tiny cross shaped flowers.

A true pink hydrangea that keeps its color in any type of soil.

Evening primrose (Oenothera). This plant spreads, especially in moist soil, and flowers in early summer. Other than the flower stalks the plant is a low grower and makes a thick groundcover.

Purple smokebush (Cotinus coggygria). A small tree (or large shrub) with smoke-like flower clusters in summer.

This was taken during the 17 year cicada Brood X emergence in 2004. This small hosta was apparently a favorite launching pad.
