This means that we have more time to make calls. Please take a few minutes to carefully read this alert and then call Senator Jeffords. From the HSLDA@Capitol Hill E-lert Service... July 26, 2001 The original message I sent is reprinted below. Here are a few reasons why we don't want the bill to pass. They will help you when you call your Senator. After three years of drafting and lobbying for amendments to the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (H.R. 1 and S. 1), Home School Legal Defense Association has successfully attached several key amendments to protect home schooling (see below). However, two critical issues remain unresolved: 1) The police will have a very hard time knowing which schools are in or out of session on any particular day. Public and private schools have very different schedules at times. Also the daily schedules are different for many schools (time of starting and time of ending, etc.) 2) Students who are habitual truants will probably lie and get around the police's questioning. We don't want problem kids claiming to be homeschoolers just to avoid being picked up. 3) Primary argument - if a child is not in school, Tennessee law holds the parents responsible. 4) The school systems should be the ones responsible for keeping up with their absent students - not the police. School officials should be contacting the parents and working out their own plans for keeping up with truants, without the use of law enforcement picking up children. 5) Police don't have adequate time to deal with real lawbreakers. They should hot have to spend their time stopping kids because they happen to look like students and might be truant. Please continue to urge folks to make calls.
