In Web jargon, this term refers basically to a webmaster who has gotten one or more sponsors (merchants) for his/her web site. For a more elaborate explanation, click here.
Domain
If you have a domain, you have purchased it and host it somewhere (whether with a free web host provider or one which you pay). Your URL will look like:
"http://www.name-that-you-purchased.com". HomePage MadeEasy !! has its own domain--thus, our address being "http://www.homepagemadeeasy.com".
If you do not own a domain, then you have simply gotten free space for you web page somewhere. In this case, your URL will look like: "http://name-that-you-chose.page-host-domain.com", or "http://www.page-host-domain.com/name-that-you-chose", or "http://www.page-host-domain.com/~name-that-you-chose". None of the following URLs represent self-owned domains: those at Geocities, AOL, WebProvider (and so many other Web Sites that offer free and/or paid space for web pages).
Hit
In Web jargon, a hit is a word commonly used in a statistical context.
Regarding Your Home Page, a hit means a visitor.
By the same token, expressions such as to get more hits should be understood as to increase traffic, or the flow of visitors coming to a Web Site.
A hit can also refer merely to a click, in promotional or advertising contexts. For example, a click on a button or banner will often be referred to as a hit.
At any rate hits are clicks on buttons or visitors that one is either interested in counting, or referring to from within a statistical frame of reference.
HitCounter
This is an automatic numbering (counting) system which present in most Web Sites, and which increases by a number at every new hit that whatever the Web Site at stake enjoys. A Hitcounter will thus tell how popular a Web Site is; in other words, how many visitors have been to that Web Site.
Spider
To spider means that a Search Engine's "robot" collects data from a Web Site and places this data in the Search Engine's database.
Likewise, when you sign up for a Local Search Service, the Web Site providing this service will send their spider over, in order to collect data from Your Web Site. Usually, this is automatically done on a regular basis, once the service starts.
