• The most visible symbol of the Rastafarian movement, dreadlocks - long, tightly plaited or knotted strands of hair worn to the shoulders - were first adopted in Jamaica beore the Second World War as an affirmation of identity. They originated as an imitation of hairstyles worn in Ethiopia under Haile Selassie (Ras Tafari), also recalling the lion's mane evolked in his title 'Lion of Judah'. Originally worn only by a small number of true believers, dreadlocks spread through the black community, first in Jamaica and soon after in Britain, with the increase of black consciousness and the popularity of Reggae music. By the mid 1970's, locks ( as they wre usually know by wearers) were a familiar sight in London, also being worn by some young whites of both sexes. Short locks were fashionable in the mid-eighties among devotees of revived funk, soul & hip hop culture in the UK and the USA. Later in the decade tangled ringlets, often hennaed, were one of the badges of the crusties

  • Between 1957 and 1962 the cropped hairstyle common among many male pre-teens and teenagers in the USA was a fashionable fad in Britain, worn by those emulating the 'progressive' aspects (rather than the more flamboyant rock & roll look) of American pop culture. The style, which first evolved into a so-called semi-crew, then into a 'Roman' look, was out of fashion from about 1963 to 1967, when late mods and proto-skinheads revived it. The crew cut was revived by members of the two tone movement from 1979, and a mutation of the crew cut, the flat-top, was a fad of the early Eighties. The name of the style probably ddervies from its popularity withAmerican college rowing crews of the 1930s and 1940s.

Processed hair as worn by such celebrities as Michael Jackson and Prince continued to causes controversy in the 1980s but the term 'conk' was no longer applied. It originated either as an alteration of Congolene, the trademark name of a hair-straightener preparation, or as a slang word for the head.

• The natural result of the convergence of long hair and Afro-Caribbean hair texture, the Afro (a shortening of 'Afro-American') became an emblematic expression of black pride in 1967. Until that time most black militants of both sexes had worn short or medium-length hairstyles indistinguishable from those of conformist black society (in which the imitation of white styles by straightening and bleaching was also widespread). Allowing hair to grow and then teasing it into a mass of tight curls produced a spectacular anti-Establishment symbol that quickly spread from the street and campuses to the music and fashion industries. Among white hippies, both male and female, and particularly in Britain, the style became detached from its political overtones and was adopted as the hair fad of the moment in the winter of 1967-8, necessitating backcombing or perming. Afro wigs were also worn by those forbidden to grow their hair, such as American prison inmates, and by those who were willing to make only a part-time fashion statement. The Afro was never African (it was banned in Tanzania as a symbol of neo-colonialism), it was rejected by Rastafarians, and by about 1973 was mainly limited to the visual repertoire of funk music groups.

  • Also known as the Eton flop and the floppie, this male hairstyle consists of a short back and sides with a long hank of hair swept across the top of the head to fall over the eyes. Inspired by appearance of pre-Second World War aesthetes, the flop is actually common to many British public schools, where it allows languid gestures - the tossing of the head, the flicking of the wrist - without offending against rules prohibiting long hair, which usually stipulate that the collar must not be obscured. The flop flourished through the 1980s and was still in evidence in the early 1990s, when it was not confined to schoolboys but was also worn by college and university students of differing class backgrounds and by some indie pop, shambling and shoe-gazing musicians.

  • A spectacular male hairstyle of the Teddy Boy era, the elephant's trunk consisted of a tubular quiff projecting over the forehead. The arrangement was an eleboration of the early DA. Worn by the proto-glam star Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music in 1971, it was revived by some adherents of the rockabilly look in the early 1980s, including a small number of females.

The flat-top hairstyle originated as a modification of the American army-issue crew cut (the 'GI crop') following the Second World War. The short all-over military crop was lengthened and levelled off geometrically on the top, while the sides were brushed back. (In a more radical version known as the 'Mac Curtis' after a rockabilly star, a kiss curl and duck tail were included.) In the USA, the flat-top became the emblematic hairstyle of adolescent males - particularly working-class youths and rockabilly devotees - around 1956. When the neo-Rockabilly movement replaced punk for some British fashion followers in 1979, the flat-top took the place of the spiky crop to provide a vogue style comparable to the similar black 'Philly-crop' (prominent in hip hop culture) and the avant-garde geometric successors of the wedge (taken to extremes by the black model and singer Grace Jones in 1981). Bewteen 1980 and 1986 the flat-top thrived among the representatives of the 'clean-cut' wing of male fashion, having shed its specific Rockabilly overtones.

• Joe Cirello, a barber from Philadelphia, claimed to have invented the DA (the initials stand fo duck's ass' or 'duck's arse') in 1940. In fact a similar hairstyle, sometimes called the Argentine Ducktail, consisting of greased hair piled high on top and swept back at the sides to form a ridge or seam at the back, was simultaneously fashionable among the Mexican-American Pachucos of Los Angeles. The DA was adopted as an emblematic coiffure by disaffected young males all over the English-speaking world and beyond (particularlty in France and Sweden) during the 1950s. In Britain it was part of the visual identity of Teddy Boys and Rockers, along with the Quiff and the Elephant's Trunk.

The beehive hairstyle. Also known in the USA as the B-52 (after the giant bulbous WWII bombr plane), the beehive-shaped hairdo was emblematic of working-class chic in the early 1960s. The style originated in the USA in 1958 as one of a variety of elaborately teased and lacquered versions of big hair that mutaed from ealier pageboy and bouffant styles. It was adopted in Britain shortly after, typically worn with pastel colours, taffeta and stilettos. By the mid 1960s the beehive was out of fashion, but probably subconsciously influenced the later more modest conical cuts and bouffants worn by mod girls. The beehive has continued to fascinate connoisseurs and revivalists of 1960s kitsch. It was resurrected by the B-52's, an avant-garde post punk pop group from Macon, Georgia, in 1978, and again by British chanteuse Mari Wilson in 1980, also featuring in John WAters' 1988 cult film, _Hairspray_.
