Question:
I'm going through my teaching credential program right now to be a high
school Math teacher. I'm just pondering the question: Why do we have to
study Math? I'm asking this specifically from the point of view of a high
school students because often times they learn and do different problems in
Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Cal or even Calculus. Yet how many of those problem
would they actually get to use in real life? How would you answer such
question?
Answer:
Give them some problems they would HAVE to answer in real life:
1) calculating materials for simple projects like painting a room (compute
wall area, figure from how much a gallon of paint covers)
2) deciding which credit offer is good or which is misleading (requires them
to compute compound interest and other things)
3) compare costs with deference to discount versus sales tax versus shipping
costs on whether to buy locally or from a mail order catalog
4) figure investment values over time
5) try to fill out a 1040 form that is NOT a short form
6) calculate costs of a trip (gas milage, average cost of fuel in an area,
hotel and eating costs)
7) make a budget... give hourly wage, check out rent costs, food costs over
time
Just a few ideas: Life is a math story problem.
Oh... and another thing: look up average salaries of certain careers and
compare math requirements (by the way, not all jobs that require some math
require college... even plumbers, electricians and car mechanics have math
problems in their daily work)
