LEVON ARONIAN
(born Oct-06-1982) Armenia

[what is this?]
Levon Aronian was born October 6, 1982. He learned to play chess when he was nine years old and, in 1994, he won the World Under-12 Championship ahead of future top-ten players Ruslan Ponomariov, Alexander Grischuk, and Etienne Bacrot. He became a grandmaster in 2001 and the World Junior Champion in 2002, scoring 10/13 in the finals.

Aronian took part in the FIDE World Championship (2004) in Tripoli, eliminating Magnus Carlsen and Gadir Guseinov before losing his third-round match with Pavel Smirnov. 2005 proved to Aronian's most successful year thus far--it saw him gain over 50 FIDE rating points to claim a spot in the top 10 on the April list. He was joint first at the Gibraltar Masters (2005) and clear first at the Karabakh International (2005). He capped the year by winning the FIDE World Cup (2005) in December, without loss of a single game.

Aronian went on to even greater successes in 2006. After achieving a modest result in Corus Wijk aan Zee (2006), he won in the last round of Linares (2006) to take first place by half a point ahead of Teimour Radjabov and Veselin Topalov. In August he captured the Chess960 World Championship by beating Peter Svidler 5-3 in an eight-game match in Mainz. Toward the end of the year he shared first place in the Tal Memorial (2006), and then started off 2007 with a joint victory at Corus (2007). Currently, he is in fifth place on the FIDE world rating list, and has been ranked as high as third (in April and July of 2006). In 2007 he qualified for a World Championship final for the first time, defeating Carlsen and Alexey Shirov in two Candidates' matches to earn a spot in the eight-player FIDE World Championship Tournament (2007) in Mexico City. He was unable to replicate some of his earlier tournament successes there and ended up in joint sixth place, where Viswanathan Anand became the World Chess Champion. The year 2008 started with a great success at Corus (2008) where he shared first place with Magnus Carlsen.

notyetagm: <Davolni: nice game <notyetagm>!!! who is "Skriabin" anyways? 3212 rating shouldn't be easy to get.. probably a top GM, right?>

And this was a -blitz- game by Aronian!

If he plays in the Tal Memorial Blitz tournament he may very well win it, especially since Anand is not playing.

timhortons: <notyetagm> i chat with AG regarding his string of losses at icc and he told me hes playing horribly bad, i did not pursue the issue but i guess aronian is busy with tournaments now and still he play like 10 or 20 blitz in a row at icc around 4pm to 6pm new york time.

What time would that be wherever Aronian is?

timhortons: actually aronian is log in now at icc though not playing, im not implying that he play on precise time always but, right, if we could figure out if aronian in europe is playing while AG in icc play at the same time then its a shared account indeed.

Davolni: <notyetagm> since you seem to be very familiar with ICC and stuff, is there a way to find out who is the player, if it doesn't say it in the profile?

I just started that free trial, but it's hard to get your way aroung, when you are not familiar with the site and the program....

Aug-22-08   ljh: andrinogiardino cannot be levon, since AG was logged on while levon was playing in sochi, watching the games (but no playing).

it could be his girlfriend log on to see him, but i think she has her own handle - anyone know what it is?

if it not her then maybe his family?

timhortons: the great morozovich(benefactor) of icc watch while andrino play, maybe his getting intrigue by these handle. moro now is the king of blitz at play chess.com having overtaken raffael rating who already stop playing.I hope moro go back playing at icc, hes log in at icc always but not playing.

one thing that differ with playchess.com and icc is that annotated games and lecture at icc is free with icc chess fm while at chessbase-playchess.com they provide limited hours of free lecture to subscriber.

you need to pay some more with chessbase to have it

True <Slo> but 'ducats' are relatively inexpensive although if I recall you had to purchase them in small blocks of ten...

Hope that one of our <CG.com> members with a PlayChess account can tease us with short review of the "Levon Aronian in Hamburg" live show (or having seen the replay) with hosts André Schulz and IM Oliver Reeh. :)

It's possible that more is forthcoming... ChessBase also said -

<"Everyone had a great deal of fun with Levon, who was entertaining, humorous and profound. We can feel a few interesting DVDs with him coming. Oh yes, and this last series of pictures are for his girlfriend Ari in Australia.">

GM Levon Aronian on DVD! Now what could be better than that? <grin> :^) - Mal

yes nice choice of pics!!!
from time to time I'm trying to keep myself updated of what's going on in the CHESSWORLD!!! ;)

I had a free trial of ICC, but it just expired, so I'll probably be getting a membership for a year, to see how it works. a little complicated from the first sight, but I think I'll get used to it.

interesting to meet a lot of GM's. I was just chatting the other day with Zaven Andriasyan. Nice kid indeed.

Nice avatar, just read the story behind it the other day from your page.

Yes, it was really nice to see them presented. GM Levon Aronian is such a nice guy which can easily be seen and understood from his fabulous interviews and the many wonderful photos of him with fantastic expressions to match! Thought the one's that 'ChessBase' gave us were exemplary of my previous statement. And, the fact they included what he was thinking in actual time the pics were taken! Just superb! :))

In addition my dear friend <Davolni> you met and hung out with him! <jealous grin ensues> I remember well what you said about your encounter and all the great photos you took and later shared with us! <Super Grin>

Yeah, it takes awhile to get the hang of it... So many shortcuts to discover so many interesting things! I've had the great pleasure to speak with many titled players on the ICC! Just hook-up with all the nice guys & gals and they will always steer you right! ;) Also, always monitor the 'Main Menu' when the Admins answer questions submitted by members - you'll learn a lot! Re: Chess surfing - I must have thousands of informative and useful Chess links stored on my computer by now (all well indexed, btw)... It never gets any smaller it just gets bigger and bigger! :)

<Nice avatar, just read the story behind it the other day from your page.>

Hehehe... Well, it was indeed a dilemma with my old avatar "Knight on the chessboard" gone... :( So, when I found it ("Women in a Hat" - painting by Picasso!) it just immediately appealed to me and also the fact that I've never seen anyone else use it before. :)

<have a good long weekend everyone and looking forward to Bilbao!!! see u!>

We will - we will - <"We will!"> - In <CHESS> we trust! ~lol~ And, don't worry we're saving the <'Best for Last'> - the Bilbao 'Grand Slam' Finals start next week! :^) - Mal

Sep-01-08   Vakus: Hey-Barev!

Sep-05-08   DUS: Viva Levon Aronian!
Sep-06-08   VaselineTopLove: I like Aronian's dress sense. He always seems to wear nice suits.
Sep-06-08   ljh: radjabov - aronian very intensity national struggle

aronian dresses well because of his girlfriend's choices since 2 years

isn't scriabin was aronian?

viva levon aronian!

This picture says a lot about what a cool guy Aronian is. After having lost the game, most top players would be pretty pissed but not Levon.

arsen387: <Vakus> barev, thanks for greetings in our native language and also thanks for the info. If Scriabin is an IM , that somehow explains why notyetagm's posted game was so one-sided.

And seems like Levon slowly improves his position in Bilbao after a bad start. Hope he will score another win or 2 in the second half of the tournament and will finish in one of top places. Go Levon!

  malthrope: <Davolni: Bravo Aronian!!!

2 consecutive wins against Topalov and Anand!!!! >

Indeed <Davolni> pretty amazing! ;)

As the Bilbao draws closer to its final conclusion Aronian wins BIG time! <grin>

It's of interest that the pairings for Bilboa - Rounds #9 and #10 are well suited for both Aronian and Ivanchuk!

First the Leaderboard after round #8 has finished:

1 // Topalov - 13 points (+3 -1 =4)
2 // Aronian - 12 points (+3 -2 =3)
3-4 // Ivanchuk - 11 points (+2 -1 =5)
3-4 // Carlsen - 11 points (+3 -3 =2)

And, the pairings...

• Round 9: Friday, Sept 12th

Ivanchuk-Aronian
Radjabov-Carlsen
Anand-Topalov

Notes: So, Chucky and Levon play each other one more time... However, Topalov will have his hands full dealing with Vishy with Radja and Magnus will surely have a spirited encounter. :)

• Round 10: Saturday, Sept 13th

Topalov-Ivanchuk
Carlsen-Anand
Aronian-Radjabov

Notes: Aronian will be gunning for Radja of that there can be no doubt of that! <grin> Meanwhile, Topalov has to face Chucky and Magnus must deal with Vishy.

So, it appears that these final two rounds will decide it all! :)) I think Aronian and Ivanchuk both have excellent chances here assuming that they draw their game in Round #9. Since if they both win their final games in Round #10 their respective scores will be...

1 // Aronian - 16 (+4 -2 =4)
2 // Ivanchuk - 15 (+3 -1 =6)

Assuming that Vishy either draws or wins against Topy and Magnus makes no progress against Radja and also draws with Vishy. Although he still can keep equal to Ivanchuk with a win against Radja and a draw with Vishy.

Clearly, Aronian was tired in his win over Vishy from Round #8 missing several easier wins in the long endgame (R + R + P's vs. Q + R), but he's now in the hunt for 1st place and that says it all! <grin> Meanwhile, the Ironman Ivanchuk still has freshness and sparkle in his play and this bodes well for him too! Besides, the 'Rest Day' comes just in the nick of time which will benefit them both. :)

Of course, I do have a vested interest in all this due to my betting addiction in the <ChessBookie> game! Since I have 'Aronian-Ivanchuk' and 'Ivanchuk-Aronian' in the 'Perfecta' bet (betting on #1 & #2) as well as each of them as overall winner! <sheepish grin>

Now all we can do is wait for Caissa to play out her hand... ;) In which "Exciting" is clearly an understatement! ~lol~ :^) My Best, - Mal

  Davolni: Hey <Mal> ;)

thanks for the detailed info on the rounds and for some hopefully accurate predictions;)

yes, the last 2 rounds may change a lot of things.
What a tournament it is!!!

how many exciting games are we witnessing???!!!!

yes, Aronian's last 2 well deserved victories changed his spot in the list dramatically!!! hopefully he can get inspiration from these 2 wins and play well tomorrow.

I guess at this point, keeping in mind he's facing Ivanchuk, the most important thing is not to lose agains Chucky with blacks....

and then with Radja, hopefully he can get full 3 points!!!

I like the "rat race" for the 1st place!!!

well, good luck to all players and all the watchers!!!

Yep! I didn't cover every possible contingency just the active features which place Aronian & Ivanchuk as Number #1 and #2, Since if they (Levon and Chucky) have a decisive game and Topalov beats Chucky and/or Magnus beats both Radja and Vishy all bets are off! ~lol~ It was of course meant only as practical predictions to produce a desired result. ;)

<I like the "rat race" for the 1st place!!!

well, good luck to all players and all the watchers!!!>

Like I stated in my <Current Chess Events> contained in my Profile...

<Make no mistake about it the Bilbao 'Grand Slam' Chess tourney is gonna be a real 'Ball Buster!' ~lol~ :^)>

And, so it is! "Good Luck" to Levon and Chucky you've both got my vote! <grin> :^) - Mal
