Two Player Bosworth Variations
1. Split Camp Variation
Allows
two players to play from all four sides of the board.
1a. Players start this two-player variation with
their four starting pawns split into the two center
spaces of facing field camps. Unused game pieces are
placed face down in the remaining two outside camp
spaces - these spaces will not be used in the game.
1b. Pawns can move and capture in all directions.
1c. All other rules remain the same.
2. Two Free Companies (four-sided)
Variation
Allows two players
to play with four kingdoms in the game.
2a. This two-player variation sets up just like
a normal four-player game. Each player controls the
color on the end opposite of his or her opponent.
The remaining two colors are designated as Free Companies.
2b. On their turn, a player may move one of his or
her pieces, or one of the pieces from either Free
Company. The piece may be moved to an unoccupied space,
or to a space occupied by his or her opponent, or
to a space occupied by either of the Free Companies.
Movement ending in an space occupied by an opponent
or Free Company captures that piece. Because they
cannot be trusted, Free Companies are usually friendly
when a player moves them, and unfriendly when an opponent
moves them.
2c.On a player's turn, he or she may even use a piece
from the Free Companies to capture one of his or her
own pieces!
2d. There is no reward (i.e. the granting of a Queen)
for capturing the king of a Free Company.
2e. Pieces from the Free Companies are only removed
from the game if they are captured by another piece
- they remain on the board, and in the game, even
if their King is captured!
2f. At the end of each player's turn, randomly fill
all unoccupied spaces in either Free Company field
camp with the top piece their respective draw piles.
2g. All other rules remain the same.
3. Control Two Kingdoms Variation
Allows two players to play from all
four sides of the board by controlling two kingdoms
each.
3a. This two-player variation plays exactly like
the four-player version, except that each player controls
the two kingdoms that are directly across from each
other.
3b. After set-up, each player shuffles the remaining
24 pieces from their two kingdoms into a single draw
pile, and draws four-pieces for their hand. Players
may only fill an open field camp space(s), with pieces
of the same color as the field camp.
3c. All other rules remain the same.
Three Player Bosworth Variations
1. Free Companies (four sided) Variation
Allows three players to play from
four sides, with four kingdoms in the game.
1a. This three-player variation sets up just like
a normal four-player game. Each player controls one
of the colors, and the remaining color is designated
as a Free Company.
1b. On their turn, a player may move one of his
or her pieces, or one of the pieces from the Free
Company. The piece may be moved to an unoccupied space,
or to a space occupied by his or her opponent, or
to a space occupied by the Free Company. Movement
ending in a space occupied by an opponent or Free
Company captures that piece. Because they cannot be
trusted, Free Companies are usually friendly when
a player moves them, and unfriendly when an opponent
moves them.
1c. On a player's turn, he or she may even use a
piece from the Free Company to capture one of his
or her own pieces!
1d. There is no reward (i.e. the granting of a Queen)
for capturing the king of a Free Company.
1e. Pieces from the Free Companies are only removed
from the game if they are captured by another piece
- they remain on the board, and in the game, even
if their King is captured!
1f. At the end of each player's turn, randomly fill
all unoccupied spaces in the Free Company field camp
with the top piece their draw piles.
1g. All other rules remain the same.
Bosworth Variations for any Number of
Players
Here are options to make any BOSWORTH
game -- be there two, three or four player ones -- a
little more challenging.
1. Appoint Your Starting Field Camp
Variation
Allows players to choose four pieces
(besides four pawns) to open the game. (This can apply
to both the standard rules and the variations.)
To start the game, each player chooses four pieces,
and places them face down in his or her field camp.
Prior to the start of the game, all players simultaneously
turn the pieces face-up to reveal their starting army.
2. Keep Fighting Variation
Rather than removing pieces from the board after
a king is captured, turn the pieces still on the board
into Free Companies. Pieces remaining in the draw
pile and reinforcement hand are eliminated from the
game. See Free Company variations
for two- and three-players for additional rules.
3. "BOZ" (aka "BOSWORTH Lite")
A
really quick Bosworth
variation when time is tight
3a. Each player starts the game with only nine pieces:
4 Pawns, 1 Knight, 1 Bishop, 1 Rook, 1 queen and 1
King.
3b. Players only keep three pieces in their hand
instead of four.
3c. All other rules are the same.
