Igor Ivanov 1947-2005

Igor Ivanov 1947-2005

Igor passed away on November 17th 2005 in St. George, Utah. The following tribute was written a month ago for ChessBase magazine and will appear with photographs of Igor and 160 of his best games. Igor played somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 games in his career. Unfortunately he was not a good record keeper and most of them are not available. If you played Igor and the game is not in Mega 2005 I would be very grateful if you could send me a copy at imwjd@aol.com.

A funeral will be held for Igor in St. George on November 29 and there will be a tribute to him at the St. George Chess Club the evening of December 16. A tournament will be held in his honor the following day. Contact Alan Crooks at alan@stgeorgechess.com for more information.

Grand Master Igor Ivanov by John Donaldson

Igor Ivanov was born in St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) on January 8, 1947. At age 5 his mother taught him to play chess and it was not long before he could beat her. Igor's first book was one on chess and even at a very young age he could remember his games. By age 8 Igor was an accomplished player, attending the chess palace daily where he was singled out as one of the most promising young talents, but this potential was to lay dormant for some time. Igor's mother wished him to be a concert pianist and asked her son to emphasize his musical abilities rather than play chess. It was only when she died when he was 14 and left an orphan that he started to play again. His music talent (piano and cello) earned him special privileges and his own room in the orphanage but it was chess that he loved more. At 18 he matriculated at the University of Leningrad, but soon gave up the study of mathematics to pursue a career as a chess professional.

Initially Igor had a job as the manager of an army chess club in Leningrad. The work was fine but did not allow him much time to play so when he was offered a position as a professional player in Tajikistan he quickly accepted. Igor stayed there only a year before moving to Uzbekistan where he played first board for the republic in the annual Spartakiad. It was in such a competition that he first came to the attention of the entire chess world when he beat reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov in 1979. Soviet players had become familiar with Igor's name years earlier, but particularly in 1978 and 1979. Playing throughout the Soviet empire Igor not only won several important competitions but did it in such a dominating fashion that he couldn't help but be noticed: 1st in the Zaitsev Memorial in Vladivostock in 1978, 1st at Yaroslavl 1979 and again first at the Tashli Tailiev Memorial in Ashkhabad at the end of 1979. His score in the latter was 12 from 13 (!), three points ahead of second place finisher Kakageldyev. Regrettably few of the games from these events are preserved. You can find some here and there in Shakhmaty Bulletin, Shakhmaty Riga, Shakhmaty v SSR and lesser known Soviet chess journals, but never complete bulletins for the events, the game scores of which were likely lost long ago.

The victory over Karpov earned Igor his first trip abroad to play in the Capablanca Memorial in Cuba in 1980. The return trip home to the Soviet Union made a refueling stop in Gander, Newfoundland, where Igor asked for and was granted political asylum by the Canadian government. This move had, as one might expect, profound changes on Igor's life. An increase in personal freedom was balanced by a lack of economic security. As a professional player in the Soviet Union Igor did quite well, but such an occupation barely existed in North America in 1980, especially in Canada. Igor also had to adapt as a chess player. Playing in Swiss System events over a weekend with two or three games a day is not quite the same thing as a 16 player round robin that lasts three weeks. Nor is having to score almost 100 percent to win a prize.

Igor settled in Montreal and quickly picked up French and English. He and the rapidly improving Kevin Spraggett would dominate Canadian chess over much of the next decade. Igor won the Closed Championship of his newly adopted country four times in five tries from 1981 to 1987. In 1985 he tied for first place in both Canadian Open and Canadian Closed Chess Championships at Edmonton, Alberta, while playing his games simultaneously! Igor played for Canada in the 1984 and 1988 Olympiads and represented the nation in the 1982 Interzonal in Toluca, Mexico. This event was to prove to be a heartbreaker for Igor, though he didn't know it at the time. Scoring 7.5 from 13 he was fourth on tiebreak, but the GM norm - good for the title in an Interzonal - was 7.8. Certainly the way Igor was playing he probably thought the title was just around the corner, but it would be 24 years before he would become a GM. One can't help but wonder how that title might have made his life easier with more invitations and better conditions.

Canada is a very nice country, and one that has produced some good chess players (Yanofsky, Anderson, Suttles, Biyiasas, Spraggett, Lesiege, Charbonneau and Bluvstein) but it is not a promising place to be a professional. It is no accident than former Candidate Kevin Spraggett lives in Europe nor that Igor moved to the United States. There is no pot of gold for professional chess players in the USA but if you are willing to travel there is always someplace holding an event with a first prize of $300 on up. Chess players from around the world are familiar with the World and National Opens, massive events often with over 1000 players participating and five figures for first place. Such tournaments are few and far between and the competition is such that no one can be certain to win. To survive as a professional in North America on a diet of just playing requires one find smaller events where the chances of winning are highly likely. Igor hit this trail in earnest in the 1980s and by 1997 he had won 9 of the US Chess Federation's Grand Prix series. This yearly competition, where points are awarded each event on the basis of the amount of prize money available ($300 first might equal six points, saw Igor reach close to 500 points in a single year. This does not equal many weekends off! At the end of the year Igor would often have to make long journeys to play in small events to secure his victory in the Grand Prix. One time he traveled back and forth to Atlanta from Los Angeles (roundtrip close to 6,000 miles or 10,000 kilometers) in less than a week by bus!

Igor started to play less frequently in the late 1990s turning his attention to coaching. He had worked in the past as a second for Viktor Kortchnoi in the 1981 World Championship, but he was most successful in his job at the Shelby School in Arizona, where he coached them to two national championships. More recently Igor relocated first to Central and then St. George, Utah. He is the Grandmaster-in-Residence (he got the GM title in 2005 for norms that he made in the early 1990s and was unaware of) at the St. George Chess School and lives in the the mountains of southern Utah with his wife Elizabeth, a retired teacher. He teaches chess, runs a chess camp every summer, give piano recitals at the St. George Tabernacle , takes care of Petruska and Sasha (two very spoiled cats) and is an avid gardener and reader. Igor is much liked by the many chess players that appreciate his excellent sense of humor, kindness towards animals and love of life. The author of this piece is confident that Igor and his games will be remembered for a long time.

FIDE Presidential Elections May 2006

It looks like Kirsan Iljumzhinov will have opposition in the next FIDE Presidential elections in Turin in May 2006. Leo Battesti, who is the organiser of one of the most important international chess events (the Corsican Circuit) and is also Vice-President of the French Chess Federation, has announced he is running. Karpov has stated he is thinking of becoming involved in the race (http://www.marca.es/edicion/marca/ajedrez/es/desarrollo/590608.html) and now according to ChessBase: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2736 Bessel Kok, representative of the Dutch Chess Federation; and Ali Nihat Yazici, President of the Turkish Chess Federation have also announced their candidature. The cynic in me believes that the sitting President will win whatever the merits of the opposition.

Garry Kasparov still heads the July 2005 FIDE rating list 24 points clear of the field. He will undoubtably head the next two before dropping out if he maintains his announced retirement. The battle for second position sees Anand keep the number 2 spot only on the number of games played in the last rating period. Anand gained 3 points and Topalov 10. Peter Leko was inactive in the last rating period and he is 10 points clear of Vassily Ivanchuk who overtakes Vladimir Kramnik. Ivanchuk gained 13 points and Kramnik lost 9. Peter Svidler jumps 3 places and 13 points to lie at 7, Polgar gained 3 points and maintains 8th, Bacrot lost 2 but stays at 9. Levon Aronian makes the first big leap of the list gaining 31 points and jumping into the top 10 for the first time.

Jan Timman played Andrei Volokitin in a 4 game match in Leon (Spain) on 24th June 2005. The match took place on Friday 24th in Pub Haddock. It consisted of 4 games at 20 minutes + 10 seconds (not accumulative).

Games in PGN

Fernando Gómez reports: The young Ukranian GM won 2,5-1,5. On the 1st and 3rd games, Andrei won with white pieces against Timman's French Winawer that he had already prepared for his recent match against Bruzon in Curaçao. Andrei always had the initiave and the upper hand in both games scoring an spectacular short victory in the 3rd one. On the 2nd game Timman played a Rossolimo Attack and Volokitin answered sacrificing a pawn for some activity, Andrei reached a rook ending but could not win despite being a pawn up. On the 4th game Timman played an Open Sicilian and Volokitin soon had a very comfortable game, but the experienced Dutch GM drove the game into a double rook ending that was able to win with good technique. The match was followed by many spectators in the playing area and outside it thanks to several screens installed for that purpose. After the games, there was a press conference where the public asked many questions to those two great players.

One unusual rule was that draw by mutual agreement between the players was forbidden. The players weren't allowed to offer a draw or speak to their opponent. The player could claim the draw only via Arbiter in 3 cases: A) Perpetual check B) Triple repetition C) A theoretically drawn position. Only the Arbiter can confirm the result of the game. The Arbiters will be advised by Zurab Azmaiparashvili on this. Arbiters: Chief Arbiter: Joaquin Espejo (Spain),Deputy arbiters: Boris Postovski (USA),Panaqiotis Nikolopoulos (Greece).

FIDE Championship in Argentina

FIDE have announced that their double round robin World Championship has been awarded to the Province of San Luis, Argentina with a prize fund of USD 1,000,000. Its due to take place 27th September - 16th October 2005. The offer is also backed by a financial guarantee and an agreement concerning further organsing details signed by the Governor of San Luis, H.E. Dr Alberto Rodriguez Saa and the FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

FIDE (http://www.fide.com) have released a Communique for the 2nd quarter FIDE Presidential Board Meeting 2005 (15th May). It says that they have approved the final list of participants who have all confirmed their participation in the World Chess Championship Tournament. This is a major coup for them as one of my doubts was their ability to sign up players. They have all the players who might have been expected to play. I have become very cynical about their ability to get this event off the ground but this announcement places them very close to making this happen. However if for whatever reason the event doesn't take place it would be the end of any FIDE credibility, from their point of view it has to take place and so almost certainly will. The classical format gives this a legitimacy that their knockout format never had. However their plan to go back to the knockout to find a challenger for the winner will hopefully be changed. One of these every two years would be comparatively easy to finance and they should stick to this format.

1. GM Rustam Kasimdzhanov (UZB, World Champion)
2. GM Vishwanathan Anand (IND, World Champion 2000-2002)

Linares 2005

Round 14 Topalov came up with an interesting novelty early on, Kasparov seemed to have defused it but then panicked and Topalov won. Photo © Michiel Abeln

Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Michael Adams, Francisco Vallejo Pons and Rustam Kasimdzhanov were the 7 players at this year's event. The event took place 22nd February - 10th March 2005. Round 1 Wednesday February 23rd 2005. Rest days March 1st and 7th 2005.

Garry Kasparov took first place on tie-break (most wins with black) from Vesselin Topalov. Both finished on 8/12. Kasparov had a fantastic tournament, recognisably back to his best but the final round loss to Topalov certainly took some of the shine off the victory. Topalov would have won the event using normal tie-breaks like Sonnen-berger as he won their mini-match of two games. Both were ruthless against the struggling Adams, Kasimdzhanov and Vallejo. Viswanathan Anand fell away at the end getting into a lost position against Vallejo and then losing in the final round to Adams. The only undefeated player was Peter Leko but he didn't win any games either and after his win in Wijk aan Zee this was a disappointing result, he almost passed unnoticed like a ghost through the event playing very few games of any interest. He saved a lost position against Topalov in round 4.

Michiel Abeln was on the spot for TWIC and provided reports until the end of the event.

Fischer arrives in Iceland

Fischer's new Icelandic Passport valid until March 2015

Bobby Fischer arrived in Iceland late on Thursday night. This ended an episode in his life that started on Tuesday 13th July 2004, when he was arrested at Tokyo's Narita International Airport on Tuesday 13th July 2004. Fischer was detained for a total of 253 days in a Japanese jail as he resisted deportation to the US. Fischer won the "Match of the Century" against Boris Spassky in Iceland in 1972, This was a major event in Icelandic history and their Parliament decided on Friday 18th March to grant Fischer a passport and this was ratified on Monday 21st March 2005.

Fischer was released on Thursday morning by the Japanese as he had a valid passport. He arrived late Thursday or early Friday in Reykjavic.

On Friday he launched an attack on all a sundry. He also confirmed he will never play chess again saying the game is "utterly corrupt ... and has been for many years." He is "finished" with chess and stated delusionally "I don't play the old chess. But obviously if I did, I would be the best."

FIDE Unification Proposal

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has given an interview to Yuri Vasiliev of Sport Express with a World Championship Unification proposal. The decision was taken at the FIDE Presidential meeting in Tbilisi 26th-27th February 2005.

Eight players will be invited: Rustam Kasimdzanov (Fide champion), Michael Adams (Fide runner-up), Vladimir Kramnik (Braingames champion, a very interesting use of terminology), Peter Leko (Braingames runner-up), Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Vaselin Topalov and Alexander Morozevich (the four top rated players) for a double round robin.

All 8 players will be sent official contracts by 15th April 2005. A player declining invitation will be replaced by the next highest rated player. Elista is proposed as venue for the time being, although other countries are expected to bid. The prize money for the tournament is currrently 500,000 US dollars. Singapore, Armenia and Georgia have so far expressed willingness to organise this tournament. Their official offers are awaited. In December 2005, a world cup tournament (on the lines of FIDE KO) will be held. Its winner will be the challenger to play against the Unified champion. Source: http://www.sport-express.ru/art.shtml?99853

The proposals don't look likely to be attractive enough to get all the players to sign up. The event would probably have to be a quadrouple round to make it special enough to be a world title (although I have always advocated a match tournament to clear up the mess a number of players object to this format because they believe the other players would throw games), the money doesn't look anywhere near enough and Kramnik has made it clear that reunification only has meaning if bound up with a proper cycle, this proposal is bound up with the failed FIDE KO system with its fast time-rates and media unfriendly format. Also cast iron financial guarantees would be important to everyone.

Vladimir Kramnik gave a detailed and important interview to New in Chess after his match against Leko that appears in full on the ChessBase site. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2154.

In addition there has been news of the FIDE - Spanish dispute. Zurab Azmaiparashvili got into a fight with security guards at the Olympiad in Calvia. FIDE completely support Azmaiparashvili in this case and now have expressed this by a vote of no confidence in the Spanish Chess Federation. Azmaiparashvili has increasing power within FIDE and this issue seems to have added to it, which is unfortunate in my view.

ACP Tour Standings

January was an interesting month in the ACP Tour standings. The Corus tournaments in Wijk aan Zee and the Bermuda Invitational Tournament caused some important changes in the standings. Thanks to his win in the Netherlands Peter Leko moved into 2nd place of the ACP Tour by gaining 660 points. He is still clearly behind Viswanathan Anand whose second place in Wijk aan Zee helped him consolidate his lead (1406 points). Both Boris Gelfand and Pentala Harikrishna benefited a lot from their joint victory in Bermuda. The Israeli advanced to place three (916) and Harikrishna celebrated his first ACP points by jumping right behind the magic top-8. Into this group entered Alexander Grischuk. His gain of 93 points in Wijk aan Zee may look rather modest, but the Russian now occupies the 7th place of the standings (393). However the players with totals less than 400 points are extremely close to each other, as can be seen in the current standings at http://www.chess-players.org/eng/tour/standings.html

The result of the Third Gibtele.com Chess Festival in Gibraltar hardly changed anything in the ACP Tour as all five winners are not ACP members. The coming month is full of interesting events. Both closed tournaments "XXII Torneo Ciudad de Linares" and "Karpov Tournament" in Poikovsky will be the highlights of this period. There will be another A category event taking place, the Aeroflot Open in Moscow, as well as the strong open in Cappelle la Grande.

January 2005 FIDE Rating List

FIDE have release the January 2005 Rating List. Garry Kasparov keeps the number one spot and his rating over 2800. A very bad European Club Cup performance was saved to an extent by an impressive victory in the Russian Championship, nevertheless Kasparov still lost 9 points. Anand closes the gap further with his 8/11 at the Olympiad being worth 5 rating points. Topalov who hasn't played a rated game in this period nevertheless rises from 5 to 3 due to Kramnik's loss of 6 rating points in retaining his title against Leko in Brissago which makes him now 4th in the world and Leko rises 6 for the same reason and moves up to 5th. Morozevich dropped 17 points at the Olympiad and Russian Championship and is down from 4 to 6 in the World. Michael Adams played 20 games gaining just 1 rating point. Peter Svidler played 19 and his rating remained exactly the same.

Stalemate in Fischer Case

Saemi Palsson - Fischer's former bodyguard

There has been no movement since the granting of a Visa to Bobby Fischer by the Icelandic Government. Bobby Fischer has now been held in detention in Ushiku, the immigration lock-up in Japan, for almost six months. News: Einar S. Einarsson

15 January 2005 A status report from RJF Committee - Iceland

19th Jan: Japanese Justice Ministry lawyers tell the Tokyo District Court they have no intention of letting him leave Japan for Iceland.

Other material

Einar S Einarsson International Affairs Liaison for the Icelandic Chess Federation says they are quite concerned about the fate of former world chess champion Bobby Fischer and have formed a special, the The RJF Committee Iceland in support for his freedom from his detention in Japan. Members of this committee include GM Fridrik Olafsson, former Fide president, and G. Thorarinsson, chief organizer of the Fischer – Spassky match in 1972, Lilja Grétarsdóttir president of ICF and more.

On December 15th Bobby Fischer was granted a residence permit in Iceland. The Icelandic Authorities announced that Bobby Fischer is welcomed to Iceland and that Mr. David Oddsson foreign minister has decided at his request to grant him a residence visa.

Arnold Denker 1914-2005

Arnold Denker has died at the age of 90. Born on February 20th 1914 he died after a brief illness on January 2nd 2005 according to his son Mitchell. Denker learned his chess on the New York scene in the 1920s and 1930s. He was US Champion in 1944 which was perhaps his most impressive result. He retained it in 1946 after beating Herman Steiner in a match. In 1945 he played Botvinnik on top board in the US vs USSR Radio match and then travelled to Moscow the following year for the return match over the board where he played Smyslov. He was 3rd= at Hastings 1945-6. His most important tournament was the Groningen 1946 tournament where he finished 10th=, this was effectively a Candidates Tournament for the World Championship Match Tournament in 1948. After this Denker's business committments prevented a professional career, and most of his chess after this was confined to the US. He seems to have lived a varied life including being a boxer in his early years. Denker was awarded the IM title in 1950 and then later in 1981 the GM title based on long past achievements (a very dubious practice that distorts historical records in my view, an IM title earned in 1950 was worth far more than a recalculated GM title in 1981). His "The Bobby Fischer I Knew and other Stories" is a fun and interesting read. Later he was an important chess organiser in the US but also continued to play until 2001.
