Online chess instruction and games for kids

Playing in a chess team is one of the enjoyable and stimulating aspects of the game.

At a lower level children can play in school teams, but stronger and more ambitious players will also want to represent their club or area.

We run teams in a number of competitions:

The English Primary Schools Chess Association (EPSCA) runs inter-area team competitions at Under 9 and Under 11 levels. These take place in the Spring, with a regional Zonal followed by a Final which could take place anywhere in the country. We run a Junior Squad which meets about once a month for players who would like to be considered for these teams. Please note that eligibility for these teams depends on where you go to school. Please contact us if you are in doubt about your eligibility.

The National Youth Chess Association (NYCA) runs inter-area team events for older children, with various age groups up to Under 18. Again, they have their own eligibility rules which are similar to those of EPSCA.

The Southern Counties Chess Union (SCCU) runs an annual competition for children who are under the age of 14 and graded below 90. This event gives older children who are not quite strong enough to play in adult competitions to represent Richmond.

The Thames Valley League is an adult inter-club league. Matches take place between October and April on weekday evenings on a home and away basis. We currently run five teams in conjunction with Richmond & Twickenham Chess Club, with three being mainly for our members and two mainly for R&TCC; members. This league is highly recommended for older and stronger players.

The 4 Nations Chess League (4NCL) is by far the strongest chess league in the country. Matches take place at weekends at venues in the Midlands. There are two Richmond teams at present, one for adults and one for children. If you're really ambitious you should try to make yourself available for these weekends.
