Austen fans can indulge their passion in a second mystery series.
Carrie Bebris has embarked on the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mysteries
for those of us who just can't get enough of Jane Austen's world.
Yippee. Nancy

I began
the Rick Domino series with Murder by Design,
which would be Will and Grace meets Trading Spaces if you, the reader, played Grace. Now, I must go back to Best
Murder of the Year to begin at the beginning. I absolutely
can't wait. Nancy |

Some
writers only have one novel in them and others, the Stephen King
types, produce good read after good read. One of my long time
favorites in the latter group is Lawrence Block. Block
is witty, plot clever and writes mysteries about NYC burglars and private
detectives I can't put down. Nancy |

Historical
mysteries have to engross us and get the details right, or those
of us with even a bit of period knowledge will nitpick the book
to pieces. Fortunately, we have Fiona Buckley to thank for
the very readable adventures of one Ursula Blanchard, spy for Elizabeth
I. I'm hooked.

Patricia
Cornwell gets a lot of praise and some criticism for her series
about the crime solving medical examiner for the state of Virginia. I generally recommend her books
but couldn't get more than a few pages into Isle of Dogs,
which is not part of the series, so ... And
if that's not bad enough for the confession of a confirmed fan,
I have never laid hands on Portrait
of a Killer: Jack the Ripper, Case Closed. I
watched the TV special instead. Nancy |

Cornwall has
a romantic reputation, but that must give way, of course, to the
strong propensity of residents of the UK to be involved in murder
- as victims or detectives or at the very least witnesses. In No Corners for the Devil (in round houses), author Olive Etchells has given us
the Detective Chief Inspector we should all be so lucky to have
on our side. Hopefully, DCI Channon will be back in what
should be a fantastic series. Nancy |

When
I realized I hadn't included the novels of former steeplechase
jockey Dick Francis on these pages, I was appalled at myself.
I recently reread Flying
Finish and enjoyed it just
as much the second time around. The thing about Francis'
novels is while they all seem to have the same plot if looked
at from a great distance, they don't. Each one is a unique horse-oriented adventure.
I love them all. Nancy |

don't love Henry Kisor's series about a Lakota sheriff's deputy

I
adore Edward Marston's Domesday Books, a medieval mystery series built around the travels of
a group of Domesday commisioners sent out by William the Conqueror
to sort out any issues left undone after his Domesday
Book: A Complete Translation survey of his new kingdom
of England was completed. On
the other hand, I can never tell what won't strike my fancy.
I've never been able to finish one of Marston's Elizabethan mysteries.

(series) Beatrix
Potter | When we first moved into our humble abode, we grandly
referred to it as Blenheim after the fabulous home
of the dukes of Marlborough. Naturally, I glommed onto Death at Blenheim
Palace by the husband and wife who write as Robin Paige.
I discovered myself in the middle of thoroughly enjoyable Victorian-Edwardian
series. Begin with Death at Bishop's Keep to start at the beginning. Susan
Wittig Albert, aka Robin Paige, has taken a leaf from our own
Jane Marie and begun a series
with talking animals. This is not surprising since
Beatrix Potter is the main (human) character. If you like charm in England's
Lake District, you'll be enchanted with Albert's Cottage
Tales of Beatrix Potter. I'm not very frou-frou
oriented, but I'm already looking forward to volume 3.
Begin with The Tale of
Hill top Farm. Nancy |
(series) | I
couldn't believe I'd initially omitted Robert B. Parker's Spenser
series from this list of mystery winners. Consider that
rectified. Spenser is cool, cooks and is
faithful to his woman. He's also a man's man (that means
tough) who always gets his crook. I never watched
the TV series, Spenser for Hire, but if you liked it, you'll
love the books. Nancy PS The first book in the
series is The Godwulf Manuscript. Parker's other series include
Jesse Stone and Sunny Randall. I recommend them both.

(series) | I
first met Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
when I was in junior high - a friend and I devoured and discussed
because we were nerds and because Doyle's stories and novels of Victorian London were a total
departure from our American kid lives. The characters were
slightly bizarre, but entertaining and the adventures well plotted.
Obviously the whole world agreed since Holmes and Watson have
retained their popularity for over a century. After
all these years, I was pleased to meet the great detective and
his chronicler again in the new series by Lauren Steinhauer that
begins with Sherlock Holmes' Lost Adventure - The True Story of the Giant Rats of Sumatra. Watson
may have become a serial Lothario, but the books feel comfortable.
And that's a
better thing. Nancy "Awesome,
thanks again Nancy!"
Lauren Steinhauer and publicist Patty PS
The next volume in this particular new series, Sherlock
Holmes and the Hapsburg Tiara, was written by Alan Vanneman.
Apparently lots of people have been writing about Sherlock and
Watson while I wasn't looking. |
