The Mapper's Diary - Volume 7

Well, if you checked out my sample map from the last diary entry, you likely saw how ridiculously large the map turned out to be. After giving it some additional thought, I scrapped my original layout entirely. I gave it some thought yesterday and decided to simply make the allies have a frontal assault on the two buildings. Trying to give them the alternate paths just wouldn't work becuase of the size of the two central buildings. Giving them the paths around the buildings just ended up making the paths too long. So, I've rotated the buildings 180 degrees (because I find it easier to work if the allies are moving north to attack) and changed the layout. I didn't do any sketches this time because I had a fairly complete layout done in my head. I quickly threw up a map with the new layout done with large brushes to double check the scale and times. Here is a pic of the new layout:

New Layout

This layout feels much better when you run around in it, much less expansive than the last layout. Here is the map file.

Just a side note, ydnar released a new version of q3map2 last night, verion 2.3.22. This version adds some functionality to misc_models. With this new version you can rotate a model along any axis (this is wonderful!) and you can now lightmap your models instead of using vertex lighting. Get the new q3map here.

Did some more tweaking of the layout. Nothing drastic, just trimmed off a lot of the excess where the buildings were really big even though I plan on having them be empty. I also went ahead and added the allied spawn along with their flag and forward spawn. Normally, I don't place these things this early in the process but, I'm doing this map a bit different. I plan on really testing it thoroughly with clans to try and gear it towards tournament play. Because of that, I plan on testing it well before its done. In fact, Once I get the insides of the two buildings roughly layed out I'll probably be handing it off to a group for testing of gameplay and layout. Anyway, here is the current layout:

And here is the .map file. Oh yeah, I also adjusted my sky shader just a touch. Originally, the sun was at 220 degrees (see the q3map_sun command), but, since I rotated my map, I wanted it to be at a different angle so I changed it to 310.
